Excellent Expectations

Excellent Expectations is an intriguing Chinese hacking/detective game. The entire game operates on the phone of Rasty, a game developer. Throughout the investigation, players unrevealed a series of histories and secrets of all the major characters involved. The story itself is composed of fragments of conversations, pictures, and information. When piecing all the information together, the player uncovers a heartwarming or heartbreaking emotional story. The problem of the game is also obvious. Many game design decisions embody a sense of humour only known by groups of Chinese netizens. Without proper guidance, the reference to the events or the motivations of the characters can be really obscure to the player. Also, the emotional relationships between characters are currently very one-dimensional. There could be more character history being told through the chatting apps. Overall, it is a fun little game, at least for a sleepless Monday night. 6/10.
