Dredge is a relatively disappointing game, it rests on creative premises and interesting directions however, the game mechanics are too plain to carry out a supposed thrilling journey of discovery and madness. None of its particular mechanics are interesting enough to be called not a chore, and all the quests are easy fetch quests without much story significance. Overall, the game is very mid I can only give it a 5/10

This is a spiritual succession of the old TCG games without all the overwhelming grinds. The grind for cards is very well-paced, it keeps the thrill of opening boosters and the reasonable progression of the game. The game offers in general three types of strategies for players to construct, damage agro (kill opponent in 4-5 turns), control agro (control opponent's board and make them full), and control attrition (play for millor late game control). it is a good game in the single-player TCG genre. 8/10 great game with some merit.

This is one of the best and worst games I have played and for good reasons. Tunic is both very experimental and at the same time very traditional. The game design is very innovative and captures how video games used to be experienced. The old game was filled with obscure puzzles, unfair level design, and even a foreign language, which resembled the old Japanese game in which nobody understood what going on. Player has to scratch their heads to look for the game manual for hints and walkthroughs. In Tunic, the game manual is both a tool for hints and a puzzle to be solved. However, after so many years of gaming experience, I believe game designs are generally going in the correct direction, how the old game used to be experienced was a product of this time and would not completely click in modern times. Additionally, there are many game design choices I cannot possibly agree on, for instance, the maximum health-reducing enemy and even in the mid-game the game reset all player upgrades which basically ended the previous gameplay investment meaningless. The hidden puzzles are way to time-consuming than they needed to be, they are mostly not difficult to figure out but very time-consuming to map out the correct code. One single error can cost a player 30 minutes to 1 hour. Overall, it is a unique experience in the modern age, everyone should give it a try to see if they like it or not, especially I would those who have summer vacation to burn. 7/10 good game with serious flaws.

Excellent Expectations

Excellent Expectations is an intriguing Chinese hacking/detective game. The entire game operates on the phone of Rasty, a game developer. Throughout the investigation, players unrevealed a series of histories and secrets of all the major characters involved. The story itself is composed of fragments of conversations, pictures, and information. When piecing all the information together, the player uncovers a heartwarming or heartbreaking emotional story. The problem of the game is also obvious. Many game design decisions embody a sense of humour only known by groups of Chinese netizens. Without proper guidance, the reference to the events or the motivations of the characters can be really obscure to the player. Also, the emotional relationships between characters are currently very one-dimensional. There could be more character history being told through the chatting apps. Overall, it is a fun little game, at least for a sleepless Monday night. 6/10.

Storyteller is a creative logic puzzle game, with unique humour and mindful twists. The game requires players to arrange characters and scenarios to fit into a certain narrative. There are 60 normal stages and 10 twists at the end of the game, which can be finished within 2 hours. Many of those stages can be solved in several different ways allowing some degree of player self-expression. Quite a lot of stages also have references in classic literature, discovering them during the play through creates particular memorable experience. However, the game is too simple and too short. It has many good elements and ideas for creating complexity in narratives but ultimately failed in doing so. It throws out many good ideas without further explorations. Overall, I think it is a good game with some minor flaws, which is 7/10 by my standard.

Against the Storm

User ScoreGRRicky
Feb 21, 2024
Against the Storm merges city-building and resource management with roguelike elements in an unexpected yet brilliantly executed combination. At first glance, merging the steady progression of city builders with the punishing, progression-resetting nature of roguelikes might seem incompatible. However, the final product miraculously maintains the complexity of city-building alongside the thrilling unpredictability of roguelike games. The result feels akin to a real-time strategy (RTS) game's single-player campaign, albeit without the combat. --------|The gameplay loop of Against the Storm is both fun and challenging, offering a unique thrill of discovery and rewarding careful planning. Unlike traditional base-building games where progression feels relatively safe and linear, here, every step forward is fraught with risk. Having invested over 150 hours into the game, I find the gameplay loop has only recently begun to frustrate me, which makes it a big success by my standards. --------|The core gameplay revolves around two main elements: world progression and settlement management, interconnected through 'cycles.' A cycle represents players' time to navigate the map and prepare for the world storm. Establishing a settlement within a cycle requires the player to earn a certain number of victory points, which consumes a number of years, based on player decisions and luck, from the cycle. Upgrades from the citadel can streamline the settlement procession, enabling further exploration and seal mending. This cycle of settlement building, upgrading, and seal mending is the crux of the progression experience, enriched by a vast array of environmental factors, world events, structural modifiers, and storm hazards. The necessity to adapt your strategy due to the random distribution of blueprints and the wide range of difficulty options significantly enhances the game's replayability.--------|From a gameplay perspective, Against the Storm encourages players to explore, strategize, and refine their build orders to meet increasingly challenging scenarios. However, the game does start to slow down around the mid-game, particularly after 50-70 hours, as citadel upgrades begin to feel less impactful. --------|One feature I would love to see is the ability to save or reserve a favourite settlement. Many players are drawn to city-building but become captivated by the game's fast-paced challenges. Allowing players to maintain a 'main base' for late-game grinding would add depth and encourage continued engagement, even during the final grinds. It would also lend significance to decorative elements, making unlock decorations feel more meaningful. Thus, I believe having the option to retain one settlement would greatly enhance the replayability of the game. --------|Overall, it is a fantastic and addictive gaming experience. It is a great game with tiny flaws. 8/10

"Wedding Witch” is a game similar to Vampire Survivors. The game has suggestive themes but no explicit nudity. The story is straightforward and brief. One of the game's strengths is its engaging and fun core gameplay. There are three kinds of levelling systems in the game, offering diverse combinations. This variety allows players to experiment with different patterns and styles. On the downside, the game is somewhat oversimplified. It only offers three difficulty settings. Even at the highest difficulty, the game doesn't present challenges that justify grinding for meta-progression upgrades. Overall, Wedding Witch is a decent game and worth playing if you enjoy the genre.

Sea of Stars Sea of Stars is a beautifully animated JRPG with likable characters, mesmerizing music, and a touch of sorrow in a heart-warming story. However, the game suffers from pacing issues and questionable design choices that ruined the late-game experience. Thus, I would rate it a 6 out of 10, which means medium with notable merits. The characters in the game are well-designed. Not only do they visually stand out, but all characters have different backgrounds, secrets, motivations, and unique gimmicks in their power. Their commitment to duty and willingness to do good is what drives the story forward. The environments are well crafted. Each place is filled with unique puzzles and layouts that are exciting to explore. Traversal feels smooth and enjoyable thanks to tools like the grappling hook. The story of Sea of the Stars is told with a relatively slow and steady pacing. It is a dreamy journey set out in a world tormented by the force of evil that is unable to rival with by its inhabitants. However, unlike many modern games, people in this world are not twisted and distorted by despair. The people living in that world still found joy in life. The Heros and Villains of this game represent the traditional “good” and “evil” duality. They all hold tremendous power, faced difficult situations in life, but made completely different decisions. In the end, the story of Sea of Stars is a tale of kindness conquering evil. It is about seeking joy in the face of adversary instead of becoming a part of it. Once, we no longer fixated on the adversary in life, we are no longer bounded by our selfishness. Then when we “ascend” from our little world, and ride our free spirit reaches the metaphorical “sea of stars”. However, there are some aspects of the game really feels dated or even intentionally dragging what should have been finished, especially the combat and late game quest design. The combat in this game is turn based combat with quick time events. When attacking or defending, the player can press buttons at critical moments to perform follow-up attacks or blocks. Unfortunately, the game offers a very limited move set to each character, three skills plus one ultimate for each character. That means, during the 20-30 hours game play, the player is expected to do the same move, again and again and again and again. In some late game boss fight, the same skill can even be used ten times in the same fight. Hence, even the bosses in late game are very well designed and lost appeal due to this repetitiveness. The quest design is another big bomber. The game is filled with fetch quest after fetch quest after fetch quest. Even when the highlight of the story takes place, what’s after that? Another 10 hours of random fetch quests which completely killed the mood. What’s more baffling than that is the designer locked the true ending under a whole series of hustles including hours of backtracking and finding 60 collectables. These decisions completely ruined the late game experience, with mind numbing repetition and tedious objectives. In Conclusion, the Sea of Stars has really great foundation, but ends up as a frustrating experience due to some peculiar game design decisions. It has one of the most imaginative worlds but it is filled with the most boring quest design. Each enemy comes with its own gimmick but players can only combat it using the tool they have been using in the first few hours in the game. Overall, it amounts to a very mediocre experience with some sparkling highlights. 6/10 (medium with merit)

Wish: Israfil Saga

User ScoreGRRicky
Dec 22, 2023
Wish has a simple vision, a clear gameplay loop, and it works. It is a combination of a Match-3 game (for combat) and a visual novel Galgame (for story). The game features a diverse cast of eight female characters, each embodying a different identity trope: a maid, an elvish priest, an isekai girl, a vampire, a witch, one kemonomimi, a dragon girl and an empress. In the story, the characters tend to conform to their identity tropes, but the voice acting is superb and hard carries the characters. At times, the dialogue can be forced, but the background music is so emotional that makes the dialogue feel sincere. Each story arc provides a relatively unique motivation for the character to join the protagonist’s party. It serves as the emotional foundation of intimate relationships. There is nothing new or memorable in the story narrative, but the game is very short and fast-paced so it never feels too cliché. One big letdown is the English translation is so bad that one kind of needs to rewrite every sentence in their head in order to get the sentiment. The Match 3 gameplay offers the bare minimum of what players can expect. One will face each enemy 4 times in a row. Each enemy can perform a special move, which summons special blocks with negative effects. All special blocks are fair except damage immunity blocks in the later game. Everything leading up to the intimate relationships is not bad, but the sex part is done poorly. The sex scenes never feel rewarding or unique. The dialogue is pushed to the point that breaks the characters. The interactions with the female characters are very limited. In general, this part plays out like a chore.

Story wise, it is a good game with an intriguing take on the historical conflicts between cultures and a deeper struggle between honouring the tradition or control by it. The ghost is an image not created by one individual, it is an image people wants to see in a desperate time. However, when that image grow to big and out grow the honour and traditions binds the people living on the island, it is self becomes an invader of culture just like the mongols. The game play experience of this game is as representative as the majority of the open world RPG out there on the market. There are very little diversity in terms of enemy design. Every mini boss is basically the same as the last one. The player can basically experience game play wise everything in the fist few hour of play. Overall the story and the visually stunning cinematography is the main drive pushes me wants to finish this game. The game play relatively tedious and not rewarding.

I would not say this is better than bloodborne, which is still my favourite PS4game, but I can see why some may think this is the best FromSoft game. The core premise of this game is you, as the player, become better and better. Remember the chilling moment you had when defeating a difficult boss? The rewarding moment in sekiro comes much later; it comes in new game plus. In the multiple playthroughs, you as a player can fully experience how much better you become compares to the first playthrough and how fair (or in fair) the bosses are. For me, that many bosses like the guardian ape and sword saint are so fairly designed that once you really learnt them, you will never struggle against them again. And this feeling of power is so different from other souls games where players over levelling their character or using some insane built, which can sometimes create a sense of emptiness by providing a fake feeling of accomplishment.

Overall, except few well-thought-out plot twists in the middle of the game, the designer wants the game to convey too much, but too few design choices actually work. All four endings are terribly written and rendered all the development in the middle of the game meaningless. The following is the original review, which stands for my thoughts just after finishing the game: Generally pointless and the viewpoint is so bad that it causes motion sickness. However, there were one or two stories mildly interesting. In the end, the stories make them a family and the same stories kill them. Forever reason, the way stories reach their conclusions is always forced, so in that sense, it is not recommended to whoever wishes for a coherent story, but the general narrative is alright.

I'm not a GTA fan but I have still played all GTA games except GTA IV in the last 20 years since I am a gamer and GTA is a gaming phenomenon more than a game. However, I feel R* have made a wrong direction for GTA. Many years ago, for Vice City or San Andreas, all gameplay elements were fun. The shooting experience, the driving experience the characters and the stories are all very superb. However, what I experience in GTA V is an inferior shooting experience, mediocre characters and boring plots. Even the driving experience ****. In the process of GTA offers more and more options to players, the video game industry has changed a lot too. All genre are showing their incredible evolutions. GTA cannot be the game which just offers the options regardless the quality of the options anymore. Overall, it is still a good option for many budget players since it is like a bundle of games, but for players have a huge library, this game basically offers absolutely nothing. p. S One may think it is unfair to compare one single game to a game library. However, it is what happens when the game offers a variety of options, and none of them is particularly good. For normal gamers, they are going after a particular experience, so a game has to be decent in something. For instance, if a player what to enjoy some great characters and plot, he would go for Witcher 3; this game has an inferior combat system, but combat is not the reason you play this game, you play it for the characters and plot. The players who want to have a great combat system would go for Dark Souls or the God of War. For the same token, the gamers who want a great shooting experience or driving experience can always found a better choice in their library. That is why a vast library can overshadow GTA V but cannot overshadow most games since most games have something unique to offer while GTA V is a budget bundle of games of its time, which I think might be a wrong vision for future GTA. But so far, it sells great, maybe it is the right vision but not for gamers like me.

However, the open world element some time can be tedious, especially some locations which players will infiltrate numerate times through the entire game.
