Dungeon’s Hinterberg takes dungeon crawling, makes it a capitalist venture, and results in a personal story about the benefits and downfalls of tourism in our small towns. It’s a heartfelt story that charms you straight off the bat. The dungeons themselves are fun and feel more like a sightseeing holiday than terribly complex combat-fueled ventures, but if you’re looking for a chill time with hacking and slashing and hanging out with friends whilst saving the town from magic, then Dungeons of Hinterberg is a perfect holiday.

The heroine of this fantasy video game is not a legendary warrior forged in the fire of a thousand battles, but a young adult facing an existential crisis, dressed casually and wielding a sword made in China. The setting is not a mythical land, but an ordinary vacation spot. Dungeons of Hinterberg blends magic and everyday life in a mix that offers some good ideas, though not fully realized. Behind this facade lies an action/adventure game that aims to entertain with varied gameplay—and it succeeds, as long as you don’t expect too much.

Dungeons of Hinterberg is a very well-designed dungeon crawler that combines gameplay mechanics known from Zelda with social aspects of Persona. Despite the limited development budget, it gave me a ton of fun thanks to its designers’ ingenuity and creative approach to the implemented systems.

Do not judge a book by its cover. We are taught that at a young age, right? But we do. We are human. So when the trailers for Dungeons of Hinterberg dropped, I was not impressed. I was interested in the idea of a mix between Zelda-style dungeons and Persona-style social links, but the art style and character design really turned me off. So much so that I was pretty sure there was no way I would play this one, ever. Then Humble Bundle included it in a monthly batch, and I tried it. I quickly realized how silly I was for ignoring it.Sure, the character design never got much better in my eyes. Everyone looks like they have been a pro boxer for years, and their noses took the brunt of the damage. But the art style absolutely did improve for me, and it really grew on me. The “hatching” effect over everything gives it a modern yet retro feel that I have not seen done elsewhere. It is pretty, full of bright colors, and each of the four zones and their respective dungeons has charm.Dungeons, for me, are where the game shined the most. Each has a theme matching the specific magic you obtain in that zone. Nearly every one of the 25 total dungeons had something that tripped me up, but nothing overly challenging that required looking up the puzzle answers. I loved those “ah ha!” moments. There are clever uses of different camera types, such as a few isometric dungeons or a few side-scrolling ones. The bosses were great too; I just wish there were more. Enemy design beyond bosses was only okay—not enough variety, and not much fun to fight.I think the social link side of the game was its weaker aspect, as this is where the devs lost balance in the content. You will easily clear all the dungeons well before you max even a third of your social links. You have to actively grind more relationships if you want to, which I think is odd—especially because the combat and dungeons were not hard enough to warrant replaying. Most players will likely end up in the same situation. Some social links were great, some were okay, and some were boring. Without the big narrative focus of Persona or Metaphor, it is harder to feel connected to the side **** overall narrative was good, and it did inspire some thoughts. I love the idea of the main character trying to truly disconnect from reality, to go on a real vacation and not worry. There is a part where they mention how nice it is just to sit outside for an afternoon, and how in their normal life they feel like they always have to be doing tangible things and making progress to feel fulfilled. I relate to this a lot, and it inspired me to find ways to relax more often and just be in the moment.Overall, a good game—held back from being great by the tried and true saying: less really is more.

It's a cute, snacky game.. but I couldn't help but feel a bit bored. All the mechanics are okay, but it just lacks challenge and complexity to make it interesting. I imagine it's at the right level for a very casual gamer, but overall: simple puzzles, simple combat, simple story, simple character growth and inventory management. It's nice to have an European feel though.

Original story and theme with captivating start but it becomes a bit repetitive with more puzzles and less action/RPG elements.

A breath of fresh air and a genuine contender for one of 2024’s best games yet, Dungeons of Hinterberg is a no-brainer pickup - whether you’re subscribed to Game Pass or not.

Despite a few technical shortcoming, due to its indie nature, Dungeons of Hinterberg is a great adventure game, with clever puzzles and a unique theme. It replaces ski-resort tourism with exploring-dungeons-full-of-goblins tourism. It simple works, offering a relaxing experience with highly enjoyable gameplay and beautiful cel-shaded environments.

very fun, sweet, and entertaining game, love the different ideas and gameplay the various dungeons offer, and as an austrian myself, i laughed my *** off at some of the very authentic cultural references in the game. Genuinely had a blast playing it

Playing Dungeons of Hinterberg is a fun experience and a nice break from games with darker themes. The artwork, too, adds levity to the feeling of the game. Luisa is a relatable character, too. She went into a career and lived the way she thought was right, but it led to her realizing that she doesn’t actually enjoy how her life turned out, and she decides that slaying monsters is the break she needs to fight off her burnout. All-in-all, I think this is a game worth trying if you enjoy a mix of dungeon diving, action, and social simulation.

A few small issues and some bugs aside, Dungeons of Hinterberg is a solid action-RPG. At its core though is some fantastic, sharp writing that asks interesting questions of its player and protagonist, all wrapped up in a cozy setting. Here's my review of Dungeons of Hinterberg.

There’s a lot to enjoy in Dungeons of Hinterberg. The premise is original and the combat ticks all the expected ARPG elements. Like in real life, I’m not fond of forced social interaction, and sometimes the game is a bit more gated than it appears. The puzzles are satisfying, and while movement and spell-casting can be janky, there’s quite a bit of content to explore. Fans of family-friendly ARPGs and the blend of magic and everyday life should definitely plan a staycation in Hinterberg.

Dungeons of Hinterberg is more like those all-inclusive package tours that blend together in a mind-collage of cocktails by the pool and the dine of the breakfast buffet: pleasant enough to pass the time but too safe to leave a lasting mark. [Issue#401, p.112]

Pros: enjoyable visual, most of the dungeons had good balance of solving puzzles and combat Cons: jumping mechanism is designed poorly

A great premise that is chock full of heart and charm, has a great relaxed feel and setting. The characters are unique and fun to interact with. The dungeons have a great 3D Zelda like feel that eventually become a little tedious as the mechanics aren't deep enough to support their quantity and length.
Because of how gear focused the upgrade path is the game was in desperate need of different visuals for the armor sets and weapons as you progress, you wear the same outfit/weapons visually from start to finish.
The story is solid, if predictable, but the real power here is in the setting and characters.

constantly freezes and it's boring too. mostly puzzles and climbing. this is basically every dungeon: you enter an area monsters appear you kill them usually just button mash maybe dodge now and than and move on, solve puzzles and climb than fight a boss at the end. all the dungeons are linear and boring.

SummaryDungeons of Hinterberg is an action-adventure RPG that includes monster fighting, puzzle solving, magic wielding, and relationship building, all set around the cozy Alpine village of Hinterberg!
