RPG Fan
Longtime series purists may scoff at this release as a lackluster treatment of a genre classic and stick to the fan translation of the Super Famicom original. As a longtime series fan that’s played many hours of the original, I can relate to that perspective. However, I think that even in its slightly compromised state, an officially localized version of Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon on modern platforms is worth playing despite minor downgrades, especially since it massively expands the potential reach of this title beyond the admittedly niche community of retro fan translation enthusiasts. Not a triumphant return, but an appreciated revisit to Torneko’s first outing nonetheless.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon - Classic HD is a valuable historical document for RPG fans, finally bringing the 1993 roguelike to the West. It retains the charm of Dragon Quest, Torneko's appeal, and the tension of early dungeon crawlers. However, as a modern entertainment product, it suffers from dated mechanics, slow menu transitions, and interface hiccups that hinder fluidity. While it offers quality-of-life improvements and an HD-2D aesthetic, the visual treatment feels inconsistent. Despite its historical significance, the game's pacing issues and reliance on luck make it a challenging and often frustrating experience for contemporary players.

Nintendo Insider
If you think the weird bits of lag and patchy visuals won’t be a problem for you, then I think Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is a strong Mystery Dungeon experience. It’s pretty cool to finally have the game that got this whole ball rolling available officially in English, and it does more than you might expect given its pioneering status. Plus, how can you not love Torneko? He might be one of the most relatable RPG heroes around. There are some hiccups here, but Torneko’s quest to seek financial stability for his family with little more than sheer determination and a packed lunch is aspirational in a way that killing a thousand Dragonlords could never be.

While I'm absolutely thrilled we have the first Torneko's Mystery Dungeon in English after all these years, I'm mostly just hopeful this will lead to other, better Dragon Quest titles being released on modern consoles. Spin-offs like Rocket Slime certainly deserve it, and so do some of the older Dragon Quest Monsters games. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of even more long-lost Dragon Quest releases in the West.

Very much a product of its time, with several aspects that could have been improved for a release coming 33 years after the original, Torneko’s story remains solid and enjoyable. While it may be too difficult for players who are not used to the genre, the game clearly shows its age in almost every aspect. Visually, it improves upon and standardizes the style we’ve seen throughout the Dragon Quest series in recent years, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the formula.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon Classic HD preserves an important piece of roguelike history with a punishing but rewarding dungeon-crawling loop and charming progression. Unfortunately, this barebones release does little to modernize the experience, with sluggish text, unclear mechanics, limited accessibility, and almost no meaningful quality-of-life improvements making an already difficult game even harder to recommend to newcomers.

But Why Tho?
Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- feels old and gets stale quickly.
