As is very common in video games, what the press hailed as one of "The Best Games of the Year!!1" was forgotten a few months after its release. No, Divine Divinity is far from one of the best the ARPG genre has to offer. The good news? If you can stomach its flaws, you’ll receive a 70+ hour, immersive and occasionally funny experience. An old-school classic, though? Nope.

Above all, it's plain fun to play, to develop your character and find ever-better weapons and armor, to face the foe around the next corner.

There is definitely too much of a good thing here—by the time I was ready to put this game behind me and move on to something else, I still had to spend another full day playing just to reach the "real" end.

It has the same concept as Divinity Original Sin. You're dealing with orcs and a plague in a town, but the gameplay is difficult. Honestly, it's very unclear what you're supposed to do. The game doesn't even have a tutorial to learn the gameplay. You start the game after choosing the character without even a direct cinematic. The story was clichéd in the later games, but at least the main characters had motivations.

A very detailed role-playing game with many game situations and in-depth mechanics. Everything would be fine if it wasn't so monotonous gameplay, for that matter. 7/10

If Larian Studios could have maintained that difficulty throughout the entire game, then Divine Divinity really could have been something, and perhaps reviewers like me wouldn’t call games "hybrids of Diablo and Baldur’s Gate," but instead call them "games like Divine Divinity."

The level of player interaction and attention to detail rivals that of "Morrowind" and easily surpasses the "Baldur's Gate" series.

There's a comfortable familiarity to its medieval setting, and the story is refreshingly non-linear - if you want it to be. [Dec 2002, p.148]

Despite its many faults, it remains a solid contribution to its genre, with graphics and music that form a particularly credible environment. That the arrival of its hasty conclusion is so regrettable is only a testament to its many strengths.

Hands down the best ARPG i've ever played. A truly amazing and immersive world makes Divine Divinity more in league with all-time crpg classics like Ultima than its ARPG brethren. Total customization in every department and a design ethos typical from the eastern european scene, a solid ten out of ten.

5 years ago I played it for 30 hours. Coming back to my save I find there are a lot of more accessible games out there, even ones almost as ancient like Sacred for instance. Doesn't make the cut anymore.

My analysis is taking into account the year I played (2022). Playing this game was very complicated, I wanted to visit the whole divinity saga and I was very negatively surprised by this game. The graphics are terrible and even for the time I dare say they were weak. It's a bad graphic that bothers you, it's hard to find some quest items because anything is in front, or a wall. Also the game is very unbalanced between classes, I played the beginning with mage but I realized that the spells would be very weak, and warrior, I can't imagine the terror that was with ranger. The variety of items is almost nil, and without much feeling of evolution from them. I did the dragon armor quest to find that it was weaker than most parts I already had from normal drops. Playing as a warrior is pure boredom due to the absence of skills designed and tested to see if they would be useful. In addition, there is still a clear progression imbalance, the game is very difficult at the beginning and easy at the end, even on hard. The story that could help is very weak. For those who want to know the whole saga, I recommend a summary of the story on the internet.

I went into this game hoping for a fun experience like I had with DIablo and Torchlight and I came away disappointed. I couldn't even get through the first dungeon. First of the UI is less than intuitive. I kept having to hunt around for my equipment for my equipment screen. If there was a keyboard shortcut for it it wasn't obvious. Also the leavers and such in the dungeon were hard to see because they blended into the walls. When asked to find three pentagrams on the floor I spent over half an hour searching for them because they blended into the floor. It also would've been nice if they highlighted when I moused over them, but they didn't. Also a quick select bar would've been nice, it sure would've saved me from dieing against that first boss. Which brings me to the final straw that killed the game for me. When the afor mentioned boss killed me I kinda expected some sort of Game Over screen to come up or a prompt asking me to retry or reload my last save or something, but nothing of the sort came up. Instead the game just sat there with the Boss dancing around my corpse. I don't care if this is a smaller developer, this is not performance. I expected better esp. considering all the rave reviews this game got.
