Devolver Bootleg

Devolver Bootleg is a joke, but a well made joke.

While the games themselves are functional and worth a chuckle, the best experience relies on the player being familiar with the source material.

This is an exceptionally hard game to review and score. You almost have to compare it to the originals, as they’re direct, stated ripoffs. It’s obvious though that this was a piece of satire in video game form aimed at, seemingly, themselves. In that sense, it achieves what it set out to as a game and should serve as a welcome piece of obscure entertainment to fans of Devolver’s games.

Devolver Bootleg is an interesting collection of smaller knockoff titles of their official library. While the overall content is a bit on the shallow side, fans of Devolver Digital will get a kick out of this, if only for a short moment.

Ask yourself this: Do you really need more empty irony in your life? Do any of us? We of course do because it’s a wonderfully effective way of numbing ourselves against the self-created horror that is the reality of living on borrowed time due to various catastrophic extinction scenarios of our own making. But hey, maybe a nice bit of sincerity might ease that along, too.
