Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster stands is a prime example of how to do remasters right. It doesn't cut or alter hastily. What Capcom has added, and what it has improved, only enhances the original experience. For Dead Rising fans, this is like a re-opening of your favourite childhood fast food spot, a brand-new un-torn version of your favourite t-shirt, or returning to a beloved holiday destination and finding all the places you've missed are still there and with a fresh coat of paint.

The original Dead Rising shows its age these days but it’s still a fantastic experience for those who can adapt to it. Deluxe Remaster addresses this, adding a whole host of small additions, quality of life improvements and a beautiful graphical overhaul that keeps the core of the game intact. As much as I did miss the original voice cast, Deluxe Remaster cements itself as the way to play Dead Rising.

Dead Rising was a masterpiece in 2006 and even more so in 2024. Capcom has overhauled the game in every part, bringing it back to life in a double guise, able to please lovers of the edgy, original chapter but also those who want a more current and ‘comfortable’ experience. In both cases, you will be faced with one of the craziest and most entertaining trash-horror games ever.

Like Romero's best movies, Dead Rising uses its zombies to tell a compelling story about society (in this case, American society) at large, and this is filtered through the outside perspective of the game's original developers and writers. If you've never played it, or if your only experience with the franchise relates to the other titles, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is the best place to start.

All up, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster felt like going home for this veteran player. And with a retail price of only $70 AUD, it's all the better.

More than anything, it’s a joy to see a game that means so much to me have the time and love it deserves poured into it by developers who clearly care about it just as much as I do. There was a chance that Dead Rising was going to be stuck in a grave forever, but Deluxe Remaster proves that the dead can, and should, rise again.

For those that didn’t experience Dead Rising back in the day, you are in for a treat. While not much has changed on the surface, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster goes so far beyond just giving the game a fresh lick of paint, tightening up gameplay, reimagining parts of the world, but still making for a damn fine and fun game to play. Go get ‘em Frank, your time is not done!

If you want something that updates the game significantly you’ll be disappointed in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster - but if you want to revisit the original, this is the definitive way to do so.
