Chaos on Deponia

"Chaos on Deponia" is the second point-and-click game in Deponia series. It features a goofy protagonist, Rufus. He still lives on a garbage filled planet Deponia, from which he always plans to escape. Rufus is a walking disaster. You can expect water to catch fire when Rufus is around. There is something about smart mouthed Rufus that reminds us of Guybrush Threepwood, classic point-and-click hero. PROS: - Pretty and colorful cartoon graphics. - Humour: edgy, sarcastic, sometimes dark. - Good voice acting. - Decent story: with love, deception, mystery and revolution. - Balanced difficulty. - Cool locations. - Interesting characters (Bozo, Toni, Goal, The Revolutionists). - Classic point-and-click feel. MEH: - You get to visit some locations quite often, which makes background music somewhat annoying. - Some animations are sort of lazy. But that's to be expected from an Indie game with limited budget. CONS: - Some puzzles are not so intuitive, you may require walkthrough (I had to use it about 4 times). If you enjoy classic adventure games, "Chaos on Deponia" is just for you. It's not a masterpiece, but is good and you won't regret spending 10 hours to complete it. Anime style story-driven tactical RPG about courageous Squad 7 of militia fighting a hostile nation that invaded beautiful and peaceful country of Galia. PROS: - Beautiful comic book style graphics. - The game uses fictional countries and nations, but definitely has a WW2 feel. If you like WW2 themes (I do), the game is great. - Fine character development and touching story. - Good voice acting. - Good music. - Lots of tactical options. Every unit serves its purpose. Multiple options to win every battle. - Some levels are challenging, but as a person that sometimes has to refer to tutorials and FAQs, I was able to complete all by myself. MEH: - AI moves might be better. There are times when enemy is able to ruin you, but instead of destroying one tank, delivers equal number of attacks on both your tanks. So you have a feeling that AI goes easy on you. There is no difficulty setting. - Japanese dev had to squeeze a cute winged piglet there. It serves no purpose at all. - There are times where it is sort of naive, but it's still good. CONS: - Controls are sort of clunky, definitely prepared for gamepad, not a mouse. - Your tanks get stuck. - Some parts are unskippable, which may be painful, because sometimes you know you royally screwed up after enemy's first move and you'll need to reload from save for sure, but surprise surprise, you have to wait for enemy's all moves to do anything (it can take 2-5 minutes). As you can see, important stuff in the game is really good. There are some nuisance bugs and glitches, but it's all within norms. I recommend Valkyria Chronicles wholeheartedly. Small dungeon crawler with roguelike elements. You play as a small child Isaac in nightmarish semi-random basement levels fighting some really disturbing monsters. You can develop Isaac's speed, health and damage by finding various power-ups (there is A LOT of these). Beware, the game is difficult, but very addictive. A full playthrough takes about 30-45 minutes, but usually you get killed before you reach the final level. It took me almost 10 hours to complete the game for the first time. Side note: game features child abuse and a lot of disturbing gore/violence including blood, intestines, urine, feces. But to sum up, it's really worth playing (especially at sale prices below $0.99). It's addictive, has a spooky atmosphere and completing the game is rewarding. GRAPHICS: 8/10 AUDIO: 8/10 GAMEPLAY: 7/10 STORY: 8/10

Are you a fan of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale? Then this game is a must play. It's a classic Bioware RPG. Obviously, it's not Medieval style, but set in space and instead of magic you get the Force. PROS: - good, compelling plot - your "band of misfits" and team progression - variety of worlds to explore - "detective" quests - character development - background and enhancement of Star Wars lore - old school gameplay mechanics with pausable combat - lightsabers - graphics is oldish nowadays, but it's still cool MEH: - I believe the soundtrack doesn't try hard enough, it could be better, with more obvious themes for different planets - shopping is kind of optional, you can get by with items found on dead bodies and looted from chests CONS: - pazaak gambling gets boring, Witcher made gambling much more interesting - some bugs, for example your companions frequently block your way or start the fight when you intend to just sneak by Before playing KOTOR I wasn't a huge fan of Star Wars lore. Now I begin to like it all! The game gives you a lot of background and information on specific races, planets, history of the galaxy. It's definitely one of the best RPGs I've ever played! Prepare for 40 hours of awesome story! GAMEPLAY 9/10 GRAPHICS 8/10 AUDIO 7/10 STORY 10/10

Half-Life: Opposing Force

Half-Life: Opposing Force is an expansion for the original Half-Life. This time you are Corporal Shepard, a soldier tasked with hunting down Gordon Freeman while fending of aliens at the same time. It soon turns out that in general chaos everyone fights everyone, including new alien species and black ops soldiers. There are a few new weapons (alien lightning gun, Desert Eagle) and some new features. You get to lead other soldiers with various specialties: engineer who can cut doors, medic who can heal you. You learn to climb ropes and at one point you can use alien technology of grappling gun. Graphics is not great, but it's cool enough and the level design with brilliant color schemes and lighting styles makes up for it. Music sets the mood nicely, especially dynamic themes when something serious is going down. It's 2015 and I definitely enjoyed playing Half-Life: Opposing Force! Steampunk style point-and-click with really nice graphics (just remember it was made in 2002) and fantastic voice acting (one of best I've ever heard in an adventure game). Village mysteries, steampunk factories, amazing airships and intricate automatons - all this explored by young New York lawyer, Kate Walker. "Syberia" has some shortcomings, namely some annoying unskippable animations (like stair or ladder climbing) and it is quite linear, but the story is so great I would definitely recommend it anyway! "The Detail" is a visual comic book style interactive novel set in noir atmosphere of an American city. You solve a crime playing as an aging old-school bald detective and an ex-gangster. Don't let other reviews convince you that it's a point-and-click game! It's an interactive story with some choices. But mostly it's just click, click, click. That's why I don't recommend the game. The graphics style is quite good (only the "perspective" style faces in dialogue box are sort of "wrong"), there is no audio, no voice acting, only some music (it's OK). The story is... well, nothing special. Not bad, but not good either. The whole game took about 90 minutes of my time, but I believe you can finish it in 45-60 minutes. Unless you get it in some sort of game bundle, it's not worth the money.

PROS: - Geralt's character development (with quite original method of talents) - potion making (includes picking of herbs, harvesting jaws of vampires etc.) - moral choices reflecting in changing attitudes of other characters - multitude of quests - some parts are really intense - deep, immersive story - nice music, beautiful landscapes, amazing architecture - seducing women is kind of fun - becoming master of dice poker and fist fighting is also kind of fun - original monsters MEH: - somewhere midgame you get a lot of bothersome "run here, talk, run there, talk" quests - you need to adjust to game's combat system - first 30-90 minutes of the game are kind of boring CONS: - you don't get to use many weapons or armors, because other weapons than swords are not usable in witcher battle styles making them ineffective especially later in the game - after you start feeling which skills are important and focus on developing them, fighting becomes quite easy Overall: you need to bite the bullet and endure the first hour of the game. After that you get a really good, immersive RPG with damn good story and lots of locations.

My favorite platform game! Challenging, but satisfying gameplay. Variety of enemies, enormous choice of power-ups, semi-random levels in various environments and beautiful music! The game has many unlocks, interesting achievements and 10 playable characters, each demanding different tactics. Massive replay value! I haven't played many platform games, but Risk of Rain easily became my favorite!

Really worthwhile classic tycoon economy simulation game with a lot of achievements, cute retro graphics, not too easy, but not too difficult. Your call center may be developing slowly in the beginning, but things quickly go hectic and full of difficult managerial decisions. It's not a very complicated game, so expect to spend 10-20 hours playing it.

I just finished this Welsh point-and-click adventure game. You find yourself in a desolate farmhouse in Wales and get to investigate strange ghost-demon related activity there. Let's begin with the fact that it was fun at some times and some of the puzzles were enjoyable. Some moments of the story, too. On the other hand, many of the puzzles were very typical (find a light bulb to enter an unlit room etc.), some of the puzzles were randomly stupid. Many of the parts of the storyline are boring and they feel really random and illogical. The game was made in 2008, but it feels like 1997. Graphics is OK at times, but most of the time it feels like a high school project, same goes with animation (but there isn't much of that). Music is almost non existant and when it's there, it feels like MIDI made by a single person over a weekend... Rhiannon was made by a three person development team with Wintermute - freeware amateur software for creating point-and-click games. I got it in a game bundle, but I wouldn't recommend paying more than $1 for this game. Also, there are bugs. Sometimes inventory items disappear. Sometimes menu buttons (MAP) disappear. If you save afterwards, you'll never get them back. It is a known and never corrected issue. To sum up: if you ever played a point-and-click adventure game, you probably won't enjoy Rhiannon. If you haven't, you may enjoy it. I wouldn't recommend it though. GRAPHICS: 4/10 AUDIO: 3/10 GAMEPLAY: 3/10 STORY: 2/10

I bought this arcade skateboarding game as part of HumbleBundle. Your objective is skating as far as you can along short, but somewhat demanding levels featuring stairs, grinds, vehicles, obstacles. Along the level you get scores for tricks, grinds and combos. With 8 key controls the game seems to be easy, but it is relatively unforgiving, which makes you wanna beat it. I mean, how many times can you smash your face into the floor just after landing an epic 20x combo?! After a few minutes you can play the game and after 1-2 hours you get to know more tricks and are able to get quite impressive scores. The game features classic 8-bit arcade graphics style and urban music floating between trance, hip-hop and dubstep (no vocals). Is it fun? Yes it is. You want to win the level. You want to land the combo. You want to beat your friends' score online (there are leaderboards). The graphics is retro-cool (but at times too simplistic and repetitive) and the music creates right skateboarding mood. At the same time it is a little annoying, especially after multiple failures. Despite easy controls I tend to mix up the keys in the heat of the moment. Music is good, but it just runs in the background, isn't related to levels or your activity/performance. Some levels are repetive, but the in-game achievements vary from level to level. There are multiple themes including city, port and junkyard. Some are better than others, for example in port the lack of detail on the floor makes it difficult to estimate your current speed. There are some bugs. The game crashed for me once. It is a nice little game definitely worth getting in some bundle. Depending on how much you like arcade games you will have 5-20 hours of fun until it gets a little boring. It is not a bad game. It is just dull. Like many budget tycoon games, Cruise Ship Tycoon is quite easy. You build stuff, earn money, build more stuff... and it gets a little boring after 1-2 hours. There are no surprises, game is quite straightforward and it is difficult to lose. Too easy, too boring.

I finished a lot of FPS games. I enjoy World War II games. I played a few instances of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. The graphics is OK, the sound is OK. The game itself is not typical. It focuses on tactics and leading a team of men, giving them orders. It's very difficult to finish without managing the other soldiers. This gets complicated at some moments. Some of the maps are a little dull (too much fields, too little buildings and towns) and when you can't finish a dull level just because your teammate gets lost between bushes and can't follow you it gets a bit annoying.

Classic LucasArts point-and-click adventure. You play as one of astronauts sent to a mysterious asteroid traveling towards Earth. As it turns out, not everything is as it seems and the space journey will lead you to visit multiple fantastic sci-fi places and solve fascinating mysteries. The story is really engrossing! Retro cartoon graphics can be really enjoyable. Atmospheric soundtrack by Michael Land is fabulous. One of my favorite adventure games!

I finally played and finished this great cyberpunk themed FPS-RPG-stealth hybrid genre classic. You are JC Denton, international United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) peace force agent fighting NFS terrorist organization in dystopian 2052 New York. New, unknown virus ("the grey death"), widespread zyme drug addiction, police curfew are the reality. You aren't just a regular person, you are nano-augmented. This means you have bionic upgrades giving you almost superhuman capabilities in some fields. The game has some first person shooter qualities. There are multiple types of firearms including pistols, shotguns, sniper and assault rifles, experimental plasma guns, tranquilizer darts and various melee weapons including swords, batons, crowbars and knives. You can also use various grenades and explosives. But here come the RPG qualities: you are initially inexperienced with all of these weapons and as the game progresses you need to choose skills to upgrade. How about some stealth? You don't have to upgrade your fighting skills. You can upgrade swimming, lockpicking and hacking. Deus Ex is not-so-linear and usually you have more than one way to finish a level. Fighting is one option, but usually you can also crawl into ventilation ducts, climb some ladders, jump some containers and find yourself on the other side without having killed a single person (or bot). Along with upgrading your skills, you choose and upgrade your bionic augmentations. Your game tactics will depend on implants you choose. There are 18 types of implants, but you only have 9 slots. You get to decide whether you prefer to install Speed Enhancement or Run Silent implant. Will you need Ballistic Protection (reduced bullet damage) or EMP Shield (protection from electrocution which is used by some bots)? To use your augmentations you need to use bioelectrical energy and you need to plan carefully, because it has limits. JC Denton will discover conspiracy, traitors, surprising allies in many locations, all of them with neo-noir feel. New York City, Hong Kong (think Blade Runner), Paris, Area 51, ships, hotels, underwater labs. The plot is really long, has many surprise twists and gives you multiple choices, including three quite different endings. Music is quite cool and fits the atmosphere of the locations. Graphics... well, the game was released in 2000, so it's a little disappointing as of 2014, but if you can get over average graphics, Deus Ex is amazingly immersing.

A very nice blend of RTS, RPG and economic game. You are the ruler of Ardania, Fantasy Kingdom. You construct the guilds, economic buildings, research better weapons and shields. But you cannot control your heroes directly. They are controlled by setting rewards for specific goals like exploring a territory or killing a monster. There is a variety of missions and quests, some of which require attacking specific places or killing a monster which requires certain strategy. Others require simultaneous construction of some temples or defending a merchant caravan. "Majesty 2" has nice, colorful 3D fantasy graphics and music which sets the mood really nice (with some beautifully epic pieces for final monster fights). There is a huge choice of hero classes like warriors, wizards, rogues, clerics, paladins and nice selection of monsters with their dwellings including vampire crypts, elemental portals and wolf dens. The game has a unique style merging some qualities of "Heroes of Might and Magic", some of "Age of Empires" and others from RPG games. Many missions are really demanding. I needed to consult strategy guides to finish some of the levels, but even after reading a strategy guide you can find your unique tactics to defeating the boss. After 25 hours of playing I have finished this really enjoyable game.
