The Loft10

Everyone seems to hate this movie and I can kind of understand why but to me this was a cool, sexy, twisty and entertaining thriller. I do actually genuinely like this movie. The plot follows five married guys who invest in a loft so they can take their mistresses their and then one day they walk in and find a dead body and they must find out who did it. now none of these characters are necessarily likable but the performances behind them are pretty good. Karl Urban is great as per-usual, James Marsden is a stand out and gives the best performance in the entire movie, Matthias Schoenaerts is also very good reprising his role from the Belgium film, Eric Stonestreet is serviceable to his role but not really all that good and Wentworth Miller is just plain awful and awkward in his role. Rachel Taylor is quite surprisingly good as one of the mistresses and Isabel Lucas is really hot (she sheds a lot of skin and it is kind of awesome) and has definitely improved on her acting skills. While the film is very confusing and takes a little too many twists here and there, I did enjoy the unraveling and the motives, it kept me guessing until the end. My biggest issue with the movie is its ending it just felt a little too nice for how dark and serious the movie is. In the end I found this to be a very entertaining movie that I would go back and watch again because of its ensemble and its fun plot. I know it has a 0% on rotten tomatoes and everyone seems to be hating it but I really like and I give "The Loft" an A-. It is now in my list of guilty movie pleasures and underappreciated movies. I went into this with 0 expectations and a fear of this being just another run of the mill generic Descent rip off with found footage. The director of this however directed my favorite found footage film of all time which is "The Poughkeepsie Tapes". I walked out actually having enjoyed and I was also a little shaken up. This movie starts out really slow and really not all that interesting but once the crew of characters enter the catacombs this movie really picked up. It had some genuinely creep scares as well as some very unsettling sounds and imagery. This is another rare case of good acting in horror movie. This movie had all the way up until the end. The end was a cheap anti-climactic abrupt end with nothing even remotely explaining what the hell we just watched. No Clues! Nothing! Even Under the Skin (one of my favorites of this year) a nearly silent film left subtle visual hints at what was going on. This has nothing! Slow beginning, bad end but great middle with some seriously chilling scares and an outstanding visit visit from an old friend (The Grim Reaper). If you are a die hard fan of Horror movies you will most likely enjoy this. Score: 7.2 out of 10 Legendary Pictures, 89 min. Rated R

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For10

I great follow up to a perfect comic book movie adaption. "Sin City" is one of my favorite movies of all time because it recaptured the comics that I love so very much. I have read all 8 volumes of Sin City and this was like opening up a whole new book because about 60% of the movie is new material. The only adapted storyline is "A Dame to Kill For" and it followed its source material swimmingly. This has a master class if actors, the standouts are JGL, Eva Green, Mickey Rourke and Powers Booth. Jessica Alba is at her best which is still only okay. Josh Brolin kicks ass as per usual. People complain about the continuity and that this movie is to over the top and gratuitous in every fashion but the fact is is that this is a comic book movie that embraces what it is and takes its Neo-Noir storytelling all the way. Its fun, its bloody, its sexy and its soooooo bad-ass. If liked the comics and the first film you'll love this. Also The Hateful Eight teaser was beautiful. Score: 10 out of 10 Dimension Films, 102 min. Rated R

I was and still am a big fan of the 1993 Lois Lowry, it was a spectacular book that had a so-so cliffhanger ending that didn't answer any questions that the reader was left with. I will start my review at the ending because it goes beyond what the book did and gives the audience hope for the future of these characters and I liked that. People are complaining that questions are still left unanswered, I hate when people complain about these things because I feel that there some things that should be left to interpretation and that the filmmakers shouldn't have to spoon feed everything to the audience. The acting is amazing especially Jeff Bridges, you could tell that he had a lot of passion behind this project. This movie also has easily some of the most amazing visuals that are a true treat for the eyes. I loved how this movie handles its dense themes and made them worth while and interesting. Quite possibly the best thing about this movie is the way it handled the source materiel, it took some liberties and removed or altered the things that didn't work and preserved the things that were excellent about the book. This is a rare score that I give this many 10's but this is the 4th 10 of the year (alongside X-Men: Days of Future Past, Under the Skin and Chef). I highly recommend checking this movie out if you can. Score: 10 out of 10 Rated PG-13, 100 min. The Weinstein Company
