Like most HBO series it's very well written and performed with strong characters. I guess I have two problems with the show. First, I find Francis' friends deeply unlikable, particularly Molly Shannon and her suburban, wealthy **** stereotype/husband. I have the same reaction to Tracy Letts I've had in every other role he's been in- I want to watch him get hit by a car. With slo-mo and many camera angles. The main problem I have though is I just don't believe these two people would ever get together. They seem to be two very different people and I don't get how they'd meet or see anything in each other that would compel them to start dating. So yeah, when the whole premise of the show is on shaky ground it's hard to come up with a reason to keep watching.
