In the best Star Trek series, the story itself is the main protagonist. When the actors performances become the focus of the show there's usually a problem (witness Star Trek Discovery). I'm a huge Holly Hunter fan but you can feel the focus of the show leaning heavily on her quirky personality. This trend permeates the show leading to a lot of cringeworthy moments. It's not all bad. The relationship between Caleb Mir and Tarima Sadal is interesting. I love the competition with the war college but the strong emphasis on the personalities of the characters falls flat and often leads to overacting. It's like Shonda Rhimes produced a Sci Fi. Not my cup of tea.

I know why Mr. Colbert agreed to do this show (Money, pure and simple) but from the standpoint of cultural influence it's hard to top the excellent Colbert Report. Unfortunately Stephen Colbert the person pales in comparison to the brilliant Stephen Colbert character he played on Comedy Central. In his transition he gives up perfection for something that's just pretty good.

I'll admit it. I don't like Matt LeBlanc. I thought he played a serviceable idiot on Friends but I just don't buy him in any other roles. When I heard he was co-hosting Top Gear I just knew the series was a goner. You can always tell your watching a bad show by the delivery of the actors. It's almost like they're wincing as the words come out of their mouths. Kevin Nealon's talents are completely wasted here. The kids are the most interesting part of the show. CBS is usually slow on the trigger when it comes to canceling shows but I don't see how this mess can possibly survive.

The show tells the story of Norman Bates and the terrible circumstances that led him to his serial killer persona but the real hero of the story is his mother Norma, incredibly rendered by Vera Farmiga. Norma struggles to find some version of happiness and to keep her family together despite a series of events that would have decimated even the strongest of families. This show manages to take a film classic to levels that even Alfred Hitchcock himself couldn't possibly have dreamed of. Bravo to the creators.

While I applaud the concept, the execution could use a bit of polish. While I find Benoist's portrayal of the awkward, girlish Kara Danvers somewhat charming I hope she develops some confidence as the show progresses. The rest of the cast seems to be posing more than acting which usually spells bad direction but the main character is compelling enough that I'm willing to hang in for a little while longer. P.S. How is it possible that Calista Flockhart looks hotter now than she did 20 years ago? Clearly she's in league with Satan.

If you love cops then this is the show for you. The stories are told completely from the police department's point of view. Lawyers and Civil rights groups are portrayed as slimy publicity seeking, opportunistic caricatures while the police are (of course) usually hardworking, earnest and faced with impossible choices. Still the show is well executed and takes on controversial subject matter. I just would like to see a crime drama that told both sides of the story instead of portraying civilians only as thugs and criminals.

I've been a Steven Bocho fan since Hill Street Blues but even I have to admit a lot of Steve's work leaned on melodrama and quirky characters. Murder In The First is his best work to date even topping the legendary NYPD Blue. The secret is in the ingredients. The cast is amazing. Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson hit just the right notes. No over the top histrionics. Just good ole fashioned police work with all the frustration and sadness that comes along with it. Every episode takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. I don't know if it's ground breaking television given the recent slate of epic shows presented to viewers but it's certainly engaging television. Well done Mr Bochco.
