A good musical and another good money maker for Disney. Dont expect much in terms of plot or story telling, but like many other Disney musicals, the tunes are simple, catchy and all around fun to listen to. The story is about the future chief of a tribe that is suffering from impeding famine due to degrading natural resources. Apparently, this was happening because the goddess of nature lost her heart so the future chief gets on a boat and sets out to return the heart to the goddess. She is aided by the ocean gods (or whatever that entity is) and enlists the help of a demi-god (Maui) to help her. The story is not good. For instance, the ocean itself could have accomplished all the goals trivially if it wanted to but instead it got a weak human and a half god to do work which would have taken it literally, a few seconds to accomplish. But this is Disney, so you have to leave your brain at home. Overall the movie is fun hence the good score and kids will have a great time with the music and characters (my 2 year old loved it). I think its time for Disney to change Star Wars to a musical... whats left of it that is...
Unnecessary remake. It brings nothing interesting to the table and it a pure money grab. I don't mind remakes if they try to bring something new to the table like good humor or new twists but this one is pretty straight forward and honestly, there is no reason for it since the original movie was already good. The Seven Samurai remains the best of the pack and if your brain is too weak to enjoy subtitles then even the old 1960 western remake was ok (I forget what its called). Anyway, if you are young and have never seen the originals then this might be an ok film but honestly the bad guys were a weak point in this one. They were not intimidating nor intelligent which really brought down the story. In the original film, the village was facing an indomitable foe since it took place in a time of turmoil. The original foe did not select the village specifically rather the bad guys were more like a wave sweeping the country and that made them much more intimidating that some band of morons who follow a megalomaniac. I would skip it, especially if you have seen the original.
Arg... after a good 1st movie, this was a huge disappointment. They tried to add a ganster story to this sequel but it was full of plot holes and **** scenes that made no sense. Unlike the 1st movie, this one tried very hard to **** you into the plot which is the downfall of the flick. They should have stuck with the original idea which was a straight forward action movie. I also didnt enjoy the fight scenes nearly as much because they were even nuttier than the 1st movie. A guy snapped a mans femur with his bare hands... a 90lb girl with 2 hammers eviscerated a man with them like she was slicing butter with a hot knife. Another guy got hit 15 times with a baseball bat and didnt even flinch... The 1st movie had crazy scenes, but this one was more like a cartoon. Again, the movie has a very serious tone and they tried to give it a plot and they just couldn't pull it off. I couldnt get into it. Put a fork in it.
Enjoyable movie overall. It is mindless and straight forward but did a good job making you feel trapped and it was fun rooting for the brothers and the fight scenes were good though absurd. But if you are looking for a masterpiece you will be sorely disappointed. This is not original in any way and there is little story to really sink your mind into it. It is basically a copy/paste of any Die Hard film but with a more serious tone and no comedy unless you consider the fight scenes funny (which I did). Judge Dredd was almost exactly the same as well. For the most part, it is just like any mindless action flick. Watch it for what it is, and keep your enthusiasm in check. The ratings are inflated on this one probably because of younger viewers.
A hollow movie that would have been more fitting as a filler episode in a TV series rather than a feature movie. The biggest problem was lack of character development for the antagonist and support cast. On top of that, the results of the movie have no impact on anything. This is why it felt like a filler episode. The drive behind the plot is some guy went nuts from loneliness. You can fill in the rest with just that one sentence. Its very predictable and not thought out at all. Another sign its a bad movie is the existence of a lovely alien female in tight clothes to help distract you so you don't notice just how bad the movie is. When she was not on screen, there was just mindless action and by mindless I mean it was so unmemorable that I cant even remember any of it.
Is this some sort of joke? The animation, even for its time, looked on par than many Japanese anime of the same era with 1/1000 of the budget of this film. And for a stellar voice and music cast, I have never heard a more boring score of songs. All the music was very commercial and cookie cutter lacking in any sort of character and clearly designed as fan service rather than as a work of art. What are you people listening to when you say its memorable? It almost sounded like it was made over a single weed filled week of recording and I should know because I owned a music studio. You could have literally pulled 10 random bands or artists from a downtown music venue and had gotten a better music score than this cliched trash. The only good thing about this movie is the story is told fairly well. It was filled with plot holes (the story of Moses generally is a giant nuclear crater sized plot hole), but it was still told in a ok manner given it is meant for a younger audience. I dont imagine many adults can enjoying the story telling but I have seen more ridiculous things.
After watching three terrible movies (X-Men Apocalypse, Independence Day Resurgence, Where to Invade Next) , I was relieved that the Jungle Book was decent. I actually liked it more than the original which I only enjoyed for the music. Almost all the characters are portrayed better in this live action movie than in the cartoon including Mowgli, Baloo, Loui and Khan. Baghera was basically the same which is fine, and really the only disappointment was Kaa who is now some sort of magical female enchantress type character rather than being comically weak and clumsy. I prefer the original Kaa character over the new one but its a minor issue. This movie improved on the story by making it more cohesive (by adding more backstory) and I thought that it worked. I thought the final confrontation was complete asinine and I really missed the acapella style vultures from the original. I would love to have heard more music in this movie as well since that is what made the original memorable and because the story is overly simple. There was some music in the movie but it was more of an afterthought. I would have rather the music be more prominent like a traditional musical. Still a good movie and fun for the entire family.
A tablet written in Aramaic happens to rhyme in English when translated... yea, not a lot of brains went into this movie but for a lost footage horror film it is still one of the better ones which does say much since I have yet to see one that I like. The acting was terrible, and the banter was uninteresting and mostly distracting, but some of the horror ideas were not too bad. Sure they implemented a few jump scares and other cliches but once the movie gets going you cant help but cheer for the cave to kill everyone... not I am not kidding. You actually want them all to die because they are beyond stupid but the upside is you start to think of the cave as being alive in its own right. That is what makes it interesting. Most haunted house type movies do a pathetic job of making ghosts or monsters come alive but this one does it inadvertently. Overall an ok horror movie and by far the best found footage movie I have seen. Still dont expect something mind blowing but a good hour and a half of entertainment.
Yet another CG snorefest with no heart. A mindless action flick where Tarzan has matured and makes his way back to the jungles to stop slavery except that Tarzan as we know him was largely absent. Instead he was more like a brooding vampire which is exactly what his actors played in a unrelated TV series named True Blood. All his scenes were boring and the action was plain silly. The movie reminded of a real bad 80's style action cartoon... you know... one of those scenes where all the heavily armed bad guys are waiting to spring a trap, only to run away at the 1st sign of danger. All except the evil leader, who can apparently kill anyone using a necklace which makes awesome swoosh sounds whenever it is whipped around. But worry not, because nothing stands in the way of the mighty Tarzan who can break anything with his neck muscles alone! Puke. Still, it was better than the latest Independence Day movie which does not say much.
Well lets get the pluses out of the way. That was quick, now on to the negatives. The CG in this film is atrocious and extremely distracting. I dont know what happened but many of the 3d models looked unfinished especially their textures. They surfaces look too perfect and the effects from powers like Magneto looked very cheesy as well. Next, Apocalypse is about 5 feet tall and his armor looks life foam... the quality of costumes and makeup for his character were a travesty and reminded me of the kind of stuff you see in low budget TV shows like Dr. Who. The only thing he had going for him was his synthesized voice. Next, this was a sort of origins type story for the prominent X-Men but it strays a bit from the comics. This is fine and well if the origins made sense, but they didnt. For instance, Storm is depicted as an Arab with a Mohawk running around Egypt stealing and living on the streets. Well lets assume for a second that all that is believable, the question is why in blazes does she just use wind or other powers to take what she wants? She clearly had the powers already, yet she still got her hands dirty for almost no reason. Then we have Quicksilver (again) who is basically a God but somehow manages to be completely useless (yet again) despite having the power to pretty much end the story on his own. For instance, he could have found Charles and ran him to another continent during the showdown but instead he decides to go meet daddy because you know... he couldnt make time for both... oh wait... yea he could have. He could have saved Charles, plucked all the feathers off Angel, stripped Psylocke to her panties, shaved Storms head, grabbed a Cappuccino from Starbucks and he still would have had time to spare to talk to daddy... but no... instead he decides to go talk to dad and then go and fight Apocalypse. And then there is the fight... he could have skewered Apocalypse with 1000 shiesh kabobs, lit his feet on fire, teabagged him a few times, and then severed his head with a butter knife but nope... what does he do? Slaps him a few times and punches him in the gut... whatever. Next we have Charles who was basically worthless despite being able to control pretty much anyone he wants. At any time, he could have controlled any of the horsemen but instead he just sat around useless crying for help. Jean was also practically worthless until she "let go" and allowed her powers out which meant, we got to see a glimpse of the Phoenix again (yay... not). In the movies she has become a one trick pony because the movie writers think this is all she is good for. Oh what else... at least the didnt mess up Scotts part then again he didnt really do much anyway except mow down a door. Just a lot of wasted action and I have played 15 year old video games with better CG than this.
Previous movies were better thought out. This one felt more like a money grab because a lot of the ideas were not well thought out nor investigated. For instance, the idea of women controlling banking is asinine because a simple review of failed banks would show that women led banks fell just as often as male led banks. The points about the death penalty are equally bad because they make it sound like we kill most of our inmates when in reality very few people are executed every year and their crimes are generally so heinous that if they were presented, even the nay-sayers would want to execute them. There were some good points made in the film such as those on education but they missed the mark when interviewees started rambling about "culture" and "poetry." These are not the things that make a great nation, and they never were, especially not culture. The reality of life is that humanity as a whole, evolves around science and always has (not kings, the rich, or religion). In the old days it was simpler stuff like irrigation and print, later it was medicine and industrialization and today its all about tech and automation. Those are the things that matter in education and those are what push a country forward (and our entire species). But instead he wasted the interviews on meaningless drivel like pop music and good times, which incidentally were all made possible today, by science. When it comes to education you have to strike a balance between growth and practicality. I agree the homework in this country is practically worthless, but I disagree with not giving any assignments at all. Which brings me to the crux of the problem with his message about what is important in leadership and education... what happens if these people are faced with a hostile enemy like the Islamic Brotherhood? The answer is they will all fail because reality is that it will happen and when it does, these countries will not be able to defend themselves and their people will suffer greatly for it. I am not saying we should keep doing what we are doing with our military and our corrupt leadership and their corporate masters, but again, there needs to be some balance and that balance is not what these countries have achieved, nor has it been achieved here in the USA. Overall, this was not a good movie because again, it was not well thought out. I still enjoyed some parts here and there and certainly I would love to move to a country with more vacation time and respect for workers and better k-12 education but the rest of the film fell flat. Again, his older movies were better.
The funny interactions between Fox and Bunny outclass the really poor plot and political correctness message being forced down your throat... not to mention that toilet quality pop music. There were plenty of funny scenes and characters and I found myself surprisingly entertained despite rolling my eyes at some of the messages that were not necessary nor representative of reality. But if you ignore the juvenile politics, there is some funny writing in here as the story revolved around a stary-eyed bunny cop who wants to make the world better but ends up making things worse due to not being as smart as she thinks she is. Luckily she encounters a wise Fox who had lost hope in society but found it again through his bunny counterpart. The go around town interacting with other animals to solve a crime and get into trouble along the way and it was fun to watch since the movie does not take itself very seriously. A good move over all.
I dont remember Deadpool being this lame in New Mutants or early X-Force books... This movie is basically 1.5 hours of toilet humor quality banter. If you are into that, great, you will love this movie. I am not. Why, you might ask? Because i am no longer in middle school and even back then, I wasn't really into the fart jokes or crude humor. Thus for me, this movie was boring as hell. The movie spends most of its time in character development and this is one of few movies where I really wanted it to stop and just become a mindless action flick. It was tedious watching the story development because we already got the point in the 1st 15 minutes of the movie. But they kept hammering the characters in with more toilet banter scenes that did not add anything to movie or the characters. You dont feel any different about Deadpool or his girlfriend 1 hour in vs 10 minutes in because the development is repetitive. Anyway, Deadpool does his thing by breaking the 3rd wall and making jokes through fights would be fun if the humor were a little smarter rather than from the mind of a 12 year old looking for the approval of his peers. The actions, when it did happen, was ok but again nothing new. Lots of slow motion clips and CGI but it looked good. Colossus looked a bit too clay like for me but it was acceptable. The problem is the story, and characters were simply not interesting. The bad guys were also equally lame and the film is riddled with plot holes albeit its a comedy (I think)... Not my kind of film. I would have enjoyed it more if I were 12 or 13.
Yet another movie that proves just how worthless "pro" reviews are. I suppose this is why 99.9% of them can barely pay their rent. This movie may not be a masterpiece, but it is worthy of watching and that is a lot coming from me. I am a tough critic... just check my reviews. The visuals look good though Doomsday looked a bit like clay. The comic book tie-ins were fun, but they are not exactly "loyal" and a few might be confusing for folks who dont read comics but its trivially easy for them to look it up if they care to (specifically the future dream). Acting was good all around although I think that Affleck is a miscast as was Alexander. The fight between Batman and Superman was ok but inconsistent with Superman's powers. The fight against Doomsday was great but very short lived and as stated earlier, not exactly consistent with the comics but that is not a requirement. Lets look at the flaws. Waaaaaaaay too much going on in one film. They took two major comic book stories and pressed them into one film. The problem with this is that character development suffers and that is exactly what happens. Bruce Wayne ends up getting more quality screen time than both Clark and Wonder Woman so the movie feels like a Batman story, with the other two characters thrown in as support. This would not be a bad thing if it were not for the fact that one of the two major plots was based on a major Superman story (Doomsday) that spanned many comic books. So here we have a major story line about Superman and Doomsday and it gets washed aside in favor of getting to know the dark side of Bruce Wayne. The other problem I had is with Affleck... he did a good acting job but no matter how hard I try, I find him too goofy to be Batman and it killed immersion. His facial expressions are just funny... and not intimidating yet he is cast as something that is supposed to bring nightmares to people. I mean... he just didnt look right even with a mask on. He is simply too soft. When he says that the Wayne's were originally hunters, and walked off with a serious look on his face... I laughed because A) he is looks goofy and B) he played a character in a (great) movie called Good Will Hunting lol and that is about all he has in common with hunters. Alexander was by far the most poorly written character. The problem with his character is that he is kind of dumb and his motives are just childish. His mannerisms are more like the Joker or Riddler than they are of a Luthor, who are usually well grounded and complex. Instead, Alexander is just another nut job. It simply was not believable that someone like him would be able to orchestrate all the things that happened but I suppose anything is possible... just look at politicians and many corporate executives. Other than those points, there are plot holes in this movie and several minor issues but they all revolve around point #1 in that they tried to cram too much into one movie. The Doomsday arch should have been left to the next movie while the Batman v Superman battle should have remained the focus of this one with more screen time given to develop the plot and more character development for Superman who seemed to be somewhat lackadaisical in this movie. Overall however it was a good movie and a fun time... again, from me, this is high praise. I want to see Superman again and I want to see Wonder Women and although I like Batman... whenever I saw Affleck I quickly got pulled out of the movie. This is no fault of his, he is an ok actor, but frankly Matt Damon would have been better and even that would be sort of funny to see. Collapse
Total trash. All the characters reacted in an unbelievable manner given the situation. The conflict between them was forcefully shoved down the viewers throat on top of being formulaic and cliche. The social interactions were laughable. One second people are rational, the next they give up all hope. One second they dont believe in anything, the next they are all religious zealots. There is nothing good about this movie. It does not illicit any sort of emotion of any kind and I am not sure it should be called horror.
After watching the travesty that is episode VII, I was reminded yet again of how good the originals are. Lets face it, Star Wars is pretty much toast now given how poorly Disney handled the latest episode. It has become a formulaic, stale franchise with no love for itself or story telling... This is the extreme opposite of what the original title stood for... Star Wars a New Hope was edgy for its time. Investors wanted no part of it and even James Earl Jones didnt have full faith in it. Their budget was low, their special effects innovative but cheap and the focus of the film was entirely on story and characters. It took a bunch of no name actors and made them stars to the point that even costumed actors whose faces you never saw, became famous. A New Hope revolved around a political struggle between a powerful established empire and a rebel alliance that suffered from the tyrannical and imperialistic practices of the empire. The theme was very believable because it is common in politics and the way it was portrayed was fairly believable. The empire wanted to capture and kill the remaining rebel leaders and the journey starts there; with one leader getting captured and begging for help. In many ways, it reminded people of their own struggles, many of which are against a much stronger "foe" be it the government or corporations, a bully or whatever and Luke was a accidental hero who fights against all odds with the help of friends to eventually beat back an indomitable foe. Its a very 'feel good' type story that many fantasize about and that is probably why so many related to it. This movie was different than most because of the number of central plot actors. Even though Luke was the hero of the story, a lot of characters got equal screen time and unlike most movies, the division of time between so many characters actually worked. Normally such a production results in a bunch of characters with no personality or unbelievable story arcs but not in this movie. The characters all came off as believable given their story and situation and had valid reasons to do what they did from Han Solo, Leia and Luke to Yoda, R2D2 and Vader. It was a well written and well directed movie and one that proved good story trumps star actors (they were not stars yet) and ludicrous budgets. This movie has been remastered and I honestly think the remasters are good despite the changes made (they are fairly minor to the story). If you have not seen it (likely because you are young and episode 7 didnt do it for you), definitely give this older movie a shot.
Not the worst horror movie I have ever seen but the film was a cliche. Jump scares galore, shaky found footage camera, abrupt loud noise... bleh. Sometimes these things are ok but it was simply over done. There was also little mystery and no depth to the story or characters and no comedy so there was little to keep me entertained all the way through. The movie is about a guy who loses a wife and is out to prove there is no supernatural... turns out he was wrong. You can guess what happens next.
What a fun film! I think this is one of Tom Hanks best performances. Its almost a throw back to 80's style sappy films but it does not go overboard. The character development was superb and even though some of the characters were not believable, they remained memorable such as the security staff and the port administrator. This movie is about a guy from a fictitious country who gets lost in the paperwork because his country ceased to exist while he was in flight. The shenanigans begin when his passport is rejected by US customs and the administrator of the terminal fails to communicate with him due to language barriers. From here everything goes haywire. The administrator cant get rid of Mr. Navorski (Tom Hanks) and and Mr. Navorski cant speak English and cant find anyone to help him translate what he sees on the TV (about the war in his country). Since his passport is not valid he cannot enter the USA and the airport authorities have no where to send him since his country no longer has any flights going to it. So what does he do? He starts learning English by comparing two travel guides, one in his language and one in English (recall this is pre-cell phone days). Along the way, he finds ways to make money so he no longer has to eat crackers with ketchup, lands a job, befriends a crazy Indian, goes on a date with a stewardess, helps a baggage handler meet and marry the girl of his dreams, helps people around the terminal in various ways, and eventually confronts the terminal authority that had him trapped (with the help of his new found friends). Its not supposed to be believable any more than Big was believable, and there are plot holes a plenty but it is a fun movie and was never meant to be taken very seriously. I highly recommend this movie.
Lots of claustrophobic moments are forced on the audience... if you are buggered by such a thing, then ok, but for others it was just a waste of time. The movie is ok at best, but the use of symbolism is eye rolling. It would have been fine without the need to make it seem mysterious or "deep." It isnt deep. Its formulaic and if you have seen other movies that force symbolism down your throat, this will present nothing new. Icarus... lol. God and life/death... lol. Maybe if I was still in high school all this would have been interesting but im not in my mid teens anymore. The story is about revitalizing the dying sun; a topic covered many times in the past, and the acting was good as was the adventure except in the times where they dragged it out too long. I felt that the movie would have been better served as an action flick rather than a psychological thriller but that is just me and it might be because I have already seen this topic several times in the past. The movie was doing fine when it was reasonable but at once point it turns to spirituality and takes a nose dive. No longer was it about the science of the mission, but rather it became about ego's and personal beliefs and some supernatural dude who love getting a blistering tan (a la Freddy Krueger). Watch it if you have nothing else to watch... avoid if you see something else that interests you.
If you dont know science dont write stories with tech at center stage. Simply as that. The premise of this movie is that some college kids discovered a "frequency" that had never been observed previously using a computer and apparently a computer hack can fix the problem... Clearly the movie was going for some sort of wireless frequency and once the aliens arrived they took over internet servers. There is no such thing as a frequency we never knew existed, not within known tech. There are only frequencies that are not usable for various physics reasons. So anyway, the premise is garbage but hey, its a horror movie... or at least it tried to be. The problem is that its not scary in any traditional sense. There are no scary monsters, just some blurry human looking things that apparently take away your will to live. How? No revealed. Why? Not revealed. Who are these aliens? Not discussed. But hey, they are apparently afraid of the color red! So mysterious.... oooh aahhh. Lame. Stick with Pinhead, Jason and Freddy.
This movie is not good. Its not really horror in the traditional sense, it is more of a psychological thriller. The audience is placed in the shoes of a hit-man... a very stupid hit-man with little to no will power and no measurable intelligence. How he became a hit-man is a mystery but I suppose the fact that he was broke tells us what we need to know. The movie starts off as a domestic drama and changes tones as the hit-man gets a job. We then follow him while he does his job and we find out that there was more to it than simply killing a target. Here is where it all falls apart. Apparently this employer was targeting him from the start and who was the employer? Some sort of cult. What is their motivation? No one knows. We can speculate... but but that is just boring so I wont bother since there are thousands of possibilities. The hit-man is captured by the cult (they could have done this any time) and placed into a fighting arena against an unknown gladiator in a mask (they could have done this any time as well). Well without giving it away, his torture was complete by the end of the death match. All the cultists remove their masks and that is the end of the movie... the problem with the movie is there was a plot hole almost every 10 minutes and about 5 plot holes in the ending.... but its not worth rambling about any further. The movie is not good. It needed some serious character development especially for the cultists who were not creepy, scary or anything. I also did not care for the hit-man, his wife, his friend or anyone else so it really did not matter how things turned out in the end.
Kiddie movie about time travel with teenagers who cant do anything right. Its completely uninteresting. No humor, no action, really bad plot, and a horrible premise. This is yet another dumb genius movie brought to us by a clueless writer and director. At some point they need to realize just how insulting such characterizations are to real smart people and that nailing this into the minds of the young and uneducated is absolutely not good for society. At the very least, make this a comedy like Back to the Future but no... this is just a monotonous mess. Teens discover a way to time travel... and like any brain dead moron, what do they do? Send themselves despite many failed experiments that proved how dangerous the attempt is to make. And what do they do with the time travel? Well of course... the most important thing in life is to go back to high school and humiliate a bully who picked on you... and go watch a decade old concert. Stupid movie all around for people with very low to no intelligence to speak of.
Aside from the mostly incredible cast, this movie is excellent on its own merit. Its a slow moving story about corruption, in this case, within the police force in New York and how one good cop influenced others who were morally struggling with the activities they saw happening around them. It also plays on how good intentions can sometimes lead to complacency even in light of wrong doing. The movie spends most of its time on characterization which makes the transition believable by the end. There are some holes in the movie which stop me from rating it higher such as the handling of the cop in hiding by both sides... i mean... why would you lock him up in such an obvious place and leave him alone when you know every cop is after him? Why did the corrupt cops not handcuff their enemies when they had the chance? Stuff like that. But again, this movie is less about the plot than it is about the characters and their internal struggles so the plot holes do not detract from the movie very much. Overall an enjoyable movie and a great acting job from many very famous actors.
This is one of those rare movies where they took a turd of a plot and turned it into a good movie. Lets face it, the plot was boring and we should have been yawning through the whole movie but somehow... I kept watching scene after scene without falling asleep. The directing and writing was very good and Matt Damon played his role well enough. But ultimately nothing could save this movie from being another unoriginal survival story with yet another Hollywood portrayal of scientists as being borderline idiots. I mean... another gravity slingshot solution? Really? This is semester 1 physics level problem for Petes sake and has been done dozens of times in TV shows and movies. But what was enjoyable was the dialog between Matt and NASA and watching how one would survive on another planet should it ever happen. Maybe I was so interested in the science of colonizing another planet that it kept me up through the movie. I am not sure honestly but this is no masterpiece and the reveiws are clearly bloated. At best, this is an average flick.
Pretty good and much better than I expected it to be walking in. Everyone did a great job in this film and despite hating pop-culture and rap I found myself liking the Adonis character. He was believably flawed yet down to earth and likable as was his girlfriend. Stallone also did a good job playing the reluctant teacher albeit his story has really gotten much too tragic to the point of absurdity. Hopefully the next Creed movie will give Rocky a much needed break (what happened to the money he made from the last film?). This is (yet another) coming of age story, this time about Apollos illegitimate son Adonis. He starts off as an immature brat looking for fame but unlike his mirror characters (Tommy Gun) he has some semblance of empathy and decides to follow the right path. He mature greatly by the end of the film and you couldnt help but cheer for him as he even helps Rocky overcome a situation of his own. The love story is also fairly believable and like Rock with Adrian, the relationship plays an important part in helping Adonis move past his hangups about his father. A good movie. It is not nearly as good as Rock 1, slightly worse than Rocky 2, but it is much better than 3 through 6. The one thing this movie is missing is a great music track... there really was no good music in this movie unlike the unforgettable masterpieces by Bill Conti in the old movie. I really think they should have used at least one of the original songs in this one but maybe that is just the sap in me talking. Good flick overall and I am looking forward to a part 2.
A good stand alone sci-fi thriller. Not brain candy but good for mindless fun. The plot is unoriginal, and the story plays out as something between Star Trek, and Aliens but not as good as either. The ending was interesting enough but I really disliked all the pseudo-psychology stuff which is why I knocked it down a bit. The story is just another human resettlement plot with an ark being built and people being frozen for long range travel. Like always, someone wakes up, does stuff, and things go amok. The characters are actually ok minus the main antagonist (revealed towards the very end) who was not believable. Everyone else was either trying to help the ship when things go wrong, or are there just to survive in a situation that includes genetically mutated human monster-like things. There is also a ninja character and of course a cannibal... If you want a mindless movie then this will do the trick for a couple of hours but dont expect much to talk about.
Slightly below average overall. Not in the same league as episodes 4-6 but better than episode 1 and about the same as episodes 2 and 3. It does not follow any written Star Wars lore but has similarities to the comic books. Instead of following the stories, they went on a tangent and basically created an unoriginal and weak reboot of episode 4. The problem is that the character felt shallow. The charm of the old movies is that the actors brought the characters to life, whereas in this movie it felt like they were forced to follow a rigid script. The new characters are not bad, but they just don't illicit any emotion and the relationship between the trooper and the jedi just seems forced even though it started well enough. It just moved too fast and was not believable given each characters history and the situation. The next problem is the story is weaker than episode 4. The antagonist is not intimidating in any way and the **** character and **** angles were not as good (nor as believable) as the struggle between the empire and rebels. The sith replacements (the 1st order) are just dumb... dumb dumb dumb and their lead was supposed to be very powerful and killed off all the jedi that Luke was teaching (which is why he went to exile) yet he cant even beat a non-jedi in hand-to-hand combat sometimes. The good jedi is equally ridiculous. She basically learns everything Anakin and Luke learned over decades, on her own, in a few days and was equal in lightsaber combat to a trained jedi killer. She makes Anakin & Luke look like chumps but whatever. Then you have really dumb stuff... A mega-Death Star... really? Is this Dragon Ball Z? They should have just followed the comic books. The special effects were modern, though not ground breaking, and there is no Jar Jar Binks so that was good. Lea and Han needed more screen time and deeper story but they chose to focus more on action scenes (a la Abrams movies). This was clearly a money grab. It was not horrible but it was uninspired.
Caught me off guard, and gave me a good laugh. The characters have been done before, so this isnt exactly original but the dialog made it fun to watch. There is some gore in the movie so if you dont like blood stay away, but the movie isnt horror so it really does not detract from anything. The main character is basically immortal and we get to follow him around as he deals with things from an immortals perspective. His personality is dry and literal and they use that to lighten the mood in an otherwise violent and absurd plot. Again, all this has been done before so no points for originality, but it was done well enough to entertain the audience.
Much better than the review scores reflect. This movie is ridiculous in every way and it was done on purpose. Every part is overacted; every scene overwritten; there is fan service everywhere and it worked because the movie does not try to take itself seriously and it is meant to be a modern light hearted fun time. Yes, they use cliches and yes the ending is sappy and silly but then again look at the subject... we are talking about Peter Pan. This is not the Hunger Games which became just as ridiculous while trying to be serious. This movie worked just like Hook worked in the past and like Hook it is a coming of age story albeit Hook was sort of a regression of age story. I like how this movie portrays the origins of Peter Pan, it was something I had not read or seen before so it was a pleasant surprise. I also like the fan service, I dont know when Nirvana became uncool, but it was so out of place (ridiculous) that it made the scene memorable. I really like the actor for James Hook and I like how they interwove these two classic characters in a way that makes their later stories have more intrigue. Before this movie no one really knew what the relationship was between these two character and if you apply this movie to the originals, it gives it some meaning. Overall, this was a fun movie. I am going to go against the trend and give it a solid 7. 2 points higher than average. There were some problems with the movie. I actually did not like Peter Pan very much and I am unsure if it was the script or the actor that made him seem too "emo" for lack of better term. It was almost like he was bipolar, one minute he is an emotional wreck and the next he has a wide smile. One second he is crying and the next he is is ready to lead an army. Everyone else did a better job.
The 1st movie was ok.. not worth writing about, but not bad enough to leave an impression worthy of remembering. This 2nd movie is horrible. So now we have zombies, **** romance triangles with meaningless sappy scenes and equally sappy music, even worse cliche dialog, extremely stupid characters (who would not survive a night in a tent no less the end of the world), unlikable characters and a plot that that is completely unbelievable and very poorly written. It tries really hard to force emotional situations on you (similar to the other stupid series, Mockingjay or whatever it is called), and you are expected to care because... well the music is sappy lol. The story reveals what the disease from the 1st movie was talking about. Turns out, its a zombie apocalypse and of course, the wolverine clone is the cure. Then you have one of the stupidest betrayals followed by worse decisions and more sappy moments and by the end my stomach started to hurt and I wanted to puke. What a horrible series. Unoriginal, formulaic and snore fest.
Insanely overrated. Once it hits video, the ratings will plummet unless Disney pays for reviews. Movie is insanely boring. More boring than the last 2 Avengers. Its not horrible, not but nothing was great about any of it. Special effects are nothing special by todays standard, the story was very bad and the antagonists were completely unbelievable and not in a funny way. Since the bad guys were so stupid, it destroyed the plot and frankly, I was hoping Ant Man would die in the end. The romance angle was equally unbelievable and both actors were simply not enjoyable to watch. The entire move was a cliche and a bad one, the cliche being that comic books have no depth and are cheesy thus its funny when you a make a movie that way... it isnt. And not all comics are written by idiots like the Avengers, Iron Man and now Ant Man. Since I basically fell asleep during this film, I am going to rate it slightly below average (average on Metacritic is a 5).
One of the better comedies to come out of the 80s, it is a bit crude due to its age but the characters are simply unforgettable from the stars to the supporting cast. When you can remember supporting characters clearly, you know that a movie did something right though it does not hurt to have people like James Earl Jones playing a comedic supporting cast in your movie. From the slutty sister, to the yukky hair family and the barbers, all the characters made an impact despite very limited screen time. This is very hard to do in a 2 hour movie and although its cheesy, I actually thought that the love interest is believable making the movie better than one might expect. In my opinion, this movie is probably Eddie Murphy's best comedic performance. Hint, you should watch this movie after Trading Places since it makes a funny reference to the other movie.
Good movie overall about a man who thinks he is an alien. The entire movie is about trying to figure out if he is nuts or really an alien. I wont give anything away for people who have not seen it, but it is a good movie and the lingering question keeps you interested all the way to the end. Kevin Spacey did a great job and the movie was overall well above average to me (5 being average on sites with lots of reviews). Its not as good as The Man from Earth, which had a similar plot but better dialog, but it was still a fun movie to watch.
Yet another 80s type movie albeit this one is not as over the top as the others trying to play on the popularity of the decade. For the most part, the movie was very boring. The dialog is simply uninspired and feels somewhat forced. The romance edge took up a lot of screen time and was not good at all. It should have been left out or less emphasized. The comedy was slapstick as always however it didnt connect very well in this movie. I did laugh about 3 or 4 times but it wasnt like some of the laughs I had in other comedies. The plot was non-nonsensical in that there was no adversary characterization except for a few words that Q-Bert made about his race. Anyway, its not the worst movie on earth, but it most certainly is below average by my book. I would skip it.
This is NOT HORROR! This is a violent drama and that is all. A bunch of kids get lost. Bad guy find them. End of story. Seriously, that is it. The movie is very monotonous and I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, or something shocking, or even funny and it never came. This was a movie for the sake of making a movie, not a movie meant to entertain. Not good.
It was not a ground breaking movie, nor a bad movie by any stretch. A lot of reviews (especially at IMDB) overthink the plot (like this was some deep scifi flick) and state that its yet another tweeny horror movie... it is not a teen horror flick. There is no **** teenage love story in this movie nor any nudity nor a bunch of topless guys. There are no cheap gimmics in this movie designed to draw teens. It is a straight forward horror drama about two sisters and how they try to cope with one turning to a werewolf. The quality of the film is definitely limited; this was not a big budget flick but at the same, the low budget and lack of CGI really give it a very natural eerie feel similar to how old horror movies used to be. The only exception is the werewolf itself which looks pretty 80s (in a bad way) but was not really in the movie for very long any way and the movie is not really about cheap scares anyway. I always felt like older horror movies were much more convincing due to narrower camera perspectives (smaller resolutions and angles) and use of imagination (making people think) over CGI and special effects. Todays average horror flick is very bad (more like garbage) and has mostly devolved to formulaic snore fests requiring over the top violence and gore (a la Saw or Hostel) and/or cheap surprise scares which stop working once a person gets older. This was a nice change of pace and I plan to watch the next two movies.
It is very painful to watch a beloved franchise from childhood brought down by a money grab. You would think that with all the money being thrown at movies today, they could hire quality writers with some background in science (since this is a sci-fi setting)... but alas, this is yet another embarrassment to the Transformers franchise. You know a movie is very bad when you regret watching it for free... Clipping my nails would have been more exciting than this movie as we continue to see stupid plots bring outdone by even stupider plots. This time, we are going to top it off with even more hollywood cliches like a dumb scientist (when will they realize that this is a misnomer) bring led by his "responsible" tween daughter in tight shorts and heels. Yes, the scientist is the idiot of the show... well at least they got rid of the rapping **** transformers I guess...
Wow I cannot believe the user score on this... maybe I missed something but the movie was boring. The special effects and action was great and who doesn't love a post apocalypse setting? But this movie suffers from very boring characters who were both uninteresting and poorly developed. I never cared for the Max himself, in fact, I rank the old movies as average or below, but the other characters were very 1 dimensional and I just didnt care what happens one way or another. The movie reminded me of Transformers, lots of pointless action and no heart (just replace cgi with live action). Overall, I would never watch this movie again so its slightly below average to me (remember, 5 is mathematically average on Metacritic).
This movie was all gimmicks and no substance. Designed to be a eye candy for the sake of 3D, it is basically a boring adventure about humanity being unpredictable. The problem is that the fancy 3D and CGI cant keep your attention for long once you are accustomed to it and if you take that out of the movie, you are really left with bad sci-fi flick about "duality." "Human duality" is probably the 2nd most boring subject of a movie behind all the "coming of age" stories. The military and science are once again the bad guys while the aliens are innocent and good. I really dont mind movies that portray humans as bungholes (because frankly, as a society, we are), but its getting old and this movie did not even try to be original. There were no cliffhangers, no interesting characters, dialog was mundane and the plot was predictable. The entire movie could have been done in 15 minutes.
The originals were not great and suffered from some of the worst acting of the 90s (Goldbloom is one of the worst of all time) but they were better than this. Every character in this movie behaved like a high schooler with **** envy. It was boring. Frankly if this were real and humans (especially scientists and such) were this stupid, Id rather we go extinct and let the dinosaurs rule again. Just avoid this movie, you are better off spinning yourself in a chair for entertainment.
My friends 5 year old noticed the holes in this movie... what a let down. The animation looks good, the characters are ok on their own, but the story... oh my god the story is horrible. Cliche after cliche and forced emotional situations. It was clearly following a formula rather than a story. Whoever wrote the story needs to be shot for how badly it progressed. I actually predicted the entire movie in the 1st 10 minutes (I didnt know anything about it going in) and the only thing I got wrong was who the villain would be. I figured that the movie seems to cheesy that it would try another predictable twist like making the elder brother the bad guy and he is doing to get his GF back. That is how predictable the movie was. No originality whatsoever and it got worse as it went along. I almost puked when i saw it turn to a bad superhero flick. My friends 5 year old asked us why the kid didnt just build more of the small robots or make a new remote control (referring to the brain control interface).... how sad is it that a 5 year old figured that out? Not good. Despite how bad the story was, I thought beta max or whatever his name was, was a funny character. The aunt was funny too. Everyone else was **** including the main character Hiro. Overall, average at best. Highly overrated.
Definitely overrated. Its not a bad movie but I thought it was long winded and ultimately not very convincing regardless of what you thought happened in the end. The biggest problem however is that it was not original, which is hard to do. But for that reason, I cannot really rate this thing over a 7. It brought nothing new to the table that we had not seen before and frankly I thought the kid was over acting while the mother was underacting or was just not believable in many ways. Again, its a horror movie so I am not expecting much but at the same time the movie itself didnt have much else to talk about. It was not fun like some horror movies and it was not written well enough to feel plausible. Its kind of like Friday the 13th taking itself seriously... A solid 6 in my opinion.
Good movie if you are in the mood for destruction and violence against bad guys. The story itself is straight forward and revolves around a vampire killing vampire. You can probably guess most of the plot just based on that one sentence but the good thing about this movie is you dont have to put up with a lot of mind endless numbingly bad dialog, horrible over acting and unnecessary scenes. It gets to the point by telling you about the character and plot and then executing without delay. I can point to a lot of action flicks that took themselves too seriously and ended up being embarrassing to watch (Transformers is a good example of bad action movies). A good flick, good enough to be remembered after more than a decade.
Crouching poop is more like it. For sheep who want to belong to the hip crowd and the artsy fartsy folks with below average IQ. Clearly the reviewers were all paid off or cherry picked (Sony is notorious for fixing reviews), because they cant get average real people to positively review their garbage. Extremely boring film with nonsensical plot, uninteresting characters that have no depth whatsoever on top of extremely stupid looking martial arts like we were back in the early 80s again (but without the grit). No redeeming qualities anywhere. This one was so bad I actually walked out of the movie theater on its premiere more than a decade ago. I asked and was given a refund. I watched it entirely a few days ago and basically played with my phone the second half of the movie out of boredom. For what its worth, I like action movies but I don't need explosions and effects to find enjoyment. I need a story 1st, and then anything else is gravy... it a movie after all. If i want to look at a painting ill go do that but this is a movie and not a painting. A movie is supposed to have a story to tell otherwise there is no reason to make it into a movie aside from appeasing one inflated ego. Even if a story is non-sense it could still be interesting if characters are interesting or funny. This movie has none of that. It might as well had been told in a 10 page picture book for kids. People need to stop selling out just to fit into the crowd. Grow a spine and call it what it is. This is a bad movie that was overrated through corporate payoffs.
Not nearly as bad as worthless "pros" want you to believe. It is an action movie. Plain and simple. If you are looking for a history lesson on Vlad, then go elsewhere. As a action movie, it was slightly above average. The story itself is nothing new or exciting but it was fun to see Dracula take on entire armies and win single handed. Certainly the Turks were portrayed as vile so it was satisfying to see them bleed. Aside from that, there is really nothing notable about the movie. Nothing really bad to say about the movie aside from the fact that I wish it was deeper on origins of the 1st vampire, but whatever. I could see myself watching this again in a few years if there is nothing else on.
If this were not an X-Men movie then it probably deserves a 7 or 8 but the problem is that in the title, it says X-Men. Thus when I review this, I assume it has relations to previous X-Men titles and since that was the reason I went to see this film, the movie fails. Now the question is how do I rate it? Do I rate it as a stand alone movie? Do I rate it as a horrible sequel the previous X-Men films? If someone wanted to write a movie like this, why couldn't they create a new franchise? Why did they need to milk the X-Men name for a few more viewers and take a chance at destroying the franchise (this is one of two reasons why comics died in the 90s)? There was no loyalty to the fans and the companies made it obvious that all they wanted was money when the fans wanted continuity and a good story. This is dishonest in my opinion so I am going to review it as an X-Men film. The effects were good but honestly this is the 21st century and those effects really dont pop out any more. I didnt see anything new so no bonus points for innovation. As an X-Men film following the X-Men continuity of previous films, there are too many plot holes in the story. I wont go into every detail because the list is much too long but here is quick summary. 1 - Xavier is alive. Even if we assumed he jumped bodies, why is he still in a wheelchair? Stupid stupid stupid writing. 2 - Quicksilver could have accomplished the entire plot goal on his own... but he was not brought along for the ride. They just sent him home to watch tv while the world was on the brink of collapse. 3 - Stryker is not the same person from older movies yet logan remembers him as the guy from the old movie. Note that in both movies, the time is 70's. In the old movie, he was 40s-50s. In this movie he is in his 20s. What? 4 - Wolvie got adamantium claws in the future... but he lost them in the Wolverine movie.
