Jak and Daxter Collection8
Jun 22, 2013
3 fantastic games wrapped up in a less than stellar port. Ill just start off by saying I have never played any of the jak games before. And although I had a bit of a hard time getting into the game initially mainly due to the framerate problems, I stuck with it. And boy am I glad I did because these games are truly fantastic. But, you probably knew that. Yes, alhough the poor framerate is initially discratcing you do get used to it after a while, but it is far from ideal. Since the games are slower paced platfoming/adventure/action titles it doesnt interfere with gameplay too much, however it does take away from the beauty of the game. especially that of the wonderfully detailed animations. On a side note I also experienced an incident where a few audio tracks cut out. So if you were thinking of picking up this collection on the vita there are some major hurdles you will have to overcome in order to experience some of the ps2's finest on the go. It is a shame that more effort wasnt put in and it was better optimised for the vita, since MGS 2 and 3 worked great on here. But, you have to take what your given. I am still having a blast with these games however and cant wait to finish them to completion.

Urban Champion5

Just because its a terrible game, that doesn't mean its not entertaining. This is the stupidest thing you have played in a long time. Its a little hilarious yet upsetting however that urban champion got arguably the best and most comprehensive 3d update of all of the 3d classic games.

A very fun and addicting rhythm based running game. although there are moments where it will frustrate, its very fast paced and satisfying with fantastic presentation. Well worth the asking price.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable8

YOU LIKE DEATH? THEN DIE!!! Man, I love this game. Sure the "graphics" are poor (even when compared to its xbox 360 counterpart) The "polish" is lackluster, and the animations are laughably stiff, if you resonate on the same level as this game, you'll have a blast. When a giant horde of bouncing alien spiders outnumbering you 1000 to one is slowly and mercilessly bounding your way, and all you have is a rocket launcher to literally "launch" the aliens hundreds of feet, the awesomeness indescribable. If you've always wanted to play a ridiculously silly old school Japanese monster/invasion movie in video game form look no further. Come for the sillyness and camp, stay for the addictive gameplay. But, be a little weary of the repetitiveness. Also, the addition of a new character and fully functioning online coop over the xbox 360 version is fantastic and gives the game a lot of staying power. On a side note, the bite sized nature of the missions is perfectly suited for online play.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified6
Nov 15, 2012
I'll just start off by saying that the biggest problem with this game, is that there is simply not enough content, especially if you are not interested in replaying the same missions over again to beat it on the highest difficulty and beat your friends. There are ten single player missions, each of which can roughly be completed in about 4-5 minutes, so if you do the math, thats right timmy, the game can be beat in under an hour. However, the game is refreshingly challenging, so in reality, especially if you play it on higher difficulties, you could easily double your time with the single player operations mode, but then again, that's still only two hours. Thankfully though, the single player doesn't stop there. There are time trials to complete with cardboard targets too shoot, which was a lot of fun, and hostiles mode, which is effectively a somewhat stripped down version of the MW3 survival mode. I am a huge fan of survival modes so I got a big kick out of hostiles, especially since it was also quite challenging. I would have liked to see some more weapon customization and more strategizing between waves (between each wave all you can do is pick up a dropped care package) but still, fans of survival based gameplay should enjoy it, however, keep in mind that hostiles is not cooperative, which is a downside. Ofcourse, single player is only half of the game, or if you have the attitude of the majority of COD players, 10% of the game. Multiplayer in BOD is surprisingly well fleshed out, and although it does have some omissions, (killcams, no in game voice chat, no weapon camo) it does a fantastic job of translating and replicating the intense fast paced combat of its console brothers with killstreaks, tons of gun customizations, perks, custom loadouts and the like. Just like COD on consoles, its far too easy to get **** in to the multiplayer and refuse to put the game down. But, unfortunatley, there are some key problems that detract from the multiplayer, and one of these issues is common to the problems I had with singleplayer: lack of content. There are only six maps, and most of them are very tiny and somewhat cramped. Nukehouse is basically nuketown cut in half, which gets really crazy really fast, which you will either love or hate. Personally, I would have preffered if they had just left nuketown untouched. Ultimately, it makes sense that the maps in this game are so small, since the game has a limit of 8 players, and the smaller maps do do a pretty adequate job of hiding this fact, but its brings spawning and other issues to the forefront. Even though one of the maps is a nearly exact replica of COD4's shipment (awesome!) I would have preffered more maps with a larger variety of game modes. Multiplayer also only has four game modes (team DM, kill confirmed, free for all, and a mode called drop zone) much fewer weapons, very few perks, some of which aren't even that useful, and a small amount of kill streaks that are somewhat unbalanced. The 10 kill streak attack chopper can be shot down with 1 quick shot of a rocket launcher, which makes the final and most difficult killstreak to achieve not very rewarding. However the most annoying problem with the multiplayer is the gliches and connection problems. Very frequently I would wait to load a match only to have it instantly revert back to the main menu, a few times I was abruptly disconnected from a match with no notice or pop up that said why this happened. I will say however that when connecting to a match did work, it was very quick. Glitches were also unfortunatley common. Expect to see attack choppers and spy planes stuck in the ground, among other things. All in all though, the multiplayer can be a blast if your able to work around some of the issues I have discussed. If there one thing I cant say about BOD, its that it plays poorly. This is the exact gameplay you know and love wonderfully translated to the vita. The framerate is generally very smooth, and the controls work extremely well. These are bar none the best controls I have ever experienced for a handheld shooter, even if throwing grenades can be a little cumbersome at times. Graphics are also surprisingly decent, there are some uglies at time but looks good on the whole. Sound is also good. Even with all the problems I have discussed, this game still gets a 7 because this game plays nearly as good on the vita as it does on consoles, which is a huge feat. When your zipping around the multiplayer maps shooting up your enemies with all the speed and precision you'd expect from a COD title, or pushing through hostiles to show your friends whose boss, its easy to forget the numerous shortcomings of this game. This game has the potential to be great, but unfortunatley Activision gave Nihilistic the shaft with a low budget, no advertising and a ridiculously short development period. BOD declassified is better than it could've been, but not as good as it should've been.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation8
Oct 31, 2012
In terms of content and core gameplay, for the most part, this is the Assassin's Creed you know and love. It's missing a few bells and whistles from the console versions but stabbing dudes is undeniably fun as always. Given its content, this game should be a 9, but its brought down by too many strange glitches, bugs, and wierd AI oddities. One time the game would not let me progress through a clearly marked door, and I had to restart the mission, wierd clipping problems are a common problem, sound effects can fail to play back, or occasionally music for that matter (actually, sound is generally not is good as it should be, although this game has a great musical score) NPC's occasionally dont render properly and pass through objects in a wierd sort of way, sometimes the circle button indicator strangely doesn't show its function. I could go on more, but im sure you get the idea. Preformance is also quite sluggish, which is a shame. Visually however, the game generally looks really nice. You may notice a couple of uglies here and there, but for the most part, its definatley one of the vita's better looking titles. It's a shame I have to take off a point because of preformance problems and glitches, but I have always found that a large part of what makes assassin's creed so enjoyable it's wonderful animations and visceral looking action, and the these problems do take away from those high points. In some ways I feel like this game was rushed to release alongside with the console AC3. I was going crazy with exitement towards this games release, and all though in some ways it is dissapointing, in many more ways its a good time. Here's to hoping they release many future passes to polish things up a tad. Oh wait, I also forgot to mention how cool some of the new weapons in this game are. They're awesome.

LittleBigPlanet PS Vita10
Sep 19, 2012
I have always believed that the vita has been one of the only consoles thats powerful enough to rival the current generation of consoles, and as such games on the vita wouldn't need to be scored as traditional 'portable' titles because the hardware is just as capable as consoles. So far, this hasn't been true, until now. Ive really enjoyed playing games like uncharted golden abyss, but if you compare that game to its ps3 counterparts, you can't help but be just a little disappointed with golden abyss. I've always thought the excuse 'Hey that reviewer gave that game a negative score! He should be reviewing this game in the context of the expectations set by other portable titles' shouldn't hold true for the vita, so THANK YOU little big planet vita for proving this. Not only is little big planet ps vita a great conversion of a console title, it actually improves on the existing formula by adding some seemingly minor changes that definitely benefit the game in big ways. Things like the saveinator that allow you to make games where the players can actually save their progress through your game is a little edition that brings huge possibilities with it, so not only can you make quick arcade like experiences now, but you could make a full fledges rpg game that takes 10 hours or more to complete! The new vita specific touch, tilt, and rear touch functionalities are surprisingly a lot of fun as well, and the ability to take a photo of anything and upload it to your level (Don't worry I haven't seen any **** filled levels yet) is a really fun edition. Oh yea, and unlike the psp lpb this game has online multiplayer, and it works really well, pretty much any level can be played with someone else, well, except for the levels that the creator has specifically made as a single player level. There are a couple of things that could make it better however; it would be nice if you could play miltiplayer with ad-hoc, and wouldn't it be cool if lbp ps vita was able to play the existing games available for the ps3 titles? But this game does way to much good to make those few things even matter. If you have been on the fence about the vita, YOU NEED TO BUY THIS GAME! I really hope an awesome community forms around ithis game, because it definatley deserves it. Its a wonderful game that honestly makes little big planet feel like it was designed with the vita specifically in mind. I'd write more praise for this game, but I need to get creating. In short, this is the reason you bought a vita.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition9
Sep 6, 2012
Even though this is a poorly optimized port with brutal keyboard and mouse controls, a capped low resolution, and only two graphical options for pc gamers to tweak on/off (motion blur and anti-aliasing). Dark Souls is still one of the most incredible games of this generation, if you can handle the brutal difficulty. The thing I appreciate about this game is the uniquely old-school design of this game. Your dropped in the middle of a harrowing yet utterly beautiful world and have to fend off horrible and extremely creative beasts with amazing controls (if you're using a gamepad) that are not to complicated to learn but really engaging and rewarding in use. It's an open world is designed so expertly that you dont even need a map. You're always unlocking new shortcuts which makes the world very intertwined and easy to navigate. One of the best games I have ever played.

WipEout 20489
Jul 31, 2012
It's WipEout, and it's awesome. The framerate isn't as smooth as I would have liked, but as a trade off this game is gorgeous. In my opinion, its the best looking title currently on the vita. It doesn't have some of the weird graphical oddities that uncharted has (glowing characters, freaky looking eyes and hair) And the background are ridiculously detailed. The visual style of the game is also terrific. Its really interesting to see the tracks look a little less futuristic and more organic. Oh and, overall the sound in this game is incredible. The sound of your ship thundering down the track with bad ass electronic music in the background really amplifies the already tremendous atmosphere in the game. Also, the controls have been refined since pulse and pure on the psp to make the ships feel as if they have a lot more weight to them, which makes the game a lot more fun and authentic (well, as authentic as futuristic anti-grav racing games can be). It's a nice touch to see different classes of ships (speed, fighter, agility, and concept-type crafts), even if you'll most likely only use the speed and fighter ships, and the total number of teams has been reduced. The multiplayers' fun, but its a little bothersome that you only get to choose between race and combat game types between levels. I'm personally not as big of a fan of combat races and straight up racing, and it would be nice to choose beforehand. Other than the lower than hoped framerate and online, this game is just plain awesome. Those minor issues never detract too badly from the rest of this blast ****. It doesn't reinvent WipEout but the new features and changes it makes to the formula are definatley enjoyable. I also feel I should mention that for an additional 13 dollars or so you can buy all of the content from the ps3 version of Wipeout HD and Wipeout HD Fury, which is HIGHLY recommended. (If you don't have it already, it also purchases the ps3 version of Wipeout HD Fury). Oh and I almost forgot to mention, this is one of the few vita titles that actually has cross-play! Its a little difficult to find a match but its really cool being able to play against people on the ps3. If you own a vita, this is practically a must own!

Metal Gear Solid HD Edition9
Jul 31, 2012
Peacewalker.... Peacewalker!? PEACEWALKEER! (If mgs: peacewalker was included, it would be a 10.) You already know how great mgs is, so pick it up. It would also be cool if they added the first mgs into this collection too, just for the sake of the story (Or at least a cinematic recap of sorts). But... that may be asking too much. The thing that I love about metal gear solid is the really dumb sense of humour that helps to settle you down from some of the more serious parts. If you didn't have the patience to play these games back in the day, then you wont be able to play them now, thought. Other than a few touch controls (which can be a little hit or miss) this game remains as deep, interesting and methodical, or as slow, boring and detached as you remember it. Fortunately, anyone who isn't an impatient and whining needs-in-your-face-action-all-the-time little kid, should remember these games as the masterpieces that they are.

Gravity Rush10
Jun 12, 2012
This game is absolutely fantastic. From the beautiful art direction to the perfectly fitting soundtrack to the simple but exhilarating gameplay, this game has it all. Its clear that this game draws inspiration from a lot of other great titles, but the way this game has combined elements from other titles makes it a truly unique experience. You have probably never played a game like Gravity Rush before, and that's a good thing. Flying, (or falling I should say) and exploring the games beautiful environment is great fun. Although there isn't quite as much depth to the open world setting in gravity rush, what is here is a blast to play. I should also mention the vita specific controls, which are great. Tilting the vita to look around your environment as your floating really adds to the disorienting nature to the game play and really adds to the gameplay. You COULD use the right analog stick to preform the same function, but it isn't nearly as immersive. Also doing a gravity slide by placing both thumbs in the corner of the screen and tilting is alot of fun. If you've been on the fence about buying the vita, this game alone should change your mind. Fun and original titles like this don't come around to often.

Mortal Kombat (2011)9
May 31, 2012
Other than the fact that the character models in this game look like absolute crap, and the vita is definatley capable of a lot more graphically, this game runs at a smooth 60 fps and plays exactly like its console counterpart, and even has some silly new modes which take advantage of the vita's features. I should also mention that I'm a complete noob at fighting games but I had a fantastic time with this game, even though I got my ass handed to me in every single online match (online also works very smoothly btw). Other than the graphics, this game shows the true potential of the vita - a true console experience on the go. Oh yea i forgot to mention it includes all the DLC from the console games. This game is huge. Its worth twice the price. GET IT NOW IF YOU HAVE A VITA!

Resistance: Burning Skies7
May 30, 2012
I had a good time with resistance burning skies, but some flaws in the game prevented it from being a truly realised portable fps. The game play is fun and predictable shooter action with a slight old school flare and controls pretty well, including the touch screen commands, but to me the biggest problem of this game is the lack of scope. One of the biggest selling points of the console resistance titles is the experience that you are part **** war encompassing much of the earth, but in this game you feel like your the only soldier in a tiny battle in NY. Besides the empty environments, the below par sound design also contributes to the emptiness. Also the framerate can dip frequently but this doesn't happen too often. Aside from this I still had fun with this game because the shooting controls felt very nice, but this is definatley a grade b shooter by console standards but is acceptable because you've probably never seen a true fps experience on a portable like this before. I personally found resistance: retribution on the psp was overall a stronger title with a better campaign with more interesting characters and story, but this game has better controls. This is a decent head start for fps' on the vita and proves the potential of the system, but the vita is definably capable of delivering a far better experience than this game. This game is proof that outsourcing your game to a third party developer does not always produce ideal results. Although fun, the vita needs stronger fps titles if it wants to gain footing in the handheld market.

Steel Diver7
Apr 29, 2012
This game makes me sad. Its not a bad game by any means, but it could have been so much better. The controls are purposefully unresponsive which may sound like a bad thing, but if this game had fluid and responsive controls, it would ****. The whole poit of this game is to make you think about your next move, and requiring you to anticipate whats next, which makes the gameplay smart and rewarding. The graphics and art of the game are quite nice, and the sound effects are very atmospheric, which really help to immerse you into the game. The great thing about this game is how unique the gameplay is. Chances are you haven't every played a sidescrolling submarine strategy/action/racing/sim game before. This is why it pains me to say how little gameplay is existant in this game. You get three subs, and 7 short levels, and thats it. If your good at the game you could probably beat the hardest/longest level in the game in under 10 minutes. Although it's fun to replay the levels with different subs, your doing it on the same 7 levels. Although when you beat all the levels with all three subs you unlock expert levels, their just the same levels with a few extra objects put in it. The short time trial mode and crummy battleship ripoff aren't enough to make up for the overall lack of content. Although I do think the gameplay is quite fun and the game is atmospheric, I can't shake the feeling that because of the relatively small amount of content in this game it would have been better suited as an eshop downloadable title. If you can find this game for 15 or possibly 20$ I could recommend it but otherwise the price is just to steep. Its a shame there isn't more content because the game itself is quite intruiging.

Shinobi (2011)8
Apr 29, 2012
To anyone that loves challenging old school game play, than you will love this game. For people who would rather play Barbie Horse adventures 3D, then this may not be for you. Although the graphics aren't superb, the art style more than makes up for it and succeeds the majority of the time with a few of the levels looking a little drab. However, this is all made up for by the excellent controls and slick gameplay, and the controls are never to blame for your deaths, although it should be noted that you will occasionally suffer from cheap pitfalls. This is the kind of game where you will die like crazy, but with every death you learn just a little more which will help carry you through on your next life, which makes the game very difficult but at the same time not too frustrating (aside from the aforementioned pitfalls), but also extremely rewarding. This is a great old school game if you are up for the challenge.

Kid Icarus: Uprising10
Apr 29, 2012
Kid Icarus Uprising is an absolute blast to play, has a fantastic soundtrack, and has wonderful graphics and art design, with gameplay that is simple but at the same time very complex and challenging if you want it to be. The difficulty is perfectly scalable to your skill level and the variety of fun and exiting weapons is just plain awesome, and managing your weapons and fusing old weapons to create new and exiting ones is very intriguing. Although the surprisingly long and highly replayable single player is the main bulk of the package the multiplayer is really exiting as well, and works exactly how it should. If you enjoy this game like I have, you will be playing it for months, if not years because of just how much fun it is and how much content is packed in here. But if I'm talking about Kid Icarus Uprising, then I can't help to mention the controls, and the truth is, they work very well. For anyone used to dual analog control it may be difficult to get used to the controls at first, but once you do you'll realize that the controls deliver an accuracy that dual analog cannot. One thing about the controls however that I believe I should mention is the fact that after prolonged periods of gaming, say one and a half to two hours, your hand may start to cramp, however because of the relatively short levels for the most part in the game and the nature of the gamepay which is best enjoyed in short controlled bursts, it shouldn't be a problem, unless of course if you're having such a blast you simply cannot put your 3ds down. I have played this game for a total of 26 hours now and I'm still regularly coming back for more. Another thing I should mention is that even though a lot of the gameplay aspects are different than the original kid icarus, it still maintains a lot of the feel of the original, and still feels like a kid icarus game. Oh, and the voice acting is great too, which is great because otherwise the non-stop dialogue would be a little tedious. Overall this game is absolutely fantastic and anyone with a 3ds needs to play it. It is one of the best reasons, if not the VERY best reason (beside super mario 3d land) to own a 3ds. You will not be dissapointed.
