Wow this was so good, and I hated "X." Where that movie was superfluous and forced, this one feels personal and its superficiality enhances the character study. Mia Goth swings for the fences and scores big with an unhinged but believable performance as the lead, and Ti West's direction supports her portrayal 100%. It might feel predictable, but I really think it earns every minute of screen time
If you've ever wanted to view lesbianism through a straight person's imagination, with the added baggage of inane dialogue and bad acting, this is the movie for you
Wow what a fantastic and creative horror movie. Some of the best that the genre is capable of. Fantastic acting from Franciosi and Springall, and fabulous directing from Morgan
Not for the faint of heart, but it is a masterpiece of humanity and brutality. It clearly shows Jennifer Kent is a masterful director and storyteller, and I hope she and the cast get the recognition they deserve for this film
It's too bad that a movie with this much potential has very little to offer the audience. All the technical aspects are top-notch, so the presentation is quite good. However the movie seems to know as little about its protagonist as the viewer, so it never has anything very interesting to say about him or his need to kill. This leaves Maniac as an okay rental but unlikely to be memorable
I enjoyed this quite a bit, though by the end it feels quite aimless. Von Trier's style brings a lot to the serial killer genre. Just wish he'd stuck the landing
It's hard to believe Nolan made this, only two years before Memento no less. It's just a very silly and amateurish movie, even more irritatingly boyish than its protagonist
Pretty pointless movie. As an homage it's okay, and it has some impressive gore. But the story and characters are too ridiculous and aimless. Even as a rental you'll be disappointed
Desperate garbage. The only sign here is the heralding of Shyamalan's pathetic decline after two good movies. This is a complete joke of a story, manipulative and empty
A low-key film about intense violence and dehumanization. Rylance is very good as the protagonist, an officer in a fictional but recognizable "empire" which is losing its humanity. Depp is memorable though I wish his role was more substantial
A promising start is let down by a pretty generic majority, only to finish with a wicked final 10 minutes. I really wish the script had gotten a second pass to bring out some of the juiciness the movie manifests at the very end. As it is, I can only say it's a decent rental. But your brain will wander in the middle and you can actually let it
A fantastic psychological horror film, well constructed and considered. It really delves into the nature of horror itself as well as its effects on the audience
Unfortunately 0 is the lowest this movie can be rated, even though it deserves a negative score and its entire cast and crew should be tried for crimes against humanity and art. If you're thinking of watching this, I suggest you save your money and consume feces instead
Aside from some pretty cinematography, this movie is devoid of any humanity or artistic purpose. everyone involved with its making should have a facial tattoo so they can be publicly shamed
This should have been a short film. Because as clever and creative as it is, ultimately it becomes repetitive and dull. Once you figure out the twist, the rest of the movie will become quite unpleasant
What a ride this movie is! Like an insane rollercoaster that drops you off back where you started when it's over, but you don't quite feel the same as when you got on. And deliciously, you feel strongly that you might want to go for a second ride....
Vastly underrated, Cimino's epic western is well worth the watch. Having seen the 2.5 hour version, it seems criminal that this was panned and ruined careers. Sure it's a bit over-indulgent, but it lends to the flavor of the film and gives it character, without which it would be devoid of drama
Ugh I feel like I got tricked by the trailer and a couple of good reviews, but this doesn't have any magic. First of all, the trailer played like a horror comedy, but there's no comedy here at all. Second of all, while the cast is okay the characters are very shallow and pretty much all unlikeable. So you end up with a movie that isn't funny but also not really scary, and it can't be thrilling because you're not gonna care about the characters either. Alisha Weir is okay as the girl, but while her physical acting brings out some thrills her line delivery is pretty poor
Nothing can salvage this tedious movie that thinks it's "fun" but is as boring as your friend's kid trying to get attention. A group of elite supermen take on a mission with absolutely no tension and triumph as easily as a dog taking a ****, which is pretty much how the script was written, it seems. At least Cavill is having some fun, but his constant mugging gets pretty old. Everyone else feels like someone you'd like to avoid inviting to a party if you can help it. Also, the constant green-screen backgrounds are really obvious and make the movie feel even smaller than the writing
A whole lot of fun, and a joy to watch as it makes the most of its limited budget. This isn't some transcendent film; it's a comedic homage to 80s post-apocalyptica and, actually, a pretty sweet story about friendship
A moody thinkpiece, but boy is it more satisfying than it ought to be. This is pretty much all concept, forcing you to pay very close attention to piece together even the shadow of a story. But if you can come to it on those terms you'll find a lot to like and some that you'll never forget
While not transformative, this is a great time and very fun. Chris Pine leads a great cast and proves yet again that he's not only a charming leading man but quite funny. The special effects are very good and the frame is constantly full of treats for fans of D&D. While a good 10-15mins could be shaved off, this is well worth your time
A movie about how a modern civil war in the US would NOT happen. Unfortunately this movie squanders a good premise on pretentious tension. Almost none of the actions by any character make any sense, and by the end any tension that might have existed vaporizes. And it's weird because the movie turns out to want to be about journalism, but instead of being set in an actual conflict it uses a fictional conflict that, like all of Garland's work, feels like a teenager thought about it for a few hours
While it's much better than I expected and has a couple of moments that could go down as bona fide classics, the film also veers too often into cheap shock. What's most shocking about it is that for a movie that deals so much in the Catholic faith it has very little resonance with actual Catholicism and misses some good opportunities for depth. It's definitely a solid rental and for many it will delight quite a bit more, but it's hard to be sure
Intermittently comedic but ultimately tedious, this would-be adventure feels more forced than it ought to with all the talent onboard. Clooney is particularly grating here where he should shine, almost as if the movie was filmed in a rush and they used his first take of every scene. In fact the entire script feels like a first draft when a bit of tightening might have produced something truly great. The soundtrack is fantastic, but it serves a weak film that is big on atmosphere and caricature but low on substance
More charming than horrifying, and more frivolous than inventive, it's still well worth a watch and could easily become a cozy Halloween tradition. The movie has an interesting premise and conceit, with the "found footage" format used very well here. Unfortunately, it does liberally abandon that format for convenience and near the end almost entirely. And the story, dripping with cynical potential at the beginning, devolves into a pretty standard and earnest possession tale by the end. Still, the movie is anchored by its technical confidence and most of all by strong performances. Special kudos go to Dastmalchian and Torelli, who have great chemistry and timing. Charming when is required and... less so when that is called for. Maybe not worthy of a full ticket price, but I think a rental will be warmly welcomed
There's probably a decent movie buried in here somewhere, unfortunately they didn't seem to throw any ideas out and it feels like three movies stitched together. The number of characters alone is overwhelming, and a lot of scenes feel rushed. The comedy is really groan-inducing, which is a shame because some of the horror actually clicked. All of this renders the movie REALLY forgettable, even though a lot here had potential
There is just nothing to hold on to here. It's not like there is any one aspect of the movie that is horrible, but every part is forgettable. Probably an okay rental, but keep your phone handy
Initially I thought the premise for this sounded promising, so despite the dull trailer I watched it. Unfortunately, it is dull, dull, DULL. It's kind of hard to believe how little effort went into this when a good writer could have at least mined some meta humor out of the trope. A great writer could have gotten a lot of mileage from deconstructing that trope. Instead this movie furiously seeks the easiest solution to every conflict that arises, wasting a decent cast in a shockingly boring movie that is NEVER funny
I wish I had better things to say about this one. Since it's clearly aimed at younger audiences, it may seem harsh to judge it too critically. But in the end it's remarkably forgettable, with a lot of the humor landing on the grating rather than the charming. Probably still a decent rental for kids, but adults will get bored early on
Much like the first part, this is a visual feast but lacks any heart. Which is a shame, because it sheds the humanity of the novel. This remains an impressive production, but I just don't see what the appeal is when it feels so sterile
This is one of the few cases where the trailer promises a decent movie but the movie itself fails on every count. From the awful CGI-vomit action to misplaced humor, it's a mess of nostalgia and tone-deaf heroics. It doesn't help that this is tied so strongly to Zack Snyder's vision for DC movies, which is already defunct. At least the cast is trying, but having Ezra Miller as the lead is really tasteless
A feast for the eyes and the heart, even if it falters a bit in terms of story. Still, the young at heart will find it difficult not to get swept away with the exuberant optimism of this film
Gareth Edwards continues his quest to show the world some neat images, but fails yet again to provide anything a human could relate to. I imagine young people will enjoy this because there's some cool ideas here, and aesthetically it's a cute film to look at. But unfortunately the best parts of this movie will always be in the audience's imagination than anywhere actually on the screen
Ugh it's heart-breaking because there's a lot of potential and a great cast trying their best here, but this is flat beyond belief. I guess the only worse thing than a Snyder movie is one that's trying to be "nice." As usual he delivers on the visuals, and there is a core concept here. But he should NEVER write a word of a screenplay again; his credit going forward should be director and story strictly Hardly the worst way to spend a couple hours given the price point, but even as background noise it doesn't break any ground
It's simply a pleasure to see a franchise treated with respect to the intellectual property. So it's with great joy that I say: This is a great Godzilla movie! Treat yourself to the theater if you can, and stick around for the glorious scream at the very end of the credits
It takes a little while to get going, and relies a bit much on humor, but when it gets going it does hit hard. It's not as good as Homecoming, but it's waaaaay better than Far From Home. Fans of Peter Parker will find a lot to like here, even if it's not one for the ages
While the film superficially can seem disjointed or even incompetent, the more time I have to digest it the more layers I discover. That doesn't mean it's for everyone, and even I wanted desperately for some scenes to end sooner than they do. But I feel strongly that the film's style and tone serves to enhance the story and especially the themes. The movie is a coming-of-age story but about someone who is rather late to the event and not dressed for the occasion
It's a big mess, but it has some tall peaks and is ultimately harmless fun. Unfortunately the movie at times seems to be aiming much, much higher. But pretentiousness aside, it's entertaining enough (especially Gosling)
