This game sets the bar for what I want from 2D-HD RPGs. The gameplay is fun and engaging. Overall the macro-level story is "story-lite" and this is balanced by nuanced interactions that can happen between the protagonist and the rest of the cast. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys 90s SNES/PS1 era games, RPGs, or Science Fantasy. All of the modern quality of life changes are value-added and make the game so enjoyable. The only flaws I can prescribe this game is (A) that the macro plot is held together by Deus Ex Machina and author hand-waving. And (B) some characters are just walking shonen anime tropes. This game has a very well implemented real-time-with-pause combat system. The overall difficulty is more challenging than the average RPG, but it is far from a difficult game. The player is free to choose how they overcome the game's challenges; craft some rings to mitigate fire-damage, embrace the mechanics of combat, out-level the current area, or even craft late-game weapons.
