Fallout 46
Nov 12, 2015
If you've played Halo 5 or MGS or Dyinglight ..... or whatever .... and wondered in their graphical awesomeness on the xBone compared to their 360 predecessors then prepare to take a giant step backwards with Fallout 4. You play Fallout 4 and graphically you generally feel you could be playing Fallout 3. The controls and combat feel clunky. Inventory is messy - and the crafting tutorial is non existent so when you need to (or quests ask you to) make stuff prepare to be seriously frustrated. 6 hours into the game and I still can't workout how to deconstruct 'junk' into component resources. Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating. The first cave you explore in Fallout 4 will make Skyrims first cave feel like a gigantic underworld wonderland in comparison. The Fallout 4 maps feel small and cluttered - walk 30 seconds in any direction and you're in another town/village. fallout ain't a 10 and it aint a 0. Maybe a 5 or 6. But its still 'Fallout' and theres not much out there (maybe Dragon Age 3 or MGS5 in a 3rd person way) offering any serious competition in the openworld 1st person RPG genre. The hype mill says the xBone will offer PC style Fallout mods, but given how the xBone struggles with Fallout 4s limited graphics already I'll believe that when I see it. In the meantime I'll keep my fingers crossed for a megapatch to address all the obvious and serious concerns people have been raising. .

Halo 5: Guardians6
Oct 28, 2015
Its graphically very pretty, but the maps feel close and confined not open and epic. The audio is good and the voice acting is good, but the characters spout a lot of gungho militaryish jargon one liners. The game plays fast and smooth. Unfortunately for me, I play games for the stories and characters not the AV bling or multiplayer bragging rights and, several missions in, I'm yet to be hooked by HALO 5. I'm playing on for 'the Chief''s sake because we go back a long way and I want him to look good to inspire his squad. Locke, well he just feels like just another generic supersoldier and I don't really care how many times the aliens shoot him down and he squeals for his bros to save him.

Dishonored: Definitive Edition6
Aug 31, 2015
Played Dishonoured through (twice) on the PS3 and it remains one of may all time favourite games, so I was unsure about buying the 'Bone 'ultimate' version - but I saw the digital version for £15 on the x'Bone store and I had a few games to trade so I did. Graphically it looks a bit sharper and feels a bit smoother than it did on the PS3 - but the cell shaded slightly cartoonish graphics limit the improvement. I don't regret buying it, but I am getting sick of being sold 'remastered' versions of games I've already bought and played. even if they are 'the classics'. Its almost enough to make me go back to being a PC gamer to get the 'remastered' version from day one.

Aug 31, 2015
Played all of the GoW series on the 360 so I was unsure about buying the 'Bone 'ultimate' version, but I had a few games to trade so I did. Graphically it looks a bit nicer and feels a bit smoother than it did on the 360. I don't regret buying it, but I am getting sick of being sold 'remastered' versions of games I've already bought and played. Still, I had to laugh at the articles saying that people who bought GoW remastered would be able to play GoW original versions when backward compatibility pops out on the 'Bone. Even if they will be able to, why would they want to?

More of the same, so if you liked it before you'll like it again. Excellent tutorials for newcomers. All the old figures seem reusable for players of previous versions - and if you have the old portal you can reuse it too (though the price of software + clonewar figure set seems as much as the price of the full starter set with software+portal+clonewar). BUT the xBone version seems no different to the 360 version. I've played both versions for several hours and the 'Bone version is just as graphically juddery as the 360 version. Quite an amazing achievement really. Same on the toybox builder - those sliders that tell you how 'full' your building site is go up just as fast on the 'Bone as the 360, so no 'Bone mega builds, at least not yet. Still an excellent game.

Should be a good little game. Reasonably priced (if you get it on sale for £5 or so). Graphics are functional, bordering on attractive. Weather effects and terrain features like trees can make it difficult to see whats happening, but weather graphics can be turned off. Interface is pretty standard for these types of games. BUT it some really bizarre things happen ingame for no obvious reason. Last game I played I had fields full of crops, paddocks full of animals, more hunters, fishermen and gatherers than you could shake a stick at - and all my population starved to death ............?

Magic Duels: Origins8
Aug 22, 2015
Very good game. As 'free' as free games get, its quite hard to find fault with. I've played the first three 'campaigns' in the story mode so far and its everything you'd hope it would be. The tutorial is comprehensive and easily understood, the interface is smooth and logical. The AI opponents are capable. The only thing I don't like so far is that countdown timer that requires you to hit a pause button to do 'interrupt' stuff - rather than prompting you to continue if you have nothing to do - this is supposed to be thinking game, not a reaction timer, after all

Its very good. I found it spookier than DS 2 & 3. I also found it harder. Perhaps because I was a bit out of practice, having not played a DS game for a while. But also because the enemies seem to attack in 'hordes' far more often than in previous DS games. Enjoyed revisiting locations from the previous game and seeing how they'd changed. Good story add-on, stays true to the 'look & feel' of the previous games - and provides a fitting epilogue to DS3.

Graphics - graphical quality is disappointing more like XB360 Morrowind (or Amalur) than Skyrim. And after seeing the quality of the XB1 graphics in 'Destiny', ESO being an MMO is no excuse. But at least you get a choice of 1st person and 3rd person view of the cartoony mid-distance popup terrain. NPC animations (like locations) quickly become repetitive. Dialogue is average. The occasional quality dialogue just shows how poor the majority is. Voice acting the same, it ranges from good to poor, but mostly poor. Come on, this is an AAA title! Paying some of the voice actors on the free Skyrim mods may have provided better quality. Gameplay. The MMO elements elements are really intrusive. You do a quest, and on your trek to the boss the enemies just keep respawning, behind you, next to you, in from of you (if you got them with a bow). Don't bother sneaking, your 1st shot from the shadows at long range and the bad guys are after you like bees to a honey pot. And when you battle the boss in the end room there is usually a horde of uninvited 'other player' guests in there with you. It looks and feels more like 'super mario brawl' than epic fantasy - especially when the boss whacks you and you fly 100' across the room. After you beat the boss get out fast because they'll respawn for the next group of heroes and whack you from behind. And please put in an 'other player voicechat/nametags off' option. One that you tick and it actually stays OFF instead of turning itself on again. I don't want to see the silly names or hear the babble. Worst is the pay-to-play 'incentives'. I'm level 10, I've accrued about 1.5K coins by doing every quest I find and how much is a horse? 10K for the base model. But then a steel sword will cost almost 800. Seriously? No, I've just paid £50 for the game. I'm not paying more £ to buy 'in game currency' for a damn horse. And what's with the cooking? I'm searching for treasure and everywhere in crates and bags I'm finding cranberry and honey and ginseng and recipes to cook food over a campfire. What is this 'Cooking Mamma 5'? But back to the boss I've just battled. The treasure is ..... 7 coins. Great. So I trek back to the quest patron and the reward is ........ 37 coins and a magic staff. A magic staff for an armour plated warrior. Thanks for that. The immersion is flowing away like the boss's blood. But its Elder Scrolls and Its Tamriel and I'll give it a 5 and keep playing for the exploring, the lore and the fluff and the fond memories of Skyrim. Otherwise, it would be a 2.

Not a bad as you'd expect after experiencing Witcher 2, but not as good as you'd hope given that its over a year since Elder Scrolls Online was released. Its platform games like this that make you realise just how good Mario, Sonic and the other classics really are. 1 point for including multiplayer, 1 point for allowing customisation (albeit very limited) of the character. Gameplay is tedious, though the randomisation may appeal to novelty addicts. No surprise its a PSPlus free game this month (June 2015).

Its OK. Its a fun fast shootemup against a giant monster. Graphically very pretty with 'realistic' looking terrain, but very cartoony feel to the characters and gameplay. Only real problem is I can't help feeling the game plays too fast for the size of the monster. OK, I know its just a game mechanism, but something the size of a truck - that takes a shedload of ammo to bring down - just shouldn't move as fast as the Alien. As a hunter you'll spend most of your time chasing headlong through the terrain after your monster tracking dogbot thing with no real idea where the 'giant' monster is aside from the briefest glimpses. Personally I'd have preferred a stealthy hunter hunting monster (like a Predator or an Alien) or a giant slow hunter stomping monster like a Godzilla rather than a superfast Godzilla ..... but that would be a different game.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition7
May 27, 2015
Classic Diablo gameplay - which is both this game's strength and weakness. Enemies charge at you in furiously spawning waves, while you grind your character up though the levels and grab ever and ever better kit. Every so often a crazy tough but easily defeated End Of Level Boss will briefly entertain you with their repetitive moves. Local (single screen, multi controller) multiplayer, which is a real strength of this game, as well as online - but you can easily defeat all the baddies by yourself or with your choice of AI companion.

Elegant minimalist fast 'just one more try' gameplay. Fun in short bursts (maybe 10mins per day). A new random map each day helps, but after a few days you do start noticing the standard 'cut & past' terrain chunks the maps are composed of, even if they do shuffle around a bit each day. Nice inclusion in the free PSN May 15 game line up, especially as its PS crossplay.

May 27, 2015
Could be a good game - certainly interesting DS1 prequel backstories (far moreso than DS:Ignition) - BUT I'm finding it impossible to get past the 2nd mission using the standard ps3 controller! And if you quit a mission before completing it you're right back to the very start of that mission next time you play only to grind to a halt at the same frustratingly impossible fight next time around. Maybe its playable with a PS3 Move controller (or a PC mouse), maybe even easier Move co-op - but who has a Move controller?

Interesting snippet of Dead Space backstory wrapped around 3 minigames. One minigame (lights and mirrors) is quite good, one is frustrating (racing lines through obstacles) and one is just confusing mess (firing spinney things through a maze). I bought it on sale just for the backstory, but I wish I could skip the minigames, or at least select a difficulty level.

Very good. I'm very late to play this series, but Dead Space 3 is a good follow on from Dead Space 1 and 2. The story is a logical progression, but personally I didn't like it quite as much as the previous games (especially the opening act). Graphics are again excellent, even by current standards, Controls are still logical and smooth - I can complete it on 'normal' difficulty and I'm no shooter expert., but I did find it a bit tougher than 1 and 2. I didn't like the equipment upgrade mechanism as much as the one in the previous games, but that just personal preference. Gameplay is again well balanced from start to finish even though the monsters feel a bit faster and smarter than previous games.

One of the best board games for IOS. A clear and pervasive D&D theme, Clean, functional visuals and easy game interface. Strong AI players. Based on a very good board game - and stays very close to the actual board game. Its a complex strategy game to play and you have to plan ahead to have any chance of winning - so best to learn by watching a net playthrough (or knowing the actual boardgame) rather than skimming the ingame text rules. A good ingame tutorial would be nice, but these seem rare in most of the computerised board games.

Everything you'd expect. One of the best racing/driving games. BUT. BUT. BUT ...... the install time from physical disk!!!!!!!! This game took well over an hour to install from disc, with the optical disc drive on my xbone clicking and clunking all the way through. I thought my brand new game disc must be faulty so returned it to the store and changed it. Reinstalled the game from the new disc and exactly the same issue. Wondered if my disc drive was faulty so de installed and reinstalled my three other xbone games - they were all fine and reinstalled in minutes. There is something seriously messed up with the install process (or disc file structure, or anti piracy security, or whatever) of this game.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth1
Jan 17, 2015
Slow. Slow. Unplayable slow. My basic Win 8 laptop will happily run Skyrim (low settings, game controller, all DLC plus 50 or so mods) at 25FPS. But Civ Beyond Earth (small world or tutorial, min graphics settings) runs like a snail swimming uphill through treacle. It takes so long to load the game and menu screens I'm never sure whether its crashed - then simply scrolling around the map in game is a frustrating jerky nightmare. This is a sim FFS - so how much graphics power does think it needs! It may be a good game, but I doubt I'll ever find out. The developers need to get the programming sorted.

Kidnapped by some psycho killer 'King' of warring chaos wilderland, but you escape, join up with some rebels and wander the wilderland, hunting animals, climbing up radio towers to unlock the map and ..... sound a bit like Farcry 3. Sacred 33
Jan 2, 2015
Its multriplayer fun in a repetitive button mashing 'gauntlet' sort of way. Opening graphics were great. In game graphics are functional. But audio? Was the in game 'adviser' narration done by a breathlessly excited american high school girl? And not in a good way. Your hero/heroine is apparently 'badass' and 'kicks butt'. Meanwhile, the evil boss on the initial level refers to you as 'seeexxxxxaaay' and 'baby cheeks' - when not saying 'mmm mmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!' in a very dubious way. The voice actors are probably fine people, but what they were paid to say is just wron on so many levels. I mean, its like the voice acting ****. And blows. Just, totally, like, **** and blows, dude. At the same time, bro. But if those last few sentences didn't annoy you, you'll probably be fine with it. ;-)

Long Live The Queen5
Jan 1, 2015
OK(ish). Just purchased this for approx £3 on steam. Played for several hours. Its OK. Its a bit like playing a spreadsheet with storyline events that require you to have certain values in your key spreadsheet cells to continue. There is no way of knowing when which cells will be required, so you will 'die' randomly quite often. There are save games so you can time travel back to before your death and start increasing the values in the cells you need to get past the event, but the cells are interlinked and increasing the values you need takes time, so you may not be able to increase them fast enough to continue. Its OK for £3. The spreadsheety gameplay reminds me a bit of 'console game dev' on Android and Democracy on PC -so If you liked those games, you may like The Queen too.

Disappointing. Just purchased this for £3 on steam. Completed it in two attempts and under 15 minutes. By 'completed' I mean I reached the end/credits zone. Not impressed. It's a mildly interesting diversion - but £3 for less than 15 minutes makes it very expensive (not to mention linier and simplistic) entertainment compared to say £40 for 100+ hours on Dragon Age 3. I'm sure there are alternate looping paths through the game, but knowing the ending I'm really not that interested.

Very DarkSouls like. Graphics are very nice. Controls are smooth. Combat moves are very timing/sequence sensitive and unforgiving. There is a token story, limited dialogue and a small 'world' to walk through - but its played out largely as a strainght line wak through set peice combats. Saves are at set points only and a mistake (or real wold distraction) in between save points willl send you back to the last. If you like DarkSouls you'll probably like this.

You want to know everything you need to know about Unity in one easy step? Take a long look at the cover. Its a stock AC 'boyband' image with the ladz striding forward at slighty different angles, hoodies at the ready, eyes furtively averted or staring moodily ahead, one adjusting his sleeve ...... Etc. And the content behind the cover is eveything you'd expect from the boyband image - a manufactured pop mish mash of past hits, other peoples songs ,no cohesion and nothing new. And dong get me started on the bugs, It should have been called AC Boyband Bugfight. Theres a very good reason most places are selling it £20 less than RRP a few days after its much hyped release. Possibly the best multiplier video FPS war game ever. Large maps which are excellently designed. Realistic uniforms, vehicles, weapons, magazine sizes, bullet damage, reload times, balanced player roles .... etc. Artillery, vehicles. Even server admins that ban racists, teammate shooters, cheaters and other sorts of multiplayer game parasites. Best of all, realistic character movement - no mile high jumps or unlimited sprints! If someone runs into open ground jumping up and down, they get shot. COD for grown ups. Brilliant.

Dec 7, 2014
Good game. Played a couple of times (with the first two dlc/expansions installed). Initial impressions are its not a 'hard' game. Its like manipulating a graphical spreadsheet with hidden and time delayed formula linking key cells and trying to get a good balance in the key cells you're most interested in. That's not to say its not fun, if you like that sort of thing. I found it fun. You can 'build' the government you want, 'research' new policies etc ...... Every so often you have to win an election to stay in the game. To win the election you have to have the majority of voters vote for you. All good. BUT. Yo can get assassinated by extremists. OK, fair enough. But I created a liberal paradise with all the policies you'd expect, but with a strong police force and lots of surveillance (to remove organised crime, violent crime etc). I won two elections and was just about to win a third. My police kept warning me the corporates were unhappy with my high tax rates. Fair enough. I had game 'awards' for equality, eco friendly, health care, education etc - then a 'liberal extremist' assassinated me with a bomb. With no warning. Game over. Not sure how realistic that is. Anyway still a fun game.

I don't normally buy games on day of release, but this one I did, so first impressions after about 10 hours play. Its a pretty game, but pretty in the 'shiney plasticy claymation' graphics style so common on the next gen consoles. I dont know if its a next-gen tech thing, but I'd prefer realistic to claymation (or 'bound in flame' style cel-shaded) any day. I'm sure its technically graphically 'better' than last gen. Story is OK. but then I thought DA 1 and 2 were great, so I'm almost a guarenteed DA3 story fan -lots of the characters/nps/location are recognisable which suits me fine. Character classes, skill trees, progression mechanics, combat mechanics are also very familiar to past DA players. There also the companion interaction with dialogue choices prompting the 'x likes/dislikes you more' reactions. Thats great. Lack of player character face/body customisation bugged me. Like 'Bound in flame' its a choice of limited presets - maybe its a next gen 'limited character model' thing. I wanted a human character with white hair - so the presets left me with one with green lips ........... ah well, at least it matches the green magic. A lot of people have bigged up the sidequests. Well so far its the same old 'go there, get this, speak to them' stuff. Theres a bit of sidequest 'build a camp'/spread your influence' for your faction metagame in there too like the army recruitment in the previous dragon age (or camp captures in Skyrim). Overall I'm happy so far.

Bought this in the recent sale for £17. It's okish and a passable filler until Dragon Age, but it's nothing special. Story is ok, graphics are functional (but very borderlands style cell shaded), crafting is ok, skills are themed and jok, combat mechanics are ok. Bosses are quite impressive. On the downside, companion AI is poor and expect to lose them unless you protect them very carefully, very limited npc interaction, very very limited character appearance customisation - if you are male you will have to look like a bulked up 'Gears Of War' stereotype, even if you skill select to play as a stealthy rogue or crafty Mage. Worst of all is the constant gratuitous swearing. It's like witcher 2 and just ends up making you feel like most characters (including yours) are ****.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection2
Nov 16, 2014
So playing a Halo1 CE pillar of autumn flyby cutscene on an xbox one judders? Really? Cutscene audio goes out of sync (or doesn't play at all) with video? Seriously? Master Chief is woken from Cryosleep at the start of HALO 1 CE, looks down over the base of the bed at the operator and "OH NO! its an empty cryo bed! WHERE ARE MY LEGS!" But it must be a cryo hallucination. Master Chief moves as the operator instructs then still does the 'vampire floaty slide'(tm) walk with no visible motion bobble all. Never mind, lets look at multiplayer - whats that XBL message "ongoing server problems, multiplayer restricted". Any 'boners been laughing at PS4's driveclub online restrictions. Right back at you. And this is possibly THE flagship xbone title one year on from console launch!!! Look Halo is a great game, people will buy it just to relive the past and for xbone multiplayer with friends -, but I'm disappointed.

Alien: Isolation8
Oct 13, 2014
Good. After about 8 hours total, heres my impressions of Alien:Isolation. Bottom line is its a worthy Alien game and probably one of the best so far. Its a stealth game, which is great and what I'd expected from the hype. BUT ............... Graphics are OK, not brilliant, but they do the job. But there are annoying glitches that spoil the immersion. If you look down at your feet when walking you look like you're floating rather than walking. Face textures are good, but arm/hand textures are very basic. How much graffiti on the space station walls? And so repeititive - didnt the people have anything better to do than write the same phrases again and again. And Again. Your character 'death' sequence is as basic as your arm/hand graphics. Some may say minimalist, some may say disappointing. The alien is not very slimey. or well animated Audio is good, - but back to graphics - I wish they could have got the lip/voice sync thing together. NPS will talk to you but face areas you are not standing in - how are you supposed to know where to stand? Come on theres even an 'NPC head tracking' patch for Skyrim! One last thing. In the intro/tutorial wait for the other crew to get to the bridge for the briefing before you - or they will never show up! I waited in the bridge for a good 30 minutes wondering what I'd missed, then had to restart the game from scratch. You may look at that list and think, so what and in most FPS it would be so what, but Aliens:Isolation is a survival/horror immersion game, so the little things matter. Here's hoping they get patched.

Fable III9
Aug 8, 2014
Bugged? I loved Fable 1 and 2, so was really looking forward to Fable 3 and jumped at it when it appeared on XBL sale for £5 (I think). But fable 3 is one of those 'one save' games. No going back. So, towards the end game, encountering what I think was a game killing bug was a bit of a downer. In the second phase of the game, you have 'a year' in game time to prepare your kingdom for the climactic battle. I was happily preparing my defences, with the game 'countdown timer' telling me I had 180+ days remaining - then bingo, straight to the the end battle. I 'won' the battle but lost pretty much all my kingdom in the process because my kindoms 'battle chest was in my pocket rather than the castle' and in game terms I was woefuly underprepared. Mechanically I guess it doesn't matter, because I 'won' the game, but psychologically its a real downer particularly with no 'second chance save game'.

Proteus0
Aug 8, 2014
Awful. Silly pastel colour scheme. Jagged, blocky graphics. Terrible electronic ambient musix/fx, Sluggish controls. No story. No interaction. No gameplay. Tiny playing area. This is quite possibly the worst 'game' I have every played. But Proteus is not 'a game'. I liked Journey. I liked TotalMiner, Terraria, DokiDoki ......... I dont have any problem with minimalist, unusual or indie stuff. But Proteus is absolutely awful. Some will say its a miimalist game. Its not. Proteus is no more a minimalist game than a blank piece of papar is a minimalist novel. Proteus was one of the free game on PSN this month (Aug 2014), so I played it for a good hour trying to like it - but frankly I wouldn't bother even for 'free'.

Dragon Age II9

Very, very good. I played dragon age 2 soon after completing the Mass Effect Trilogy and, in my opinion DA2 is every bit as good as Mass Effect. Bioware are prety much masters of story driven RPGs and DA 2 is no exception. Good story, good characters, interesting choices and fun from start to end. Technically the graphics and audio are good - closer to Amalur than Skyrim. As are the movement and combat mechanics. The camera angle is different to the ME series with you looking a bit further away from the characters - but then you're not 'iron sight' aiming firearms.

EDF is unique. Its a squad based scifi b movie 3rd person shooter which you'll either love or hate. AI is bizzare. Missions are repetative. Graphics are OKish, but collision detection is poor, Sound is poor. Voice acting/script is ;so bad its good' - hearing the EDF squads sing their mad songs is surreal. But the action is non stop and, somehow, EDF is fun, lovable and brilliant - at least in multiplayer mode with friends which is how I always play it

Mass Effect 310

I'm playing the Mass Effect series quite a long time after release, but I've just completed the trilogy. Don't listen to the haters. If you liked ME 1 and 2, I think you'll like 3. The story is good with another darkening of the mood. You build your team again and care about them again. The mechanics are good with a return to the weapon customisation of ME1. The follow through from one game to the next (you import your character to the next game) is good. The Sound, music and voice acting is good. The graphics and controller responsiveness are a lot better in ME 3. Admittedly I played with the DLC and the ' extended/alternate ending option', but ME 3 is a classic and right up there with Skyrim as an epic RPG.

I'm playing the Mass Effect series quite a long time after release, but I've just completed the trilogy. ME 2 is a great follow on to ME 1, but has a darker feel to itt. The story is good. You build your team and care about them. The mechanics are good. The follow through from one game to the next (you import your character to the next game) is good. The Sound, music and voice acting is good. The graphics get noticeably better from one game to the next. In ME 2 the locations may feel a bit smaller than ME1, but that fits the tone of the sequel. ME is right up there with Skyrim as an epic RPG.

Dead Island: Riptide6
Jan 28, 2014
I was hoping for better. Like the original dead island. Excellent sound. Great atmosphere. Good graphics. Good sandbox. OK story & quests. But some real immersion killers: 1) You level up, the zombies level up. same as the original dead island. Endgame zombies can kill you just as easily as startgame ones - usually in one or two blows. Not bad in itself. Leveling up is like running to stand still, so why bother with levelling? At the tail end of the game the toughness of some zombies becomes silly - I'm level 50 with a maxed out auto rifle facing a thug' zombie at 20 yards. I have to shoot it in the head 12 times to kill it. WTF! I step through a door the thug was guarding. I step back through the door and the thug zombie has respawned next to me and kills me instantly in one blow. I respawn 20 yards away - but this time with no ammo. Arrrrrrgh frustration!!!!!!!! 2) Internet 'integration. Riptide really wants you online - and not in a good 'left 4 dead' way. It really wants you to sign in via facebook. Why? I got so annoyed I disconnected the PS3 from the net and the game wouldnt start. Often during the game other online players would 'join in' univited and unwanted and troll around breaking the immersion - I couldn't see any way to stop this. A great, but flawed, zombie sandbox.
