Everything Everywhere All at Once9

A truly insane, one-of-a-kind movie, that will make you alternate between laughing and crying (when you're not mouthing "what the f*ck"). Peel away the chaos and it's a film about struggling to find meaning in a universe which can feel meaningless. Your enjoyment of the film hinges on your ability to relate to that core sentiment. If you already find meaning through religion, etc. you will most likely walk away feeling confused and overwhelmed.

Joker6

Was initially excited to see a plausible Joker origin story, but the transition from the build-up to the conclusion was very abrupt and disjointed. The Joker's climactic monologue was a non-sensical jumble of adolescent edgelord talking points with no relation to what came before it. Not a coherent movie, this is a simple person's idea of a masterpiece.

A formulaic jump-scare horror movie that is well executed. Good sound-design, camera work, and performances. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel and the ending feels nonsensical and needlessly bloated, this is still my favorite entry in the "Conjuring cinematic universe"

The Babadook6

One of the most overrated horror movies I've ever seen. Reeks of budget constraints, with a terrible performance from the child actor and cheesy ending. Was very excited to see what the fuss was about, and walked away from the experience disappointed and confused.

Before I Wake5

Not a very good horror movie. The villain and backstory are poorly fleshed out, there's little dread or suspense, the performances are wooden, and the story was poorly resolved. It felt more like a drama about grief with a few jump scares thrown in, than anything resembling true horror

Easily the most pretentious movie I've seen this year. It took me four 'sessions' to finish because of how bored I was throughout. At least visually, it is an artistically fulfilling experience, but the structure and pacing make this a deeply tedious viewing experience, with little payoff. I give it a '7' only because it leaves you thinking, but on the merits of the film as entertainment, 6 or below is more accurate.

Overall, not bad. Many criticisms the critics brought up are valid. It's long, tonally uneven, some of the comic bits fall flat, etc. I feel like it had great potential to either be a hilarious comedy or a touching drama, but instead, it feels like two different movies awkwardly sewn together, instead of a seamless, singular whole; the comedic elements undermine the dramatic scenes, and vice versa. If you walk in the theater from a critical standpoint, you'll probably be left feeling disappointed, but if you approach it from a more casual standpoint, you'll find lots to enjoy. While the movie intermittently made me laugh and feel, it could have easily been a much better film if it committed to either comedy or drama. Also, they spoil the ending of Lost, so I'm subtracting an additional point off of my score. Yes, some of us still haven't finished watching that show.

Terrific movie. There were plenty of laughs for both the adults and the children present, and gamers will be thrilled to see all of their favorite childhood mascots well represented. I should mention though, that you don't have to be a gamer to enjoy the movie. After all, its real strength isn't the laughs or wacky characters, it's the strong story, which oozes heart and class. It was far more emotionally involved than I was expecting, and received a loud applause at the theater I saw it at. Check it out.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol7

Didn't regret seeing this movie. I've got my complaints, of course. Mysterious analyst Brandt's (Jeremy Renner) dramatic side-story is never fully realized, the plot feels half-baked at times, and Paula Patton's acting is lackluster. Also, one can't help but wonder how an aging physicist can keep up with a young special agent physically. Still though, this being an action movie, it fails or succeeds based on the merit of said action sequences and they deliver in spades. From a chase scene in the middle of a sandstorm to a fight in an automotive production facility, the viewer gets the sense that the filmmakers made a serious effort to innovate. Rather than seeking to impress the viewer based on the quantity of explosions on the screen at any given moment (like this year's godawful Transformers movie), they instead do so by building tension and maintaining a bizzarre sense of plausibility. There are other good things about this movie, like the colorful locales and effective comic relief, but those elements live to serve the effective action sequences. If you'd like to shut your brain off for an hour and a half and enjoy some of the best original action sequences produced in years, then this film would be a solid investment. If you take yourself too seriously, maybe watch something else.

Overrated. While the soundtrack and cinematography were great, the dialogue, particularly between the male and female leads, was consistently awkward and wooden. It also had way too many excessively artsy shots of Gosling looking contemplative. Plot-wise, it said and accomplished little. The movie really shines during its driving sequences, and in a few of the action sequences. Overall, it's not bad, but it's not the amazing movie some of the professional critics made it out to be.

A very enjoyable mix of campy suspense, action, and humor. Great performances all around, with the highlight being Colin Farrell as Jerry the vampire. My friends and I loved it. Give it a watch, it might surprise you.
