The Shannara Chronicles: Season 1

Having read half of Brooks' books, this series equally disappoints as being plodding if not borderline boring. Wooden characters despite some great attempts by the actors are characteristic of Brooks' interesting plot lines, but he could not deliver timely, sharp development either in his books or this series. And what is the purpose of having a cliffhanger at the end when everyone who has read his books that Eretria will marry Wil and spawn a new generation, which will be the central characters of book two in the Shannara trilogy? If the "titillating" love scenes had been cut out, there would have been plenty of time to rescue Eretria, be present at their marriage, and kick-off a second monotonous season with two half-/quarter-/eighth Elf children wrestling mostly with their inner demons.

To be honest, I do not like the character Wes Lawrence. In fact, I like his boss the Secretary of whatever (defense?) better. Now that eleven episodes are in the can, I am getting a kick that he is finally getting his comeuppance. Of course, I kind of felt strongly that his daughter was going to be ground zero. I mean, all the clues were there. On the acting side, it is fair. There is no over-acting, although some of Claire's (Lily Rabe) facial expressions are a little over the top. But Derek Webster takes the cake in the category "Did you ever go to acting school or have any training at all?" The big question is: should there be a Season 2? 1. Based on the haphazard plot structure of Season 1, I would be inclined to ask the simple question of why? I mean, I have seen other One-Season wonders with better plots, better acting, and better structures disappear off the media map. 2. If Drill wins, then game over. Same with if the humans win. Game over, and don't come back. Does it sound like I'm not in favor of Season 2? I answer with this question: If Ray Bradbury thought that his short story needed an encore, wouldn't he have written it?

Billy Crystal's comedy has always been difficult to digest, if not understand. He is kind of a Jack Benny of my era. His newest entree into television is flat, not funny. The first episode was more about making faces. Jack Benny had Rochester as his foil; Josh Gad is no foil. I would suppose that Billy is trying a version of The Office, but at least in that series there was one or two smiles. With The Comedians, no smiles. But I promised to watch at least three episodes before making a decision as to add this series to my collection. At present, the vote is a strong NOT.
