This was the worst film I have ever seen. And just when you think, wow, this couldn’t possibly get any worse… it does. I honestly don’t understand how this has a score over 50. It’s causing me to seriously question the validity of the entire film rating system. Arguably the worst movie of all time. Bravo.

I loved the original and was so excited for this… unfortunately it plays like it was written by committee of studio execs and the hacks that do their bidding instead of a visionary writer who could channel McDowell’s original and have the balls to say no to bad ideas. So many unnecessary subplots and stupid vignettes with no service to the story. Zero joy or satisfaction from any of it in the end. The only thing that saves the film is the sheer brilliance of Keaton… Ryder is sadly wasted in a character burdened by CPTSD that bears little resemblance to the iron-willed Lydia of her teen angst. Catherine O’Hara and Jenna Ortega are also wonderful. Just wish they ALL had a better script to do them justice.

I am absolutely shocked that the ratings for this, both critic and user, are so abysmally low… I am a complete snob and hate everything, but I thought this was fantastic. I was laughing the entire time and thought the performances were awesome. Cage was inspired and on point. Hoult was a breakout bonafide star. Awkwafina, who usually irritates the hell out of me, was earnest and stunningly compelling. Most impressive was Ben Schwartz, who surprisingly embodied an actual character — most of the tome — that wasn’t himself. Sure, the gore was completely over the top and, yes, I’ve been in therapy for narcissistic abuse… but never you mind that. This was the most enjoyable film I’d seen in theaters all year. Loved it.
