Smirk

This is watchable pap. Watchable because the cast is pretty and the film is short (90 mins). Otherwise, it is predictable with absolutely nothing surprising or even clever about the love story or courtroom drama. The ending itself will leave you a little unsatisfied.

I can see that they were trying to cash in on the whole "Crazy Rich Asians" thing with two Asian leads and somewhat of an Asian theme, they missed the whole Asian culture and backdrop. Overall, it bumbles along as a very predictable nothingness: nothing too great, just a few small touching moments, and nothing to write home about. My problem with this is that Marcus has absolutely no redeeming qualities except the boy who made her laugh and who's family looked after her. That's not enough for me, even with the "power of love". I won't be watching this again, not even if there's nothing else on.

I can see that the writers tried really hard to capture the whimsy of Winnie the Pooh and friends, especially with a story about returning to you childhood and working out what's important in life (shh... it's you family). Somehow, however, Christopher Robin fails, both in whimsy and in a sweet story. Somehow, there is too much of Pooh, the story is predictable and corny. I am a fan of Ewan MacGregor, and even enjoyed his Alec Guinness impression, but his posh English accent seems strained at times, as was his acting. I am also a fan of Hayley Atwell, but she had very little to do in this film, and sadly, the show wasn't stolen by young Bronte Carmichael. Sadly, this film didn't do it for me.

Whilst I'm glad to see DC trying to take a lighter and more fun-loving tone, I'm not surprised that Whedon has distanced itself from this turkey. It even lacks Snyder's normally stunning visuals to redeem it. The comedy timing is all off, the characters aren't relatable and the CGI is just awful.

I went into the movie hoping, but not expecting. Many of the nuances of the film will be lost on those who haven't seen Alien, but unlike Alien, this is not a "horror/ shocker" film. It is a proper science fiction film with a bit of the Alien-style shocking scenes. Unlike others, I believe a true Sci-Fi fan will love the questions posed in Alien being answered here, especially after so many years of mystery (besides that's what makes Serenity so great). Whilst Noomi Rapace (lead female role) isn't as strong a character as Sigourney Weaver, this film still has beautiful touches of Ridley Scott that made Alien and Blade Runner so great. This won't go down as a classic in the same way those films did (primarily because of the cult status and high expectations), but it is a great prequel. I think those who are knocking it should go back and watch Alien and Blade Runner. Those similarly slow paced and atmospheric; something we really aren't used to in Sci-Fi films nowadays (but just another element of what made those films great).

Great cinematography, great scenes, set, casting, battle scenes, special effects.... all spoilt by one thing: Kirsten Stewart! OK, there are a few flaw in the plot, like how someone who has been imprisoned between the age of about 10 to 18 can ride and fight, but I suppose it does explain some of her complete lack of ability to act and speak like a normal person. What a shame from an otherwise excellent movie.
