I can not express how utterly disappointed I am with this game. It is a complete waste of time. First of all, it's far too easy to die and there's really no reward for staying alive except to circumvent respawning in some random location with an indeterminate amount of progress lost. It is literally impossible to figure out how much progress you've lost short of referencing how much ammo you have when your last save loads compared to how much you had before you died. Second, the enemy AI is horrible. You can shoot them with a silenced rifle from 1000 yards and they will, in most cases, establish your exact position immediately. Third, after you upgrade all your bags from animal hides, animals cease to have a purpose other than ambushing you while you're trying to sneak up on the enemy. Fourth, I've actually lost missions and had to load a previous save because my AI controlled "allies" randomly showed up and killed the person I was supposed to assassinate. Fifth, there is only one active quest at a time. You are never allowed to pursue more than one goal at any given time and despite supposed "updates" the game will remind you of your current mission objective with a huge pop-up every two minutes. The list goes on and on. But these aren't minor things. These are game-breaking flaws that completely ruin the experience. It's like this game was play-tested, but never fun-tested.

Total War Battles: SHOGUN

For the money ($1.50 on Steam sale) this is a fun game with great art and solid voice acting. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't the turn-based game that I was expecting, but the core gameplay mechanic (build resources and recruit troops) is strong. I wish they had upgraded some feature when moving from touchpad to PC, specifically the fact that there are no interactive menus and that maps are all very small. Additionally, there are a few "puzzle" missions where you have to build structures, but you only have a limited amount of space and several restrictions. My biggest frustration with the game was that the puzzle missions were tedious and took me longer than any single battle. Nothing about this game really feels epic, but if you like the Waring States Era and are looking for some casual gaming, I highly recommend you try Total War Battles: SHOGUN.

A classic Turn-Based game on a modern console! This game is perfect for anyone looking to pick up a little turn-based play. The visual themes, music selection, and game play mechanics are all solid. The company that made this game must have been bought up and dissolved, because I can't believe they never released a new Vandal Hearts.

SimCity 2000 was a good game because it was simple and intuitive. SimCity 4 is neither of those. The only way I can describe it is to say that it is no longer the game you play when you want to relax and see your plans spring to life before your eyes. Even the controls are difficult to figure out as the game has seemly 100 quick keys and no reference chart. If you want to spend hours clicking through menus just to undo one mistake, then this is the game for you. I'd recommend dusting off a copy of SimCity 2000.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction
5
User ScoreShinigurai
Jul 20, 2012
What could have been a great game is ruined by stiff mechanics and poor controls. For example, if you are crouched next to an enemy and press the melee key, nothing happens. You just sit there like an idiot. You have to press the crouch key first to stand yourself up and THEN press the melee key. This alone will cause you to fail more missions than anything else, because it will throw off your timing. Another great example is the contextual "use" key. If you're standing next to a climbable ledge and there is a weapon on the ground that you want to pick up, you have to sit there for two minutes and rotate the camera just right until the weapon is highlighted instead of the ledge. It is very disappointing how poorly Splinter Cell: Conviction was executed, because it obvious has enormous potential.

A classic top-down shooter following in the footsteps of great games like Crimsonland. Mobs of zombies shuffle toward you from every direction and you blow them to pieces with an arsenal of unique weapons and power-ups. The only thing that could have added to the replay value of this game would be persistent leveling, but it's hardly missed. A great game for such a rarely used genre!

Could have been a good game if the developers had just opened their "do's and don't" manual for game programming. There are sooooo many little problems with this game that they add up to make it unplayable. You can't bind more than mouse left/middle/right even though there are 4 specialty actions in the game. The sound effects volume is ridiculously low (if you turn up your speakers, don't forget to turn them down or you will BLOW THEM OUT). The game required me to roll back C++ to a previous version, which then effected several other games. The list goes on, but you get the point. This game could have easily been good with a little polish and some common sense. If you want a good top-down shooter try "Nation Red" or "Crimsonland"

35 gigs of harddrive space required. That's all that needs to be said. Purchased through Steam and downloaded on a 25mbps connection took 3 full days to install, because Steam's download service is so slow (I wasn't even using my bandwidth for anything else). For 35 gigs of space this should have been the best game ever - it wasn't.

I played this game all the way through twice and loved it! The addition of Sandbox Mode is such a huge improvement! It is something that the Dead Rising series should have had from the start and in a game where exploration is rewarded, but time is limited Sandbox Mode is perfect! I've read a lot of reviews that say "killing zombies gets old," and that's why this mix of Story and Sandbox is so great. The level up, inventory, and skills systems are all well executed. The story is gritty without taking itself too seriously and the main characters are very interesting. My only complaint is that sometimes actions take a little too long to perform, which can mess up your timing in tense situations. If you haven't played Dead Rising 2 or always wanted to explore Fortune City without restrictions I highly recommend this game.

This game is a blast! For the money (currently $20) it is absolutely worth a play-through. It's entertaining, not complicated, looks good, plays well. I like the setting and the characters, but didn't pay too much attention to the storyline. The action sequences are fast-paced, but if you like to take your time with shooters just lower the difficulty. The controls can be a little sketchy when you're in the menus and a Windows Live account is required, but I didn't find either of those to be a deal breaker. If you're looking for a fun shooter that you don't have to take seriously, look no further than Bulletstorm.

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013
5
User ScoreShinigurai

The only redeeming quality is the price-tag. When Stainless Games first started advertising this game the big highlight was all of the improvements from Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. Unfortunately, most of them didn't make it into the finished product. Bugs and glitches still run rampant. Combat with more than 4 creatures is still a nightmare (despite screenshots seen in advertisements). You can not edit the amount of land in a deck, which makes certain decks unbalanced. The decks are incredibly bland with uninteresting themes and poor selections of cards. The Planeschase gamemode is interesting until it does something that completely changes the flow of the game. When this happens the game sits there for 10 minutes while all the effects resolve and there is nothing to do but wait while the timer ticks off each one. The list goes on, but you get the idea. All in all it seems that Stainless Games did not learn from their mistakes, nor did they listen to the players. After a second failure I don't think Wizards of the Coast will license Stainless Games to make another Magic game. If you want new decks and new game modes the $10 price-tag might draw you in, but the rule of thumb seems to be that if it's made by Stainless Games then it's going to be poor quality.

I think this game has such a high User Score because too many players are overly loyal to the series and unwilling to admit that this is a bad game. After playing the game for several hours it feels more like a chore than a delight. Unresponsive controls, terrible camera angles, worthless auto-aim, and awful boss fights. That pretty much sums it up. You will spend more time in loading screens then actually playing the game because you will fall to your death so often due to poor camera angles or extreme camera zoom. Often the hitting a button will result in an action delay just long enough to make you mistime your jump or grab and you will end up back at the beginning of whatever climbing puzzle you were on. The enemies often move so fast that you cannot get away and once they are on top of you the auto-aim system refuses to target them. Boss fights are overly complicated and generally one mistake will cause you to become trapped against a wall or in a corner where you will be killed. Overall this game is just frustrating. If there were no enemies and falling from a great height didn't kill you then this would be a wonderful adventure/puzzle solver, but it isn't. The game tries to do too much without giving the player any room for mistakes. Unless you enjoy frustration, save your money.

Play the demo first! This game is literally so dry and boring that a five minute demo will simulate the entire experience. There are two mechanics to this game (jumping and moving objects) and they are so repetitive that the game almost plays itself. Sure, the use of a physics engine adds a little something to the game, but it's almost entirely aesthetic. I will say that the artistic style is unique and the choice of having only ambient sound is interesting, but with no story to speak of the game simply isn't entertaining for more than twenty or thirty minutes.

Save your money. All Zombies Must Die isn't a BAD game, it simply isn't a good one either. As many reviewers have said, it is very repetitive and offers minimal plot development. You can level characters and increase their stats, but the increases are almost indiscernible. The crafting system is a joke with a handful of base weapons and 6 elemental upgrades which are the same for each weapon. Honestly, a price tag of $5 or less would have been more appropriate for this game.

Simply put, this game fails to meet the expectations it sets for itself. After 6 hours of gameplay the very basic elements of the game aren't rewarding and most aren't even explained. First of all, upon starting the game you are plunged into "training" with no back-story or character reference. During "training" you're given tasks to do, but no real explanation on what your units do, what enemy units can do, or anything regarding what your character can do. Second, as soon as you enter the world you will find an alarming number of enemies who are simply too powerful to defeat. Even worse, there are enemies who fly the banner of your kingdom and nothing indicates that they are enemies until you're too close to avoid combat with these insanely high level assailants. The map is "nice" looking, but frustratingly difficult to navigate. Furthermore, enemies seem to have no boundaries. They will chase you across the entire map and when they catch you the only way to exit combat is to leave your entire army to die, which forces you to start over from nothing. Even the combat system feels very limited. During combat the abilities and powers of your troops aren't easy to reference and everything except the number of enemy troops seems to be hidden. The enemy will often use powers that "scare" your troops, causing you lose control of them for several turns, which is the ultimate role-playing no-no. And even your own character feels like a stranger to you, as he never actually participates in battle. I really, really wanted to like this game, but so many things about it are just sub-par. It's worse than unpolished - it feels like the designers simply didn't put any thought into this game.

Interesting idea, disappointing result. I was ecstatic when I read that this game was "turn-based." I thought it would like a traditional turn-based RPG. No. You select weapons and point them downrange, then in real-time your characters shoot while enemies advance, leaving you to strafe up and down the screen to avoid incoming fire. As you strafe, your line of fire moves with you. This might be ok if you could time when your character fires, but between dodging incoming fire and trying to keep track of moving enemies there is simply more luck involved in this game than strategy.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

User ScoreShinigurai
Aug 24, 2011
To put it simply, this game is nothing special. Uninspired and surprisingly linear, Human Revolution fails to live up to the Deus Ex name. This game is a copy/paste of the dozens of cover-shooting "RPGs" already on the market. In fact, it could arguably be a direct copy of Mass Effect 2 with the added elements of climbing ladders and crawling through vents. That is not a compliment. The shooting is stiff, the graphics are dated, the quests are glitched, and some of the augmentation upgrades are practically necessary if you want to experience anything resembling nonlinear gameplay. Hacking is a perfect example of this. It's used everywhere for almost everything. Be prepared to fully upgrade the hacking augmentation before doing anything else (unless you just want to run from cover to cover shooting people until you reach the end of the level). Overall the game leaves an impression of poor planning and stale mechanics.

Underwhelming and frustrating. Dark Messiah is another example of what a game COULD have been. With some refinement, skill balancing, and a little more creativity this game might have been enjoyable. Instead it remains a journey into mediocrity. The levels are uninspired with the same tricks of cutting a rope to drop a box on an enemy, kicking them into spikes, or just plain slashing at them halfheartedly. Blocking attacks is clunky and there is way to dodge short of running away. Ranged combat is useless due to the unbelievably low damage that arrows inflict. Spell casting is also a farce. Spells are not powerful and use up at least half of your mana, leaving you very vulnerable for several minutes while you recharge. If you buy the game on sale and go into it with low expectations you'll probably get your money's worth. All in all, the game takes far too long to get to the interesting parts.

An absolute failure right out of the gate. The flaws in this game were so many and so immediately apparent that after 20 minutes of "play" I needed a break. For starters, the user can't customize the controls. This may not be a huge concession for most players, but in the year 2011 it astonishes me that developers still can't grasp the most basic of needs. It isn't hard to program customizable controls and almost every user will want to change at least one aspect of a control scheme. In a complicated strategy game the last thing a user should have to do is hunt for the proper key. Not to mention the fact that there is no reference for the control scheme, which brings me to my next point. The tutorial system is horrible. Not only does it baby the user with overly simplified instructions, it goes so far as to assume that the user is a moron and needs to be told that "doubling clicking" means "to click the mouse button twice in rapid succession." The worst part? You can't skip ANY parts of the tutorial. It isn't broken down by chapters or subjects and there is no way to skip forward or backward. You have to do everything step-by-step and if you want to review something you just did you have to start the entire tutorial over. This includes trying to figure out the how the computer interprets your commands. Trying to make the AI do one specific thing? Run through the entire tutorial and pay extremely close attention, because if you miss it you'll be doing it all over again. Finally, there's the AI. Absolutely horrible. No matter what you do your team will never spot the enemy first. In fact the enemy AI will often avoid your line of sight as if by some magical psychic power. Set up the perfect trap? The enemy will never go near that section of the map. What's worse, the game starts you out with short range guns. Good luck trying to get within the required twenty feet to actually shoot at an enemy. This game is frustration incarnate. I will admit that the premiss behind the game is fantastic. However the execution is so poor that the most fun you'll have with this game is uninstalling it while you scream at your monitor. Don't waste your time or your money.
