Dracula (2020): Season 12
Jan 12, 2020
Boy, this was a three part limited series, and it went from a promising first episode to a complete crapfest by the third. Ugh, so utterly disappointing. What could have been a good classic tale of Gothic horror comes totally undone by the final act. It's like two different TV shows were mashed together halfway. What a waste.

The Witcher: Season 13
Dec 27, 2019
The production values are good, and Henry Cavill is a decent actor, but the story ****. The Bard is the most annoying character on TV and he sings in each episode? Awful. Like a poor man's version of Game of Thrones.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Season 21
Nov 19, 2019
A stodgy rehash of the Harrison Ford movie Clear and Present Danger. The writers throw out any sort of continuity and logic by getting rid of Jack Ryan's love interest from last season (she's not even mentioned) and ignoring the political realities of Venezuela- it seems they mistook that country with Colombia when writing this. Horrible. Skip it.

Das Boot (2019): Season 14
Jun 27, 2019
What could have been a good drama about German u-Boat crews devolves into terrorists and PC Germans. It seems both the protagonists (brother and sister) all end up as **** through a combination of bad writing and poor plotting. Every WW2 cliche you could think of ends up in this show. Silly

Manhunt (2017)6
Jun 17, 2019
Paul Bettany is excellent as the Unabomber and the show is pretty thorough in regards to details of the manhunt. The problem is that the lead is a fictional character, and Sam Worthington is a horrible actor- he just mumbles his lines. Fair though not great.

Waco8
Jun 17, 2019
A searing TV miniseries about the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. David Koresh is treated with much more sympathy than in previous versions. The FBI and the ATF using military tactics against civilians is what ignited many militias and separatists groups, which led to the Oklahoma City Bombing. Well made and worth a watch.

Knightfall0
May 9, 2019
Not historically accurate at all. Fight sequences ridiculous- one stab of a sword goes right through solid plate armor? Really? And terrible acting too. Avoid.

The Son5
May 9, 2019
Something isnt right about this whole premise, if Brosnan's character was taken in by Indians at the age of 13 in 1849, and then it time jumps to the present setting of the show in 1915, his character would have been 79 years old. It's sort of like an updated version of the movie Giant, but missing the charisma of James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and even Rock Hudson, and replaces them with more violence.

The Passage6
May 4, 2019
Ive read the first two books of Justin Cronin's apocalyptic vampire trilogy, and this is a fair (okay, but not great) adaptation of it. There are major changes overall, like the main character of Amy, who's ethnicity and age have been changed- in the book she's just a little blond girl of 6, very much a child with no personality- yet in the series she's a streetwise 10 year old and I guess it works better since she is a stronger character in it. The addition of the dream sequences is also a big change from the book. Season 1 in fact just really covers the first half of book 1, which starts the apocalypse. Everything is explained beforehand, and the main baddie is already introduced here (he doesnt appear in person or is even identified until book 3, so they mixed up a lot of plots form all three books). The actress who plays Amy is in fact the best actor in the whole series. Wolgast (who is played by Zack from Saved by the Bell) is pretty lousy (he still acts the same even after he got shot in one episode), as is the other adults in the show. All in all, a "passable" adaptation I guess.

The Umbrella Academy: Season 15
Mar 17, 2019
There's some interesting characters and a nice twist to the tired superhero genre, but in the end it's way too slow and convoluted. It focuses too much on the more boring protagonists, and the plot lurches from the satirical to the ridiculous. It's like the X-Men meets Jimmy Neutron. The ending is also a major letdown.

I Am The Night: Season 14
Mar 17, 2019
Although the production values are good and really transports you into 1960's Los Angeles, the plot is slow and schizophrenic- it waffles between being a melodrama **** coming of age at a time of racism and dark family secrets before suddenly switching back and forth into a murder mystery with the backdrop of a corrupt and decadent city. The ending is also a major letdown and even anticlimactic. A valiant effort, but a mess.

True Detective: Season 35
Mar 5, 2019
Well, it's better than season 2, but nowhere near as good as the groundbreaking season 1. What would have been a good story becomes mired in the constant flashbacks and time jumps from the distant past to the present day. It kills any momentum that's built up by the scenes. It would have worked better with just a standard narrative.

The Haunting of Hill House: Season 12
Oct 21, 2018
Piss poor horror TV show based on the classic story by Shirley Jackson. It seems the producers completely missed the point of the book, which was really not about a haunted house, but rather a creepy story about twisted people. What made Jackson's book so scary was because it hinted at the horror, it never fully showed it. This version has too many flashbacks that muddles the story, plus all the characters are unsympathetic. Slow and even boring at times- plus the frequent encounters with the ghosts are repetitive. The book is a million times better- if you want a good horror story, read it instead of watching it.

The Man in the High Castle: Season 38
Oct 12, 2018
Dark, depressing, but amazingly well done adaptation of the PKD novel. Season 3 continues its breakneck pace of complex plots and characters as the stakes get higher. The immersion is breathtaking as the whole show actually transports you into a complete alternate universe where the Axis powers won the war. As usual its the characters that carry the show. John Smith is the best of these, a complex man who is truly evil, yet somehow has that spark of redemption due to his devotion to his not so perfect family, and could be the key to the whole story (assuming he survives). Robert Childan, who normally serves as comedic catharsis to such a depressing show actually takes on a dark turn which I hope will not last. Juliana serves as the main protagonist, yet she is somewhat standard fare compared to the other, more complex characters- she needs to get more interesting, hopefully in the next season. All in all, well done.

Condor: Season 10
Sep 9, 2018
Terrible adaptation of the Robert Redford/Faye Dunaway movie. In this iteration there is no mystery- the bad guys are revealed within the first episode and everything's been dumbed down. The reason why the movie version was so compelling was because he had no idea why he was being hunted, and the audience went along his journey to find out why. Here, everything is spoon fed in advance, and its so silly that you can't help but laugh at the absurdities as to why. The dialogue is atrocious- everybody says Joe Turner isn't "kinetically qualified" to escape a very awkward assassination attempt, and the main character has even less personality than in the movie version. Kinetically qualified? WTF? Even the bad guys are just so cliched, incompetent, and psychopathic they lack any style or substance whatsoever. Skip this.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Season 15
Sep 2, 2018
The production values are nice, but it's the usual US versus terrorists all over again. Jack Ryan is a big old boring boy scout, and all the Muslim males are terrorists, while their women are treated like slaves. Nothing new.

Westworld: Season 25
Jul 7, 2018
I really want to like this show, but there are no characters to root for. The series is well made with good production values, storylines, and acting, but its hard to sympathize with anybody. The robots are supposed to be the good guys, but since they're indestructible, they're never in any danger. The humans are dumber than a bunch of rocks (they don't use cover when fighting, and they always get outsmarted) and greedy, so it's hard to side with them either. The only interesting character is Ed Harris's man in black, but he is too sadistic and uncaring to be likable.

Billions: Season 34
Jul 7, 2018
This show would have been great, but the major weakness is the wife of the US attorney also happens to be the psychiatrist for Axelrod's company, and both men are willing to do anything to keep her happy. This means that the status quo continues and nothing ever changes. What could have been a no-holds barred fight to the finish becomes meaningless.
