Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Amazing game and incredible port. Tons of content in the base game with the season 1 pass included. I would say it’s worth it, even at its regular price. This is hands down my favourite zombie game on switch (so much better than World War Z) and a good improvement and expansion of Zombie Army Trilogy. Even though basically no one is talking about this game, it has a healthy little switch community of active players. The online play works extremely well, even if the small delay between performing an action online and it being registered in the game is annoying. That’s Nintendo’s fault though with the **** wifi they put in the switch. If I had to make one complaint about this game, it’s that there is way too much leveling up and grinding, particularly for weapon upgrades, to the point where it takes away from the actual gameplay. It’s hard for me to enjoy the gameplay for what it is when all I can think about is headshotting 50 armoured giants to get upgrade my rifle. I’m sure some might enjoy these kinds of upgrading mechanics, but it’s far too grindy for me. Either way, this game has a lot of longevity, and I have no doubt it’s going to end up being one of my most played switch games. Other than the grindy game mechanics, my biggest complaint for the game its super overpriced and prevailent DLC. Season passes 2 and 3 are 30 dollars each. For 3 maps a pop and a handful of weapons and character skins, that’s fundamentally not worth it, compared to the base game (with season pass 1) for 50 dollars that has 12 maps, 11 horde mode maps, and an already decent amount of weapons and characters. Each season pass, for the amount of content they have, shouldn’t be more than 15 dollars, and even that is a stretch. The game won’t let you forget that you have DLC to buy either. The content you’re “missing out on” is plastered all over the games menus, with a big ever present “BUY NOW” button always within reach. Very scummy business practices. You could say it’s better than gatcha mechanics and loot boxes (it is), but I don’t think this super overpriced DLC should be defended in any capacity. To get the “full game” you’d have to pay $105. Too much. If this review seems negative that is because I’m only focusing on the two aspects of the game I didn’t like. Everything else that’s great about it goes without saying. If you like mindless zombie killing online with friends, ZA4 is a no brainer.

I'd give it a 9, but unfortunately Rogue lacks the polish of Black Flag and has lots of glitches/hangups. It's a shame, because after playing through Rogue I can confidently say I legitimately enjoy it more than Black Flag. Even if I don't like the story as much, gameplay wise Rogue is a huge improvement over Black Flag. It's a criminally underlooked AC game.

Destroy All Humans!

It's just okay. I loved Destroy all Humans on my original Xbox way back in the day, and this remake IMO is really great on the other consoles, but there are downsides on switch. Surprisingly it runs relatively well all things considered (sticks to 30fps most of the time) at a reasonably good resolution most of the time, but the game made some serious sacrifices to get to this point. Firstly, there is a serious problem with textures not loading properly, particularly in cutscenes, which can be very distracting. There's also quite a lot of pop-in, and what appears to be the lowest resolution ambient occlusion ever put to screen which can make the visuals look really muddy and strange (I don't understand why they didn't remove ambient occlusion entirely). The physics on the switch version are also kind of broken. If you pick up an enemy and throw them at the ground right in front of you or at a nearby building more often then not the NPC will completely spaz and glitch out, getting stick in buildings and that sort of thing. Other times when I threw objects at NPC's they wouldn't even react or take damage. A lot of the weapon animations are bugged as well. When you use the anal probe the animation gets pretty laggy at the end, and when you're in the saucer incoming bullets appear to phase in and out of existence with super jittery movement, making dodging them pretty frustrating. If you're more of a casual player who doesn't pay as much attention to the smaller details in games you may not notice these issues so much, but for me, all these problems really added up and really took me out of a lot of the experience. All things considered I'd probably give this port a 6.5/10 but since metacritic made me choose it's more of a 6 than a 7 to me. It's a real shame. This game holds a special place in my heart and the remake is otherwise great. In this day and age with so many games full of microtransactions, and large, aimless, bloated open worlds, the simple structure, gameplay, and story set in a well realized world with a runtime that doesn't overstay its welcome is incredibly refreshing. The short mission structure and casual nature of the game would also make it great for portable play if it didn't have these issues. I really got the sense the devs did everything they could to make the performance and resolution of this port decent, but at the end of the day I think they made too many sacrifices. As with pretty much every 8th gen switch port, just because you can port it, doesn't mean you should. Some of these issues could be fixed with updates but I doubt it would make a night and day difference. Get it on another platform if you have the chance, it's worth it. As a side note I haven't experienced any crashes during my playtime as some other reviewers have pointed out.

Lonely Mountains: Downhill

This is an impeccably designed game and one of the best skill based/racing games I have ever played, hands down. That being said, this is definitely not a game for everyone, which is clearly reflected in the mixed user scores. As an aside, to me at least, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Why we have to live in a time where in order for a game to be considered "good" it has to have universal appeal is beyond me. Not every game has to be some hand-holdy semi to fully open world loot based action RPG. Anyways, in order to get the most out of this game, you have to be at least somewhat interested in replaying levels to improve on your best times, and have a willingness to find new shortcuts and secret routes. I'm someone who isn't normally into replaying levels and memorizing levels (especially so), but this was a challenge I welcomed in lonely mountains, likely due to the lack of any particular guidance or markers and the possibility of shortcuts, many of which aren't even specifically laid out by the level, to shave off precious second. As someone who has spent a lot of their life skiing and in the mountains, this game NAILS that perfect balance of feeling in control but also being at the mercy of your environment. Pulling **** run in Lonely Mountains is one of the most satisfying experiences I have ever had in gaming. This game is an absolute audiovisual delight too. The relaxing sounds of nature and simple visuals serve as a great contrast to the difficult twitchy gameplay, and in spite of the challenge I found this game to be quite relaxing. One of the best things about the branching levels in this game is how it essentially lets you play each level at your own pace. You CAN have a hyper obsession over level memorization, always wanting to improve your times, but sticking to the trails and going at your own pace is also incredibly engrossing in a sort of cathartic and relaxing way. While finding the best routes and getting the best times requires memorization, following the marked trail to completion does not require much memorization. I think its this fact and the open endedness of the levels that made me enjoy the level memorization metagame within Lonely Mountains, when level memorization is a trope in game design I typically don't like at all. This game is a masterclass in game design and I'm tempted to give it a 10/10, but some **** with the performance on switch bring it down. Specifically, while it was quite rare, from time to time the games visuals would freeze for a few seconds while the action kept going behind the scenes, and in a game like this that demands constant attention, when this happened it would more often than not lead to a crash. Very frustrating and unfair. I should stress though, this is a rare occurrence. Long story short, if you think this is a bad game, you either just **** at it, or its not for you (alright, that's probably not entirely true). Anyways, Ii this game seems remotely appealing to you, I really think it is worth trying out. Thankfully, there is a demo out now for those who are curious.

Who would have thought PvZ would be my favorite shooter on switch? Super fun hero type shooter with incredible animations and feel. The game can seem overwhelming at first, but when you get accustomed to it, it's incredibly fun. Super recommend. Also, they took out absolutely all of the microtransactions in this game. Yes. No microtransactions. And you can fu)y play it offline. Awesome.

Utterly amazing game, but not on switch. The frame rate can get VERY choppy at times, the visuals are incredibly muddy, and to top it off, it's plagued by input lag. It's a real shame for an otherwise fantastic game. If Switch is your only way of playing Apex, you may find it acceptable, but you'd be far better off playing anywhere else. Without the performance, visual, or control problems, it would be a 9/10 or 10/10 for me. Definitely my favorite battle royale game.

You all are crazy. This looks awful. Yes, I get it. It's "so amazing" that doom eternal is on switch. But, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. This entire game is an excercise in what kind of resolutions are acceptable. I can't express enough how utterly blurry this game is, and I'm honestly not sure if I've ever played a game where it is THIS hard to make out critical objects on screen, be enemies platforms, or anything really. While playing the game on TV mode is unpleasant, showcasing the incredible lengths panic button went to cut down the visuals to make this game run, it's still playable for the most part. Handheld mode, though, is a completely different different story. I've heard reports that resultions in handheld can get down to 360p and let me tell you that happens a lot, and it doesn't even always happen during intense gameplay. And this isn't your grandpa's 360p on his Nintendo 64 back in the day, with simple geometry and bright colors. This is so much worse. Not only is the resolution low, but all of the blurring, antialiasing and other filters panic button has applied to the game render the visuals into a soupy and muddy mess. I finally understood what life must be like for my pet lizard, who apparently only sees objects well when they're in motion. Nintendo 3DS games, at 240p, are more playable and defined than Doom Eternal on switch in handheld. It's not just that it's ugly, you can't even play the game properly. While yes, its impressive the game runs at 30fps pretty solidly most of the time, what's the point when you can't even see properly? I absolutely can't recommend this game. Not in its current state. You might **** by if you're just playing in TV mode, but not handheld. And if the game looks this poor in handheld mode, what is even the point of owning it on the switch? Even panic button knows how poor the game looks. The ONLY way it seems they were able get the cutscenes to even look acceptably sharp was to lock the framerate at 20fps (in handheld) and add letterboxing (so a lot of the characters in the cutscenes are cut out of frame. Lmao). But you know what? The cutscenes actually made me wish the whole game was locked to 20fps, because at least I could see what was happening on screen then. If you've been watching gameplay videos of handheld mode and thought "oh, this is just YouTube's compression, it probably looks better in real life", no, it looks worse in real life, and that isn't YouTube's compression you're looking at. That's just how the game looks. I really respect Panic Button, and I have no doubt that they worked their asses off to even get this thing running on switch, but this is a project that should never have happened. Doom Eternal is an amazing game, but not on switch.

Every single other game publisher take note: this is how you do DLC. The amount of content for 8 dollars is staggering. This does not in any way feel like something that was simply ripped from the main game and sold separately. It's an addition to the main game you can buy if you enjoyed the base game itself. All of the added content has been created with the same polish and sheen you would expect in Mario Kart 8, and while not all of the added courses are absolute winners, I have to give a special shoutout to the F-Zero and Legend of Zelda Track, which showed much more respect to their source material than I expected them two. For 8 dollars, it is a steal.

Although there are a few unfortunate missteps in this new Mario Kart game, such as limited match customization options, Mario Kart TV not realizing its full potential, and a rather gimped battle mode, its not enough to take away how utterly fantastic the traditional racing mode is in this game. Every single new track is a winner; and although the new much touted anti gravity feature never truly gives the sensation that you are upside down or riding on a wall, it allows for track designs that twist and curve in the most interesting and thrilling of ways. There is never a dull moment in a courses design. Necessary tweaks to items and a decreased punishment for getting hit make the game much faster paced, fairer, and more skill based. Gone are the days of ending up in first place by accident. Sure a few fortunate item pickups can help, but you need to use them properly, and if you get to first, by jove you've earned it. Also, not enough praise can be given to the games presentation. In my opinion, this is hands down the most beautiful game Nintendo has ever produced and the attention to detail is astonishing. The same has to be said for the soundtrack, which strikes the perfect balance between familiar and nostalgic tones with an energetic, jazzy, and more orchestrated sound that pairs perfectly with the frenetic on screen action. So, in the end, despite a few head scratching and aggravating choices to modes most people won't care to much about, this is probably the purest Mario Kart you can find. The racing mode is the perfect culmination of more than two decades of Mario Kart games and it shows in all the ways that matter the most. If you don't pick this up on the Wii U, than you are missing out on one of the best games it has to offer.
