Seemingly written and directed by distracted 10 year olds for other undemanding 10 year olds. For those who worked on the excellent monster effects, you must feel really let down by the sub-par leaden story/direction. The tone is hugely uneven switching back and forth between disingenuous cutesy moments to scenes of horrific violence. The 2 rating is actually from my 10 year old...I would have given it 0.

Brilliant, brave and barely disguised meditation on the turmoil in Ricky Gervais's own inner self - hardly a 'vanity' project (as misconceived by several critics). Rather, it plays as an intimate study of the struggle between the misanthropic, selfish (and self-loathing) tendencies of the human condition and its battle with the gnawing uncomfortable proposition that true 'happiness' may come from embracing opposite tendencies. British audiences may more easily appreciate the 'twee' setting and nuanced cocktail of pathos and searing humour. Less self-aware U.S. viewers will possibly be challenged by the messy authenticity on display - there is no moral signalling here, just an existential proposition that you can take or leave.

Watching this, my threshold 'metrics' to determine if it's ever worth fighting in a foreign conflict are: - if your political/business elite aren't firstly prepared to sacrifice their children - DON'T - if your fighting to protect a political ideology and not to protect fundamental universal human rights - DON'T - If it is a civilian conflict - DON'T If, after WWII, the U.S. had enshrined a similar core set of enduring 'metrics' to guide it's foreign interventions, I wonder how many of it's wars were truly worth fighting.

Unlike True Detective S2, Fargo S2 continues in an upwards trajectory of superlative writing, acting and direction. Any show that has a hitman quoting Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" before going into battle is a show worth staying with.
