Worth it for Phoenix alone, but let's dive into why critics hate this work. The most obvious answer is it made them uncomfortable, which is exactly what the movie set out to do. The grotesque shots of Phoenix's body, the close-ups of his face that make you squirm, all of them tie in to fit the narrative of, well, "weirdo". It makes you feel creeped out and empty, and that's exactly the purpose of this film. To showcase the oddness and obscurity of such a character as Arthur Fleck. I really wish critics would stop comparing this movie to Scorsese. You're not watching "Taxi Driver", and that's not a bad thing. Take the movie for what it is, not what it could be. And for what it is, it's a great film.
