It's great and I feel like it improves immensely on the formula of the first game, but, not having the characters from the first game playable outside of a side mission mode is very disappointing. At the very least, I wish they were unlockable

It's nice but would have been *so* much better as the action rpg it was meant to be. Goddammit, purists!

Great game, but it's missing the magic from the level-5 entries. Square enix removed a pepped up character change like they removed super high tension from dragon quest 8 3ds, it's like they don't understand cool stuff. So frustrating. The game itself is very good but a lot of their decisions just baffle me.

Lmao, can't believe they paid to have this as second in the front page, but since the score was so low they had to remove Link's Awakening from there You can't make this **** up

Really refreshing RPG experience, I recommend playing this without reading about it first. it was like rediscovering Pokémon, the world is amazing and immersive, the battle system is deceptive it seems like your input has no weight because the monsters attack/inspirit on their own will but it's because of that that you can focus purely on strategy ( and you will need it! ) and keeping your Yo-kai well, the demo was terrible because it heals your yo-kai after every battle and doesn't let you use items so it seems very shallow. in reality you have to plan ahead and be really fast, so it keeps you constantly on your toes. I played this shortly after playing another monster collecting rpg and I WISH it had an "auto A" like the yokai watch battles so i wouldn't be bored. anyway, the music is really good except for a few battle themes. I don't like comparing it to pokemon, but since everyone is doing it, Pokemon X and Y tried really hard to rip off YW and going as far as stealing a few character designs. and YW is, disregarding pokemon BW, the best pokemon game since the original gold and silver. it feels like the natural evolution of those GBC rpgs like robopon, pokemon, and so many others. a pet pevee of mine, pokemon houses still doesn't have beds while this has bedrooms and even bathrooms. it's amazing it's only a little bothersome to recruit some yokai, but it's understandable, they got the recruiting system from Dragon Quest Monsters on GBC it's a bit frustrating sometimes, but i prefer that to the pokemon formula that people have figured out mathmatically and all

it's shocking to see such a bad strategy game coming from Intelligent systems, this would work as a tabletop game, but as a $5 DSi game, it doesn't. nowadays it only supports local multiplayer and the single player mode is basically just a tutorial so you can use your skills online... which is gone. some unbalances in matches make me wonder if this was even tested much before release, there's clearly some stuff that wasn't. one of the biggest downers is that, while Dragon quest has a massive roster of monsters to choose from, Intelligent systems decided to only use FIVE of them in the game they expected this to become some kind of modern chess but the strategies it allows are too shallow for something like that as a die hard fan of dragon quest, I definitely don't recommend this game instead save those 5 dollars for Dragon quest heroes or a possible future release of the 3ds games

it's the N64 game with a fresh coat of paint, actually not even the N64 version but the virtual console version ( since it has those annoying dark screens whenever there's a flash or light on screen ) one could argue that, like in ocarina, a lot could be done with what was left out of the original game due to time constraints, or to refine gameplay to more modern standards making it, but not Grezzo, they just want to make better graphics and make the game easier to assure sales to more casual players. they don't even update the music, which is pretty distracting at times, looking at 3DS graphics and listening to N64 midis is not good and it breaks the experience.

A really bad case of style over substance... before you even start the game throws at your face a lot of needlessly complicated plots and names, some of it will only start making snese about halfway through the game the gameplay itself is needlessly complicated too, it could have been much more fun if they stayed true to megaman x, which they're clearly borrowing from. gunvolt has to mark enemies with his gun and then press R to use his magnetic forcefield to hit them and/or float a lot of areas in the game end up becoming harder than they should thanks to that gimmick. the soundtrack is ok, most of it sounds like filler music from megaman x5 the level design is ok for a common game, but for inticreates it's pretty bad, they put out some of the best ds games ( in japan/europe ) and even their shinchan games had way better/ more enjoyable level design. some of the levels will consist of trial and error, so youll be needing a bit of luck too. most of the boss battles are frustrating and at times feel unfair, with the bosses leaving little to no room for maneuver, all boss battles try to be massive flashy set pieces, which would work better if at least one of them wasn't, it's unbalanced. speaking of the bosses, each of them is a stereotype, some of them adopting the more modern anime stereotypes, but still being characters with absolutely no depth. as an example of a modern stereotype, there's a lazy teen who says something along the lines of "i could be watching cat videos instead of battling with you" SO, this is the equivalent of Inafune waving a flashy keychain with blinking lights and treating the player like a baby the gameplay is very flawed, even for inticreates the music is average, the level design is weak and slow paced with a lot of padding with gimmicky/puzzle segments to make levels seem longer than they really are the american version is STILL censored despite people on the internet making an uproar about it before release and inticreates promising it wouldn't be censored here this game is just Inafune tryign to go back to making games with Zero from Megaman X just as mighty 9 is him getting megaman back, but he's missing on WHY people found Zero cool to begin with, so they spend all their tokens on style and none on making an actual good game or having a decent character development. but instead of bringing back exciting new ideas he's showing why the series should remain dead, there's nothing new, nothing exciting, nothing of substance, it's just him trying to emulate what he thinks fans liked about the games. and as a final insult, it graduated from the Shantae school of crappy endings both the real and fake endings are not only short bad, but is also ends with "this is not the end, it's only the beginning" which as the Super Mario Bros movie proved, it's a failproof way to beg people to ask for a sequel. he's clearly trying to reproduce megaman X, trying to reboot the franchise, but even the first megaman had a nice satisfying ending that let you sit back and think "wow, this was quite a ride" the ending to this made me close my 3ds and think "wow, what a waste of time" even later installments like megaman 8 and x7 had a more satisfying ending the only reason this game is not worse is because Inticreates had a solid base to work with for the gameplay, otherwise this would have been a much much bigger mess. instead of playing this, get an emulator or a R4 cartridge and play their shinchan DS games, I mean it, they're far superior in pretty much every way. which is surprising considering the "legendary" inafune is involved in this project and it turned out to be one of the worst from inticreates in years. his flame of passion for games clearly was extinguished long ago

"Yoshi Island Level expansion pack" would be a more fitting title for this game. nowhere as bad as the DS game but nowhere as remarakble as the original. I'd recommend it for some mindless fun. but be aware the plot is really really stupid and the end level minigames from the flowers are gone and replaced with the flowers being turned into egg coins when you get the wheel to land on a flower, you know, boring uninspired stuff. also, as the plot is really stupid be ready for a anticlimatic/out of nowhere/nonsensical last boss. animations and graphics are pretty stiff and blocky, and the 3D effect is practically nonexistant as everything is placed in close layers and no object or background has real depth. and the soundtrack is nice, the game has a nice main theme but none of the level songs make good use of it, it's close to being one of those songs that stick in your head, but falls short because of the uninspired /bland track arrangement. again, miles above the DS version's soundtrack which was completely bland and barely had any melody to it most of the time. with a few tweaks this game would be a lot better as a sequel to Yoshi Story, but nintendo doesn't seem to like people remembering that game exists.

This game starts out as a fantastic mix of Gradius, Megaman and Wonder Boy, however after playing for some time its flaws end up revealing themselves. Firstly, the gradius power up system ends up working against the player, making the simple act of moving at a bearable speed an annoying chore. you need to grind to get every single power up, and the game barely fills your gauge for each enemy killed so you'll have to spend a few minutes going back and forth at a place with respawning enemies and leveling up your skills to have some chance in the level. it might not seem like much, but you have to spend like 5 minutes grinding in a level that otherwise could be cleared in 4 or 5 minutes. later on you get a boss weapon that allows you to refill your gauge a bit every time you press the Y button away from the enemy, the quicker you press the faster your meter refills, if you're really fast you can get all abilities within a minute and a half, but you'll be tired as soon as you done and there's an entire level ahead. and every time you die, it resets all stats. it's especially bothersome on boss fights since you can't refill while you're dodging the attacks. the butterflies, called Tres, that refil the gauge are also money to buy permanent upgrades, the game barely provides any for each enemy killed, so it ends up becoming another grinding chore. the level designs are pretty bland and a lot of sections repeat often between levels, they're mostly straight lines with a few places in the middle zig zagging up or down. all levels open up in a weird crystal dimension that doesn't really make any sense, so you only get to see what the level really is like about halfway through. and that brings another point, the graphics of the game are really beautiful, a bit repetitive, but still beautiful to look at, so it's even more baffling that they decide to hide some of it with that crystal part. the game sprites and animations are really nice. the soundtrack is nothing special, I think through my entire playthrough with Zizou no track stood out or anythihng, they just do their job. Now, the most aggravating thing with the game, Zizou is supposedly a really powerful character, but even playing with her the game ends up becoming a grindfest, and when you beat the game with her you unlock a second scenario mode with another character, Riva. Riva is pathetic, her attack consists of either, a puny shot that barely reaches in front of her ( 1 sprite width to the front ), or a sword thrust attacks ( 2 swords come from the sides and thrust down ). both are really weak and really worthless, while playing with her even upping your speed, the power up that requires the least Tres, becomes unbearable. through an entire level I only managed to fill her Tres speed meter once, it doesn't help that she can barely hit enemies, and every time she ( or Zizou ) is hit she LOSES Tres, so the upgrade gauge goes down. to try to keep players engaged and to up the replay value the game has multiple endings, the best one requiring hidden powerups in levels to be found, and gathering all of them grants the player a shield powerup too. however this is a bit pointless since to stand a chance against some bosses and some of the stages you have to gather them all and end up seeing the best ending anyway. TL;DR game has beautiful aesthetic and decent music, but its challenge comes from handicapping the player and seeing how much grinding the player can endure before going insane. ( since it has to be done every single time the player dies ) the gradius powerup system is what ruins this game, it quickly wears out its welcome and becomes a weigh keeping the players from progressing at a steady pace. Recommended only if you really like the pixel art on the screenshots. apparently playing with the second character is so tough that there's no footage of it or any of the second scenarios endings on youtube.
