Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice9
Dec 19, 2023
This title was an intriguing surprise, as I was initially apprehensive due to the slower, more methodical pace of the combat and lack of enemy variety. While this is still somewhat of a sticking point for me, the overall presentation of the narrative and sound design led me to become enveloped in the world. The portrayal of Senua's ****, disparate inner voices truly got me into the mindset of the character and provided a palpable weight to the otherwise mechanically tedious combat scenarios. That's where the sound design really kicked things up a notch. Each inner voice, representing a different part of Senua's personality, had a wildly unique tone and really came alive when they were all vying for the protagonist's attentions. This was best experienced while wearing a headset, as the individual voices would trigger in different ears while pressing their influence on our tormented, lead **** the narrative progressed, layers of Senua's mind were peeled away, revealing the depth of her trauma and I was so swept away by the experience, I ended up beating the game in one, prolonged sitting.I know this is a vague review, but it would be a crime to give too much away. This was a thrilling, tense delve into the mind of a compelling character and it should be experienced by anyone that isn't turned off by a slower experience. For those that are, step outside of your comfort zone and try something new.
