Beetlejuice Beetlejuice1
Sep 15, 2024
I wasn't expecting to walk out of the sequel to one of my favourite childhood films, but this film is such mess it was truly painful to watch. Too many characters, too many different sub plots happening at once, the humour falling flat. Tim Burton tries to create something as quirky as the original and in the process neglects an actual coherent and engaging plot. Beetlejuice is introduced way too early with no excitement or surprise. Odd and jarring musical choices that don't match the gothic tone. And to top it all off the protagonist is an irritating, angsty teenager with no personality whatsoever, just a walking cliche. What a disappointment, despite the amazing cast and legendary director

I was pleasantly surprised after the negative reviews. The characters are believable, the dialogue is good, and there are some pretty creepy concepts that get explored. Yeah, no major issues with this film other than it just being a bit too 'safe,' somewhat dull and the ending isn't great. But worth a watch. It was entertaining

Alien: Romulus10

They did an incredible job with this. It's both nostalgic and original. It has a good blend of both horror and action, kind of like an Alien/Aliens crossbreed. The horror is truly disturbing too, and that's coming from a long time horror fan who's seen it all. Even I had to turn my face away at parts. It's about time we got a decent alien film, that actually feels like a horror. For me the android character is the most interesting and pretty much carries the film. It has some brilliant twists as well. I even had a crazy thought that I Preferred it to the originals, that's how good it is. Or maybe I was just starved for too long and now I'm over compensating. Anyway watch it

Oh man this is basically UHF 2. Absolutely hilarious and entertaining from start to finish. It's a bit like the plot from Walk Hard but even funnier. Weird AL is a comedy genius. I'm so glad this film exists and Dan Radcliffe is a treat. So many great actors in the movie too. Nice to see a good comedy for a change as they're a dying breed. I will watch this one again and again

People on here complaining about racism against white people, come on, it's a movie so lighten up and don't take yourself so seriously. Or are you just so racist yourself that you're looking for any opportunity to point the finger and claim you're a victim too? Really all you're doing is proving the message the film was putting across. This was a fantastic film, very funny, just silly fun so enjoy it for what it is. I swear some people read politics into everything. What a way to live. If you're white YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM.

This is the quintessential viking movie. Brutal, disturbing, action packed and thrilling beyond belief. There are no heroes, just the threads of fate being spun. There are no pretty boy vikings making love to hot women and exchanging witticisms. These guys are the real deal. You want see some proper pillaging? Look no further. You want a spine tingling soundtrack that transports you completely into that world? Done. Can you get a more viking-esque film? I've never seen one. You will be at least 67% more manly after watching this masterpiece. Incredible

It looks and feels like a Harry Potter film but it's slow, lacks plot and the script is bad. Too many characters, too much hapenning with no focus or cohesion. Lots of it doesn't make sense either.

So many great actors, such a cool setting. The music is phenomenal, the battles are brutal, but it's the story that carries this film and sets it above so many others for me. I love this idea of three different versions of events being told and it fascinates me how some of them are twisted to suit that person's opinion of themselves or to suit their survival needs. One of the ways I know I've seen a great movie is if I can't wait to watch it again and when I do I enjoy it even more. Its exciting, funny, touching and disturbing. Its about honour, love and bravery. There are heroics, but they are relative to the day and age so don't be shocked if your hero is himself a fallible and petit man. Ben Affleck steals the show for me here as an actor. He completely transforms himself and is a joy to watch.

We walked out 30 minutes in. The film was trying to mimic the work of David Lynch with its surrealness but was very unengaging with no direction or discernable plot. The Director is so obsessed with aesthetics and recreating an era, especially in terms of music, that many scenes just drag on while you watch people singing or dancing. It's all about spectacle. It's supposed to be a horror but the music is mostly upbeat with the occasional jump scares just shoe horned in there.
Nothing is explained, the lead actress is sappy and irritating. The film tries to create a sense of nostalgia for a time period that was only 50 years ago and you're supposed to believe its somehow better than the London of today. They just drive slower cars, dress differently and have different hair cuts. But the music was soooooo much better.... yawn

Despite some negative reviews I was not only pleased with this film but thought it was an original masterpiece. Insidious is my favourite horror film of all time and James Wan further demonstrates his versatility here with this homage to Dario Argento and other 80s slashers. Although it's a slasher is has a somewhat supernatural element to it and certainly isn't predictable or formulaic. I love how Wan is brave enough to push the boundaries of convention and try something new. This is gonna be another love/hate movie I feel as it's so out there and bizarre. The camera work is incredible as per usual and is used creatively to add to that sense of terror. The music is top notch and trademark Wan, unsettling and discordant. Love it love it love it. Some of it is a little unbelievable and fantastical, but even there I think Wan is aware of this as at some points the film morphs into some kind of black comedy like Reanimator. James Wan you are the man! Sure the acting is bad at points and some of it just doesn't make sense, but I dare you not to enjoy it. All that stuff just adds to the intended B-movie feel

It's just a rip off of Groundhog Day, turned into a rather generically themed Rom Com. Someone thought, 'what if you were stuck in Groundhog day, but with someone you loved? Let's make a movie.' The writers went to the effort of doing their science homework, which is cute, but it's still predictable and dull. You know they're gonna fall out at some point and then make up. You know there's gonna be a big scene at the end with the guy making a lofty speech about his love. Funny thing is, the female actress doesn't really seem that into him. Kind of realistic at least, seeing as he's acting so needy.

This film is awesome on every level. It captivated me from start to finish with its humour, engaging story and incredible special effects. Idris holds the show together like the pro he is and all of the characters shine as individuals. They are all given some nice backstory, just enough to get you invested without distracting you from the thrilling action. The grand finale delivers in terms of scale and makes the film feel easily on a par with anything marvel has to offer. There is a beautiful message at the end too that leaves you feeling almost choked up.

This is a really solid martial arts comedy with good performances and I found it very entertaining. It has a light hearted feel about it and the characters are likeable and memorable. It's verging on being a spoof with some of the zany comedy going on. It really makes fun of the genre whilst paying it homage and also has well choreographed and visceral fights. There are one or two bits that were so cool they gave me goosebumps. The premise is very good too and provides and a lot of comedic value, even making the film quite unique. I'd probably watch it again, I really loved it

If the purpose of art is to leave you feeling empty and depressed then this is a masterpiece. Nothing inspiring here, nothing to hold onto or that gives hope. Just a miserable, self-pitying woman wondering around bleak landscapes to sombre piano music. Even the homes she enters seem bereft of joy or life. It was painful to endure. The Director would probably say 'then it served it's purpose.' Gee, thanks mate...

Willy's Wonderland2
Apr 22, 2021
The director misses the point that just because it's grindhouse you still need to have semi decent actors, a good script and an element of plausibility. A bunch of teenagers break into the wonderland to rescue Cage and burn it down but two of them decide to go off alone and hump each other? Makes no sense as one of them had previously come close to going home out of fear. Grindhouse does not equal stupidity and a nonsensical narrative. The first two fights cage has with the animatronics are very lack lustre and him not speaking gets old very fast. It's a shame really as the premise is quite solid. The editing and special effects are pretty decent too.

Yet another horror being spoiled by the characters not acting in believable ways. Whether it's Hush, Alone, the Invisible Man, it's always the same. Firstly, both of them are seeing apparitions and not only do they hide it from each other but they treat the priest like he's a con man, without a moment's hesitation, given what they've seen. Her brother decides to go and tend to goats rather than stay with his traumatised sister, when it's been established that the devil himself is lurking around. But he still has to work apparently. It's ok, he has a pen knife. At this point pure survival would have taken over and you'd have left your dad and vacated the property.
The film blatantly copies other successful horrors, such as It Follows, Hereditary and insidious. The acting is fine, the pacing is good and the imagery is disturbing, but some of the ways is copies these films is unforgivable. At one point his mum walks towards him naked, which is so blatantly ripped from It Follows. I stopped watching at this point. The person in a coma stalked by a demon was also done in Insidious. I hope this director keeps making horrors though. His next one could be a masterpiece. The idea of it being the devil coming for them was nice and the atmosphere was spot on.

Let there be no more doubt that Adam Sandler is in fact a quality actor who's way too underrated and wasted in the usual garbage he appears in. I knew after seeing him in Punch Drunk Love he was very talented and he's just incredible in this. For me this is a tragic tale of how worldly greed and obsession with beauty can ultimately lead to unhappiness. Sandler's Mistress in the movie is the same as the gem he's obsessed with, dangerous and unobtainable. He's a man that has everything but still wants more. He's a man that lusts after excitement and novelty and disregards what he always has. By the end of the film the message is clear. Don't! Everything about this film is perfect. The music, the acting, the pacing. There's so much going on underneath the surface too thematically. I'm still finding hidden meaning in it. A masterpiece

This was a thrilling ride into a fantasy world full of demons, dragons and martial arts masters. It feels like Disney and Pixar are gonna have to up their game to compete with stuff like this. The animation is incredible, the characters well fleshed out, the music is phenomenal and the action set pieces are out of this world. I had to pause the film multiple times to rewind parts that made me tingle all over. The story is very beautiful and relatable too. What a breath of fresh air this was.

This movie is so boring. Whatever hapenned to a film being entertaining? Instead it's just a history lesson full of dull union and political wranglings. The plot is bloated, convoluted and way too hard to follow. This is what happens when you make a film based on a true story like this. Truth is definately duller than fiction here. No likeable characters, no excitement or suspense.

I was loving this film until the clichéd 'bimbo' character appeared. She was just so over the top and unrealistic I found it embarrassing to watch so I walked out. Why not just tone her down a bit to add at least some air of realism. You can hint at her being dumb without needing to smash us in the face with it. I hate to see these negative stereotypes perpetuated as well. A real shame for me. Oh well. By the way I loved the first one. I had to give it a 0 as I walked out. 0 is my go-to score for films that cause me to leave. It's just how I roll. True story

Joker10
Oct 4, 2019
Funny how critics will praise exploitative trash but when a realistic, hard hitting film like this comes out they shy away from it just because it makes them uncomfortable. Yes this is hard viewing, but it's supposed to be. Joker is every person you've ever ridiculed, every person with mental illness you've stared at funny on the bus and judged. This is a harrowing account of how people really feel in our society, taken to an extreme of course, but this is really where we're headed if our politics don't change along with the scapegoating and shunning of those are less fortunate or different in a way that scares us. Critics call it cynical. I say, wake up, take a look outside. Sure its not all awful, but this is a dramatisation of a very real phenomenon. It begs us all to be a little nicer to each other and acts as a stark warning of what can happen when people aren't heard or seen. A powerful film. I just hope we don't see any copycat crimes. This is the only thing that scares me. I'm surprised this film was allowed to made at all, but glad it was

Incredible film on every level. Disturbing, heart wrenching, blackly comic at times and uncompromising in it's brutality. So much so that I'm even weary of watching it again and stomaching some of that imagery. In a way that's my only gripe. I have a tolerance for those things too. But I won't mark it down for that. The brutality is completely in line with the narrative and it's not gratuitous for the sake of it. Masterful stuff. And that ****. Don't listen to the negative reviews. Sure you may hate it, but give it a go. It's looks to me like one of those films people will either love or hate, a bit like Hereditary. It's always the case when a Director is more of a visionary. People struggle a bit with stuff outside of the norm. Sure it's influenced in part by the Wickerman. But it's so much more. It's really an unflinching and accurate portrayal of how how cults indoctrinate new recruits. Educational stuff if you can concentrate and read between the lines.

Could be the worst film ever made. Starts off kind of promising and disturbing but quickly becomes so convoluted, nonsensical and pretentious that it's almost like the Director is making a bad film on purpose. A real surprise after 'It follows.' I gave it one point because somehow it managed to keep me watching it until the end (just curious to see how stupid it could get) and another point because at least Mitchell tried to do something surreal and unique. I would actually recommend this film, despite my score, just so you can have a laugh.

Man this film is hilarious. I don't know whether this guy is enlightened or a complete narcissist, but watching McConaughey swagger around for the duration obeying his every whim is an absolute joy. If the film trys to make any important points, for me it gets lost in the absolute farcical lunacy of some parts. It reminds me of a delicious blend between an Adam McKay and an Evan Goldberg film, just not stop humour and very sweet and touching in places. I'm certain we can all learn a lot from Moondog.

A very entertaining film, but let down by the poor dialogue and lack of plot. It stays centered nicely around its premise though, with no excess rubbish. You get to enjoy what you set out to enjoy, which is just pure, gratuitous brutality. It's very amusing too, that's the best thing about it. It has a really dark sense of humour and I get the impression it's not trying to be anything spectacular. It kept me hooked until the end and I left happy, having seen something original. Good casting for the kid too, he looks like a psycho.

I absolutely loved this film. It had a banging, funky soundtrack like Superbad and it's basically that film with chicks but actually it's even deeper in terms of it's characters and manages to be politically progressive without being either patronising or daft about it. Put it this way, it's a bit better than 'The Hustle!' I found it so memorable and unique in tone. The girls have an awesome chemistry on screen and it's just a joy to watch.

Such an awful film on every level. I couldn't endure more than 20 minutes of it. Anne Hathaway's British accent is atrocious, the script seems like its written by a toddler (even though part of it is robbed from the original), the jokes are unfunny and the whole thing is just unbelievable and farcical. One of the most soulless, awful, unimaginative piles of garbage I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot. Relies on the same clichéd horror tropes again and again. I've never heard so many creaky doors. It takes the amount of jump scares to a new level too, in fact, that's all there really is. None of the characters behave in a realistic manner either. I had to leave the cinema early. What a waste of money. When you think about all the starving people that could have been fed with the money they spent on this nonsense. Everyone involved should hang their head in shame.
