The Hustle

A watchable, unnecessary re-do that works hard but lacks the charm to really zing.

When The Hustle succeeds — in fits and starts, and with occasional big laughs — it’s wholly thanks to the dedication of Hathaway and Wilson, who throw themselves into thinly written roles (the film somehow required four screenwriters) that they spice up by bringing their A-game to material that’s beneath them.

While The Hustle is more overt when it comes to discussing gender, including a monologue about why women are better suited to “the con” than men, it doesn’t really have all that much to say. Not about gender, not about con artistry, and definitely not about how to craft a satisfying studio comedy.

It never manages to overcome its weak jokes and tired plot points.

Wilson and Hathaway don’t click. The characters feel as if they were workshopped separately, and efforts to combine their comic energy on screen fall flat.

Seriously missing the memo in a cringe-inducing way, The Hustle takes a perfectly fine premise from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels—two predatory men get played by a savvier woman—and obliterates it by swapping genders and ultimately selling out its feminist credibility.

Like Holmes & Watson proved late last year, two comedic giants is just not enough to save terrible material that should have been fixed long before the film went into production.

This movie had me laughing from beginning to end, Anne Hathaway & Rebel Wilson were a dynamic duo in this movie. I love that they did a remake with a female cast because it worked so well. I also loved the ending (No I won’t give it away) BUT there could easily be a sequel to this movie & I am truly hoping they do. A sequel would be amazing because there’s so much more they could do & so many different storylines. I love both Anne Hathaway & Rebel Wilson & they really did such a fantastic job in this movie. Fingers crossed that it does well enough for them to make a sequel.

Was tough to sit through. Though it was funnier than a lot of modern comedies I've seen in the last couple of years. Can't recommend it.

A new low for Anne Hathaway while for Rebel Wilson is business as usual, which is not surprising at all.
