The Northman

It is a wild and trippy ride that mixes “reality,” with sequences that dip into the mystical world of the Vikings, and back out again. It’s also meticulously made, with an attention to detail as close to actual 10th century Viking life as is possible.

It’s a film with fingerprints all over it; one that has been crafted rather than manufactured, and rewatches reveal a chance to revel in its sharpness; a scene in which Amleth seeks the counsel of a blind Seeress (the incomparable Björk) teems with intricate set and costume details, while a violent game of Knattleikr – a Viking cross between lacrosse and rugby – proves more adrenaline-inducing than any CGI special of recent years.

The Northman doesn’t invite its viewers into its world, but instead dares them to try to catch up.

The Northman, whether you approach it as legitimate folklore or as a testosterone-fueled Saturday-afternoon lark, speaks to the 10-year-old boy in all of us, with a loud and mighty Viking burp.

It’s a hearty stew of influences and rewards and, yes, some gristle.

While the canvas of Robert Eggers latest is considerably broader than that of The Witch and the Lighthouse, it feels as if its psychological chaos hasn’t expanded accordingly.

Instead of the roots of Shakespeare’s play, The Northman merely serves up its raw material both half-baked and overcooked.

My expectations were high. You know that fear when you're going to rewatch something you really like but there's a chance you getting disappointed? It's pretty much it. Fortunately, in this case, it was even better."The Northman", visually speaking, is one of the movies for sure. Rewatching it on an OLED is just another experience. The deep inky blacks made the photography a hole lot dramatic. The "atmos" mix surround you with involving elements. Getting into a scene here happens **** action scenes, overall cast performance and production are top notch. Technically impecable. Just watch. Trust me.

Kind of slow, spiritual and very symbolic in nature. I guess that's to be expected when you look at Eggers' previous movies. But it was too slow and too boring for my taste.

The Northman is nothing short of an absolute bore. The trailer spells out the plot, which is incredibly predictable, and it does very little to maintain your interest. Couple that with weak acting by the cast, some awful CG, and a runtime that is at least 20 minutes too long and you got yourself a pretty weak movie. To me, It felt like a lot of the things we were seeing (especially the CG heavy scenes) were totally unnecessary and just there for padding. I wish things had been more grounded and practical but sadly they weren't. This one is a disappointment.
