Maybe a 6,5. Ultimately disappointing. I was expecting more than this, honestly. It is unique and often fun to watch, but the revelations about the human beings and our societies feel simplistic and somehow forced. Missed chance.

Unfortunately this film does not completely work. It wants to be something but it does not get there. There is a shameful manipulation of some facts in order to make things appear more epic and increase the opportunity for great speeches. This becomes a little too much the untold goal of the film. The balance between the comedy elements and the serious film is not well maintained, and things end up being quite unconvincing. A lost opportunity with a good a promising cast.

Great film. The pace and rhythm of this movie is close to masterful. The variety of contexts shown and the delicacy of the storytelling has become so uncommon, that some will consider this a minor film. Wrong. Excellent performances and flawless direction. Remarkably well chosen music, and used very effectively. A great surprise.

Lovely tribute to a figure of Cuaron's childhood and to the landscapes that saw him grow. Sometimes an exercise on purposeful excess and studied tedium and often a poem of beautifully remembered images. The style won't surprise anybody familiar with mid 20th Century European film, although I can see how Roma could be an entry door into such tasty territory, for new generations of film viewers.

Sad, it is. Great performances, it has. Not sure what else. The cinema verité style and the open intimacy of the main character, pushes us towards becoming one with James, but ultimately this does not happen (to me at least), since, even for a 20 something, his stupid behaviour and lack of awareness make him seem unreal.

I keep trying, but I cannot connect with Paul Thomas Anderson supposed genius and mystery. This film is a fantastic formal exercise. Ok, yes, it is quite awesome that the movie is shot during 12 years using the same actors. Since this is film about growing up, that fact is quite important. BUT, since this is not a documentary, just a fiction piece, we couldn't care less if the kid, teen, young adult, is the same person or not. Who cares. The point is that as narrative story is flat, it lacks depth and character insight ... too much time span, too many broad strokes. It was entertaining, just that.

Wrong choice tonight. The film takes a couple of risks that I appreciate, like showing a 12 year old trying to be sexy, smart and in love. Somehow politically incorrect, great!. But, the action and plot are clunky, ridiculously unrealistic, genre jumpy and ultimately disappointing. Entertaining, yes, but life's too short.

I chose to watch it so none to blame. I wanted to be entertained, that's it. Of course, there is much better entertainment out there that doesn't completely feel like a waste of time. There is a lack of life in the characters (?) and relationships that makes it just a factory made cliche. The part with Sutherland is slightly better.

At times funny and entertaining. At times dramatic and disturbing. At some point this film becomes too much and it ends up almost ridiculously. On the way, there are some interesting conversations and considerations, and of course, originality. The sexuality is quite clinical and cold, not much of a provocation. The disturbing part comes because of the violence, as it usually happens. A **** or a ****, organs that provide life and pleasure, keep being a taboo on the screens, while guns and blood become our children's bread.

Entertaining and mildly fun, this film's two parallel plots aren't balanced convincingly. It is certainly difficult to show the facts and processes that help break Enigma and win the war, and at the same time, to pay attention to the struggles and suffering of a homosexual in 1940's UK. Maybe a longer film could have done justice to Turing's tremendous story.

I had fun watching this film. I liked the music and the village looks great. The winter is cold and the acting is good. Sure. But really, what is all this over praising about? where is the the criteria of these critics that refer to this as one of the best representations of the misery of artistry? Are they afraid of being considered un-intellectual? Have they ever looked overseas for other ways of representing art?

A powerful film. The parallels between the “Conquista” times and the revolts in contemporary Cochabamba are well-constructed and self-explanatory. Great and effective editing work. The characters possess an energy and truth that is not easy to find in today’s films. The internal conflict that the characters go through, the psychological development of some of them, and the relationships with others, keep up the audience's interest and attention

It is fun to watch and brave enough (6 long sequences!), but quite flawed. At times it feels that these two have never had a conversation before, given the themes and issues that they keep revisiting. Some parts seem too forced and artificial for such a mature (in time) relationship. It looks like someone felt that "someone has to be always talking or it will seem that there is no content! -even during the sunset scene!!!!-" (nothing further from the intention or the French films that give inspiration to Before Midnight, where natural conversations are as important as scene composition, space and silence) Great effort from the actors that must still be wondering "couldn't we just shut up and kiss?!"

No offense, because we all have been 12 years old, but the only way you can consider this film mind blowing, smart, creative and blah blah blah is if you are 12 or below. I give it 3 points because of the city landscape and some well done effects. Everything else is quite vague and boring.
