JUIKER

A brilliant mind-screw of a story that explores every corner in sight. Provocative, thrilling, surprising and also slow in parts -- but I'm not at all convinced that that's a bad thing. This might (mifht well) be a movie I'm still impressed with when I watch it ten years from now. Far better than Speilberg's AI with which it has some similarities. Better, to my mind, than 2001, with which it also has some similarities. It is brilliant.

Rex Reed "seems to have aged 40 years" since the last time he gave a relevant film review. The only guy in the world who hated Inception. I bet this is great.

It is, in my humble opinion, perfect from start to finish, a visionary, thrilling, moving, completely unique film-watching experience. I love this movie.

If you think Snowpiercer is great there's a Canadian sci-fi series from the 1970's called Starlost that will (apparently) blow your mind. It had a similar premise to Snowpiercer only set in space, and it was about the same quality (okay, a bit lower. Starlost was horrible.) This is merely a step above bad... very much a B-movie, with some digital effects and some decent acting.

It's a neat package of a movie but it never achieves any sustained emotion. The back story of Bullock's loss seems strained, implanted into the movie to add drama to a story with plenty of heft already. I just didn't connect with it all that strongly and found it forgettable. IMO, we are still waiting for Cuaron's masterpiece.

Maybe the ending was a bit of a letdown but the first three quarters of this are a slick, eye-popping sc-fi lover's wet dream. I liked this a whole lot. What the heck is Slant Magazine? Metacritic's scoring is, as so often, head scratching.

I think this is on par with Source Code and Moon (and maybe even Twelve Monkeys) as story-driven scifi that could probably bear several watchings over the years. It's a fine addition to the canon of fine scifi movies.

Stretches the bounds of credibility but it's still gun-blazing entertaining and in spite of its excesses it still has the ring of truth to it... that there is a lot of BS to being a cop in LA but justice somehow wins its small victories. Reality aint pretty, justice aint pretty but if you want pretty, you just gotta stay away from ugly.

Superbly well- acted by everyone on screen and beautifully scored by Bruce Peninsula in a truly remarkable soundtrack that adds so much to the film. For all the fine, fine performances here, Amy Rutherford in a brief role as a grieving mother deserves special mention. In all, while the film is short and might be charged with under-serving its story, there is nary a misstep here. I am looking forward to more, much more, from this director.

I wanted to like this movie and I wanted it to get better but it never did. Long, tedious shots of blinking lights and pans through walls and over rooftops are not my idea of storytelling. The movie intends to be artful, perhaps, but there is nothing artful at all about the director's inability to pace this properly. In between the unbearably long scene changes there is a highly original (if relentlessly dreary) story based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead as seen through the eyes of a young drug casualty. I would say that the director is obviously misanthropic, too, and that's not a view I share. (Maybe that's the key, then. Maybe he's trying to tell the audience, "Look at what a bunch of idiots you are, sitting through all this turgid nonsense.") Anyway, it's horrible in a variety of ways but I'll give him points for telling an original story (which would have been about a half hour long) and going some places movies have never gone before (but going many more places no movie has a right to bother).

It's a great little history lesson. The movie is certainly implausible except for the fact that it is all based quite closely on the real life ****. For all of his repugnance you still must watch to see how he pulls this all off and how it might all end. If there's an overarching persistent flaw it is the way the movie surveys his life and crimes and never once even tries to dig into some pithy look at motivation. Still, very entertaining.

It definitely stretches plausibility while also trotting out more than a few cliches but Nick Nolte, Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton make a lot of this work very well in spite of those flaws. The location shooting in Philly and Pittsburgh adds a a lot of needed grit, too. Hardy and Nolte absolutely make this memorable and worth watching.

This movie reminds me of a mostly forgotten film from the '80's called the Rapture starring Mimi Rogers. I think anyone who saw that movie remembers it quite vividly for its uniqueness and its compellingly honest take on evangelical apocalyptism. This is a great movie for the times and I'm sure we'll remember it ten or twenty years from now (unless the world ends before then, ha). Both leads are excellent, yes, it does tax the patience a bit in parts but it also delivers some unique twists and turns in its two hours. I liked it, I recommend it.

Very stylish filmmaking with lots of aspects that I didn't care for. Gosling plays his character as weirdly smug and the pacing seems deliberately slow in a way that is only annoying. That said, Bryan Cranston is predictably very watchable, the plot twists and turns and never flinches from following through to very natural conclusions, and there are great payoffs. Overall, the film favors style over real substance, art over literacy.

Just another amazing Potter flick full of rich character development, imaginative recasting of classic fantasy elements, brilliant mixing of subtle moments with epic action, never-before-seen realistic effects, all tossed into two plus hours of true cinematic wizardry. Can't wait to watch all 20 hours of the entire series all over again once this comes out on Blu-Ray.

This is a little movie that in some ways (A list actor, big budget) acts like a big movie. But this is is not a movie focused on great effects but is instead focused on storytelling. Duncan Jones (Moon) is getting closer to his masterpiece certainly.

A good, little flick. Nothing less, and nothing more. Now, why does Metacritic demand you to have at least 150 characters? So you have to be like a long-winded, full-of-yourself pretentious movie reviewer wannabe? Just more exemplary of how the revamp of last year remains web ****

The two principals each offer Oscar-worthy performances that the Academy bigotedly ignored because neither of them is a day over 13 years old and the movie is a "horror" movie. Too bad, but typical. This is a beautiful character-driven story that excels on many levels.

Some reasons why this movie is great... that the haters just seem to utterly miss. a) Superb cinematography focused on a bleak southern landscape that easily reflects the movie's naturalistic theme b) Motifs such as different portrayals of money determining fate c) Pithy dialogue in which the Coens' derive cornpone wisdom out of people who have seen too much (love the scene with the two retired lawmen in the desert shack near the end) d) Tommy Lee Jones, all wrinkled and angst-ridden about the state of the world when he should be looking forward to retirement. e) lots more but you can read critics reviews to find out what those reasons are. I'm not prone to giving out 10s unless something deserves it. I've seen this three times and it's as perfect as movies come. Some of the haters here are just downright pretentious while others really are too dumb to get a great piece of film making like this.

A superb war film with not a glimpse of actual warfare in it. The performances are all utterly compelling but what makes this movie great is the way director Oren Moverman slowly builds to big dramatic payoffs. In the small pantheon of modern warfare movies this stands tall.

An imaginative reboot of the superhero story with some cool visuals. I hate superhero stories at this point but this ranks in the top four of all time on my list, behind The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Spiderman 2, although this may be better than S2. Chloe Moretz is a very cool young actress.

As with other Nolan movies there's a lot of sleight-of-hand in blinding you to the big plot holes. In the case of this movie, I found those holes genuinely bothersome. See this, there's lots to like, but so far, his masterpiece is still the Dark Knight.
