What really separates this game from Super Smash Brothers is the ability to unlock perks, skills and costumes by leveling up a character as they gain experience. Experience can be earned through meeting specific play goals. As a live service game, it also offers downloadable content and has its own currency. There is a lot of talk about XDefiant being the prodigal Call of Duty killer. I found the games to be different experiences. Sure, there are a lot of commonalities, but a Call of Duty killer it is not. To me, it seems more like the recent Battlefield without the grand arenas. XDefiant is certainly worth checking out and I suspect it may just replace Battlefield rather than Call of Duty in the realm of the top first-person shooters.

As a huge fan of the original Sonic trilogy, I was very happy with the original release of Sonic Origins. My only real complaints are the selection of Game Gear games and the change in some of the music, but I understand why.

Succeeding where Ingress failed, Pokemon GO adds to it the element of catching hundreds of Pokemon while wondering the world. A player does not need to be a fan of the mainline Pokemon games to enjoy this one.

I really enjoy the Ultimate Ninja Storm games. This one has more characters, more costumes and more collectibles. However, it could have easily been downloadable content for UNS4. UNSC does not look that much different from UNS4 and functions exactly the same. It also primarily uses a mix of low and high definition still images to tell the stories. At least the English anime voice cast is there, although some lines seem phoned in. Fans will like it, but those just looking for an arena fighter can probably pass on it and not feel like they are missing anything.

Back in the old days there were these small devices which contained a little screen. On the screen was a tiny creature that needed fed, entertained, walked and put to bed before the device could be set down and time itself out. If the device was ignored long enough, it would result in the death of the creature. This application is an update of that type of game. The single-player mode does a good job on getting users through the basic play mechanics without any difficulty until the later levels. The player-versus-player mode is a mixed bag of challenge. This is due to the fact that users can customize teams through recruiting and training. On the plus side, the users can always join with others in an alliance.

Of the time spent with this application, fusing weaker items to more powerful ones and returning with gear of a higher gear score is gratifying. Fusing two great items together is a hoot in battle and well worth the effort. The only real complaint is that lag is consistent in battle and places were other users roam. Unlike many other games in its genre, this application seems to shortcut some features while over-complicating others. For example, battling is done in simulation. Users choose their military for an attack and then after a little bit of time have passed they learn the results of the battle. Another example is that construction is limited to one object at a time. That slows the game down, especially when certain structures require minutes to build. The only way to build more structures simultaneously is spending rubies, which eventually requires that real money is spent. However, this review is based upon the game as a whole, not one person’s disdain for its differences compared to other applications of the genre.

An animal species goes extinct every three-and-a-half days. A game like this application may just prevent an additional species from going extinct each year. With that said, this application is straight forward. Users are given weapons and must hunt wildlife in a number of different settings. Hunting requires energy and a user may have a maximum of 10. First, it is a true massive multi-player game (MMO) that offers cooperative and player versus player combat. Second, even with over a dozen other users in the same area, there was no discernible lag. Third, characters are free to join guilds, but must pay to create new guilds. Finally, playing as a vampire, the feeding mechanic and its short-term payoff can be the difference between death and uber-death. The user is a vampire… That means that they are already dead, so being dead and then dying is uber-death…

Perhaps the two biggest selling points of Pokemon X & Y are the over 60 new Kalos region Pokemon and the mega evolutions. However, not everything is as good as some players would like. While the traditional racing modes remain intact, the battle mode is no longer as it was previously. It has now been forced into the current assortment of tracks, no longer existing in cleverly designed structures that make combat fun. It is sad to say, but an added feature that created hours of fun off the track in the previous games has been changed into something too close to the main attraction and thus loses its appeal.
