MultiVersus

MultiVersus shows there's enough promise to expand the platform fighter genre with a new focus on 2v2 gameplay and intriguing movesets for each character. We didn't call Mortal Kombat a Street Fighter clone, despite them sharing a 2D plane. Nintendo didn't even begin the platform fighter genre: it only popularized it. The term "Smash Clone" is a demeaning one, which is a huge turnoff for many. MultiVersus should get love for its concept, and as it continues to build, hopefully it will get its time in the sun.

MultiVersus is fun and has everything it needs to succeed. The responsive gameplay, even with flaws, remains its main attraction. The cast is very well put together, and their abilities align with the backstory of each one of them, adding more immersion to the proposal.

Even with the balancing issues and a clear rough start to its first season, MultiVersus’ incredibly solid and unique core mechanics, along with its clear love and respect for every character and series that it represents, let it stand close to the top of the genre. It still needs some fine-tuning, but I’m confident that in a year’s time, MultiVersus will be standing strong next to Smash.

While it’s clear that some things need work on MultiVersus, it’s encouraging to see that the things that truly matter – the unlocking of characters and the core gameplay systems – are the things that have received the most attention. These are easily the two strongest tenets of MultiVersus’ offerings thus far. With time, I can only hope that the lack of variety in levels, lacklustre music, and slower cosmetic offerings can be remedied.

MultiVersus is a surprising mashup that brings together a diverse cast of characters from different franchises in a chaotic and fun fighting game. The game’s blend of familiar faces and accessible gameplay offers something for both casual players and fighting game enthusiasts. While it might not be the most polished entry in the genre, its sheer variety and charm make it an entertaining and unexpected hit.

MultiVersus' current cast of characters is something truly special, and it's impossible to not be excited for what comes next. The fighting is less immediately appealing — though there is quite a lot of fun to be had here, the game simply doesn't come close to the explosive pace and superb feel of its main competitor.

MultiVersus could have been a fun multi-platform answer to Super Smash Bros, but the choice to adopt a free-to-play model with staggering costs for characters locks much of the fun behind paywalls or extensive grinding. While it succeeds in delivering whimsical, cross-franchise battles that players love, the free-to-play model makes it all feel worthless. This mishandling results in a game that I feel, despite its potential, won’t retain players once they realize the hassle.

Este juego cuenta con un concepto sólido, personajes carismáticos y un abanico de movimientos variado. Además, ofrece numerosos eventos que mantienen el interés de los jugadores al presentar desafíos constantes. Sin embargo, su principal inconveniente radica en el notable retraso entre los comandos del mando/teclado y la ejecución en pantalla, algo que ocurre incluso con una buena conexión a internet y no se ha resuelto hasta ahora. Lo más frustrante es que este problema persiste inclusive en modos contra la CPU, donde el lag es muy evidente. Para un juego de lucha, esta desincronización resulta especialmente perjudicial, ya que el género exige una respuesta rápida y precisa. Aun así, el título no deja de ser atractivo: su historia (o lore) es entretenida y, para ser un juego gratuito, se nota el esmero que los desarrolladores han puesto tanto en los personajes clásicos como en los nuevos.

This Review is retrospective. I recently remembered that Multiversus ever existed. It's now mid-2025, and the game officially was shut down, making its lifespan a little under 3 years. I feel Multiversus was and is exactly what much of the gaming industry gets wrong about Multiplayer games today.Multiversus, from the beginning, was clearly a shallow shell **** that was entirely based on the wacky roster of characters. It added little to nothing interesting to the fighting game genre. It was packed with battlepass-like microtransactions that no one wanted to buy because the game itself wasn't good. This game was created to be an "Alternative" to Smash. The only problem with alternatives is- Why would I go and play Multiversus, an alternative to Smash, when I could just go and play Smash?As a whole, this game was awful. The Roster was its main appeal, but the roster was solely cosmetic. It wasn't fun to play as Lebron James because his move set added to the game's playability and complexity, but instead, you play as him because it seemed funny to play as Lebron James. Outside of the character roster, the core gameplay itself wasn't there. The fighting was floaty and inconsistent. The online game not only ran terribly, but was terrible at matchmaking. Often, you get put with a person, and you either destroy them or they destroy you. It was an inconsistent, cash grab, smash clone, shell ****, and I feel sorry for those who believe it was ever something more than a crappy advertisement.
