Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri9

So addictive, so deep and engrossing... Days lost... Amazing game. The best parts are the beginning and mid-game... by late game the knife's edge tension has gone and you are usually either winning by a mile or just stuck in mediocrity. Still, really fun to play.

Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast10
Jun 5, 2014
We cannot understand all the negative reviews for this game in my house. My son, wife and I play this more than any other racer on the Wii (and we have nearly all of them). Tight, fun controls and a lot of hidden depth. After a few play sessions I realized that if I can time my banana fueled turbo boosts to hit a few barrels in a row the turbo boost is extended for example. There seems to have been an agenda to hate on this game at the time of its release. Picking up a Wii and this game in 2014 and it is clearly better than most other racers on the system. Reviewers say the on rails mechanic is an insult. It is hardly on rails- you will just slowly go around the track bumping into things if you go afk. Comparing it to the apparently untouchable Mario Kart Wii this racer does not have the ridiculous "give constantly overpowered items to the guy at the back" programmed in. You win your races due to skill and timing. It is also a great little workout at times as you pump the num chuck and remote to get up to full speed- Once at max speed you can focus on maneuvering. So, all in all, a criminally underrated game imo. And for me Mario Kart Wii is just the opposite.

Kirby's Epic Yarn10

I play this game with my 4 year old. He loves it and laughs a lot. He likes to pick my kirby character up and throw him across the screen. Very like Super Mario Bros but without the difficulty spike (at least for me).. Perfect for young kids- with a nicely narrated story- and it`s sheer platforming goodness for us old folks too.

X-COM: Apocalypse10

City managment, real time tactical group combat, a living cityscape where hostile organisations or those inflitrated by the alien menace can and will attack you. So raid them first. Send your ships to smash their properties! Research the alien tech you capture and use it for your organisation... Wow...I cannot believe how much this old game has to show modern games. Fancy graphics it may not have, but the depth of this game is absolutely remarkable. If only they remade this... sigh.. As life, like games, are about the journey, not the destination. X-com apoc is an amazing journey. I got this back in 1997 and every 5 years or so I come back to it. I quit when I get near the end of the game because I have lost the motivation to continue now I know the journey is coming to an end. That is after countless hours of fun however. Just try it.

SoulCalibur Legends10

I love this game. I recently got a secondhand Wii. It has 40 odd games and some classics like Mario Galaxy etc.. But which game do I like to play most? This one. Soul Calibur has easy to pick up and responsive controls- the onscreen sword responds very well to the wii remote and num chuck. The graphics are good, I found the story quite lightweight but entertaining. It is a good workout to play- I finish after a 20 minute session with a light sweat from swinging the remote about so much. As a 32 year old gamer I have played a lot of serious PC games and have lately come to appreciate the casual fun that a fun sword swinging game like this offers. I would give it 8 but seeing as how this game has so many miserable ratings I am upping it to 10 to push the meta up a bit. Enjoy!

Such gaming goodness! So satisfying to collect the stars and the level design makes me go all gooey.. The only issue I have is with control - controlling Mario underwater can be tough.
