One star for the look. This is a beautiful looking film. It really does shine with some images that are exuberant and have more potential than the movie can justify. One star for the music. It's a good score. One star for Talia Shire and Kathryn Hunter both. No stars for anyone else. Adam Driver carves ham out of an unnecessary Hamlet monologue. Nathalie Emmanuel is even worse. This should be studied for how not to deliver dialogue. No stars for the story. That's because there isn't one. It's also because there could be a great story from a very simple and timely premise: should we put up with the problems of the status quo because most of our material needs are met or should we risk our livelihood on dreaming of a better way forward and take a leap of faith into the future instead of edging towards a seemingly inevitable fall? Add ego and the bonds of family and star crossed lovers, that's a recipe for a good movie. Coppola doesn't just spill the ingredients with his ambition and vapid profundity, he ruins the whole kitchen. You will wonder what kind of evening you might have had if it had been prepared well.
