The Substance10
Nov 27, 2024
This is the most disgusting, grotesque, insane, blood-soaked, and completely unhinged movie ever; but I loved it. The cinematography is excellent, and the visuals are striking, with some super cool shots referencing The Shining, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Lost Highway and Psycho. The theme of this movie is very well done, presenting an unflinching exploration of society’s obsession with youth and beauty, particularly toward women, even if it’s not subtle in the slightest, shoving the message down your throat in an over-the-top manner. The body horror aspect of this movie is phenomenal, with all the practical effects they used. The performances are outstanding, especially from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. This movie isn’t afraid to hold back—It cranks the disgusting factor all the way up to an 11 and then breaks the dial. The last 45 minutes of this movie are pure chaos and absolute insanity. I also enjoy how the gore is essential to the message it aims to send; it’s not just gore for the sake of it. Another reason I love this movie is that it feels relevant in the age of Ozempic and TikTok beauty filters. It is also masterfully crafted by French director Coralie Fargeat. Watching this in a packed theater made the experience even more unforgettable. When it’s all said and done, this film might not be for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. I’d recommend it to anyone who has the stomach for it.

Fantastic Mr. Fox10
Nov 26, 2024
Are you cussing with me that you haven’t seen Fantastic Mr. Fox? This is the most perfect movie ever. If someone asked me what a perfect movie is, this would be it. Wes Anderson’s unique aesthetic shines beautifully throughout this movie. The visuals are absolutely gorgeous, capturing the rich, warm tones and colors of autumn. The cinematography is fantastic, and the voice acting is superb, with extraordinary performances from George Clooney, Willem Dafoe, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Meryl Streep, and Owen Wilson. The theme is deep and meaningful, focusing on identity and finding yourself. The dialogue is sharp and witty, with some lines hitting surprisingly hard and catching me off guard. The humor is zany and quirky, making me fall in love with the movie even more. The stop motion is excellent and well done, with phenomenal set design. The storytelling may be basic, telling a good vs. evil story, but it’s original because it explores relationships, friendships, and family. The soundtrack is awesome, blending licensed music and an original composed score perfectly. This movie appeals to a wide range of audiences, making it even more amazing. This movie is extremely mature, adding depth to its charm. It also means so much to me because it’s a yearly tradition that I rewatch every autumn with my mother, making it even more special. I could gush about this movie forever but I’d rather you see it for yourself. I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Gladiator II8
Nov 25, 2024
For all intents and purposes, this movie shouldn’t have been good because legacy sequels tend to ****, but this movie surprised me and was actually fantastic. The cinematography was gorgeous. The set design was on par with the original and did an amazing job transporting you into the Roman Empire. This movie had a huge scope and scale. The performances were all top-notch, especially from Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Denzel Washington, and Connie Nielsen. The score was fabulous. The action was epic, bloody, and brutal. I felt more entertained during this film than the original, but I still feel the original is the better movie. The pacing was okay and tended to drag a little. One thing I didn’t like was the CGI—it took away from some very important parts of the movie. The blood effects were also horrendous and looked so fake. Another thing I disliked was that it felt way too similar to the first Gladiator and kind of tread along the same story beats. In summary, I think Ridley Scott did an awesome job taking us back to Rome for another movie, and I recommend this to all fans of the original.

Garden State7
Nov 23, 2024
The Garden State offers a quirky and fantastic movie that I recommend. The movie is very sad at certain points, and the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. It is heartfelt and personal, with great performances, especially by Natalie Portman and Zach Braff. The theme is great, focusing on finding meaning in the small things in life. The dialogue is humorous and authentic, and the script is well-written. The cinematography captures a sense of melancholy. Ultimately, it’s a touching and memorable journey worth taking.

Dinner in America9
Nov 22, 2024
Join this fugitive punk rocker on this epic love story. This movie is very weird, but in a good way. It was extremely funny. The cinematography feels raw, and it highlights the characters chaotic energy. The directing is great, with the director expertly able to blend moments of chaos with genuine tenderness. The movie is well written with sharp dialogue and offbeat characters. Underneath the punk rock exterior the movie is surprising heartfelt. The pacing is unconventional but it works for the movie. Make sure you rock on and watch this movie

Gladiator9

For the glory of the audience Ridley Scott crafted an absolutely epic movie. The set design and costume design is absolutely stunning. The Cinematography is amazing especially for the movie being nearly 25 years old. This movie looks absolutely beautiful and some of the shots are breathtaking. The performances are all excellent with standouts from Joaquin Phoenix and Russell Crowe. It was brutal violent, and gory. The movie was extremely well written with amazing dialogue, and was also well shot and directed. In the grand scheme of things, Ridley Scott truly created an epic spectacle.

A Real Pain9
Nov 18, 2024
That’s the way Jesse Eisenberg gets by making fantastic movies. This movie was absolutely hilarious. The performances were excellent, especially from Kieran Cullen, who delivers an Oscar-worthy performance, and Jesse Eisenberg was also great. This movie is extremely well-written, with exceptional dialogue throughout the film. It was also extraordinarily directed, with some beautiful shots and great cinematography. The themes of this movie were very complex and emotional, and oftentimes very heartfelt and heartbreaking. To conclude, this was a fantastic movie and one of my favorites of the year. I highly recommend all of you watch this phenomenal movie.

Heretic9
Nov 17, 2024
Oh boy, I had no idea what to expect from this movie, but I was shocked—this movie is amazing. The cinematography is great. Hugh Grant delivers an incredible performance. The atmosphere of this movie made it feel very claustrophobic. This movie made me think and intrigued me. The soundtrack was awesome, with great song choices such as Creep and The Air That I Breathe. This film made me think about religion in a different light; it made me realize things I never knew, and it was very interesting. It had some kind of funny moments sprinkled throughout the film. I loved how it was more of a dialogue-driven psychological thriller; it was a twist on the genre. Going into this movie knowing nothing, I am glad I decided to check it out.

Juror #28
Nov 17, 2024
Upon consideration of the motion filed by Metacritic, the court hereby labels Juror #2 a fantastic movie. The cinematography was pretty good, and the performances were fabulous, especially by Nicholas Hoult, J.K. Simmons, and Toni Collette. I thought the movie was well-written and directed. Throughout the entirety of the movie, I was engaged and enthralled. The pacing was very slow, but it worked for this kind of movie. All things considered, if this is Clint Eastwood’s final movie, then he went out with a bang.

Going into this movie after hearing all the buzz and praise it was garnering, I was kind of let down. Don’t get me wrong; this movie is still great—it’s just not the masterpiece I thought it would be after hearing all the hype and awards it was receiving. The cinematography was beautiful, and some of the shots were gorgeous. The pacing was pretty slow, but I didn’t mind it. The performances were excellent, especially from Mikey Madison, who, in my opinion, should win an Oscar for Best Actress. I also feel like Sean Baker gave us a pretty accurate portrayal of the sex worker industry. I found this movie to be absolutely hilarious, and it was also very well-written and directed. In the long run, do I think this movie deserved all the awards it was getting? Probably not, but I still enjoyed the movie and had a good time watching it.

The Batman10
Oct 31, 2024
Thursday, October 31: I have seen this movie’s true face. It is the best Batman movie ever. This movie realizes Batman’s greatness in a classic noir story. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful for a comic book film. The score by Michael Giacchino is fantastic, and the soundtrack is great as well. The performances are outstanding, especially from Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, and Jeffrey Wright. In my opinion, Robert Pattinson is the greatest actor to play Batman. This movie has an outstanding sense of realism, avoiding your typical comic movie tropes. The Batsuit design is so friggin’ cool, man; it’s my personal favorite Batsuit design by far—it’s just so awesome. All of Batman’s gadgets are so cool too. The movie is very captivating, especially since it clocks in at 3 hours. It has a great depiction of the dirty, disgusting, and grimy city of Gotham. The Riddler is also a great choice for the villain in this story. By the end, it doesn’t just prove it’s a great comic book movie; it proves it’s the best Batman movie of all time.

Longlegs9
Oct 31, 2024
Let me just say now, Longlegs is one of my favorite horror movies ever. The cinematography is very dark and eerie, creating a terrifying atmosphere. The 4:3 aspect ratio adds a claustrophobic feeling. The performances are excellent, especially from Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe. The marketing for this movie was absolutely insane; it’s brilliant when you think about how big-budget studios can’t even market their movies well. Don’t get me wrong; I was definitely on edge and creeped out during this movie, but I was never truly scared, because the trailers and advertisements made it seem like the scariest movie ever made. This movie heavily reminds me of The Silence of the Lambs. I know a lot of people did not like the twist, but I personally loved it. One gripe I have with the film is that it’s a little too short; we could’ve benefited from about 30 more minutes. When it’s all said and done, Longlegs has become a new personal favorite horror movie.

Zodiac10
Oct 29, 2024
This is the Zodiac speaking. David Fincher is the GOAT. This movie has excellent cinematography with an unsettling atmosphere, depicting real horror at times. The slow-burn pacing of Zodiac is great at keeping you engaged during its 2-hour-and-37-minute runtime. This movie also offers great character development. The costume design is outstanding, using testimony from Mike Mageau (the only person to survive the Zodiac killer), police reports, and crime scene photos to stay accurate to real-life events. The soundtrack and score are amazing. This film has outstanding, meticulous attention to detail. The set design is great, immersing you in the San Francisco Bay Area. The performances are fantastic, especially from Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., and Jake Gyllenhaal. The story is extremely captivating and well-written, making it one of the most accurate “based on true events” movies ever. This proves that David Fincher is a great director. Remember, the Zodiac killer was never officially caught, so stay watchful—he could be out there right no

Only God Forgives5
Oct 26, 2024
It feels like a bad movie pretending to be a good one. It’s just not a good film. The cinematography is outstanding, with a great use of colors, atmosphere, and score. This film kinda feels repetitive, with the same shots repeating themselves. It also feels very slow and kind of boring. Some of the shots are unironically hilarious. This film really feels like it should be great, but it’s just not.

Seven10
Oct 26, 2024
Man, David Fincher did it again. He crafted another masterpiece. Seven is a fantastic movie and one of my favorite detective movies of all time. The gritty and dark cinematography is excellent. The score is fantastic. This movie is very well written with thought-provoking dialogue and excellent characters. The performances are stellar, especially from Gwyneth Paltrow, Morgan Freeman, and Brad Pitt. The theme is absolutely amazing, that the world is a bad place, but it’s worth fighting for, and it truly resonates with me because I believe the world is a crappy place, but it’s worth fighting for. The plot is extremely smart. The ending was also absolutely perfect. In the end, this movie is a very gripping detective story and keeps you hooked from start to finish. I cannot recommend this movie more, two thumbs up

Revenge9
Oct 26, 2024
I only learned about this movie when I recently watched The Substance. I decided to watch the other movies Coralie Fargeat directed since I loved The Substance, and boy, I did not expect this! Revenge is a badass, thrilling **** movie. The action is fantastic, and the movie features phenomenal practical gore effects, even utilizing five gallons of fake blood for the final shoot-out. The score is amazing, and the movie also has great performances, especially from Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz. All in all, this is a gripping and engaging movie and well worth watching, if you can handle all the blood

The Apprentice7
Oct 26, 2024
Of all the movies that came out in 2024, I didn’t expect there to be a biopic about Donald Trump being a businessman in 1970s New York. That said, the movie was good. The style was great and reminded me of the HBO series Succession. The performances were great, especially by Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong. The story was very compelling and kept me interested in the movie for the most part, even though I did get a little bored. Overall, this is a solid movie worth checking out.

Fight Club10
Oct 26, 2024
I can’t believe it took me this long to finally watch this movie, but oh man, did it live up to the hype. It’s amazing and possibly one of the greatest movies ever made. The themes are profound, exploring anti-consumerism, anti-capitalism, toxic masculinity, and violence. I also feel Tyler is the real villain in Fight Club, leading the narrator into chaos and destruction. The cinematography is outstanding, some of the best I’ve ever seen. The performances are excellent, especially from Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. The set design is great. The script is well-written, with sharp dialogue and engaging characters. The soundtrack is excellent, with perfect song choices. The pacing keeps you hooked, making the 2 hours and 20 minutes fly by. The plot twist is amazing. The editing is razor-sharp and fast-paced. I couldn’t help but notice the subtle gay undertones, especially in the intense bond between Tyler and the Narrator that challenges typical masculinity. The final scene is visually stunning and a haunting reminder of the narrator reclaiming his life from Tyler’s influence, making it a must-watch for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

Inherent Vice10
Oct 26, 2024
This 70’s fueled drug trip of a movie is captivating. The screenplay is fantastic with well written characters based off the novel by Thomas Pynchon. The performances by this all star cast are all great, especially from Joaquin Phoenix Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson. The songs and score featured in this movie are all fantastic and fit the vibe really well. The cinematography captures the hazy and often psychedelic dream-like atmosphere of LA. This movie features a narrative that is out of order but yet draws you in to the mind altering world that Paul Thomas Anderson created. Get ready for a groovy time, when you watch what’s easily now one of my top movies.

Mulholland Dr.9
Oct 26, 2024
What the heck did I even watch? That’s beside the point. I absolutely adored this movie. The themes of this movie really resonate with me because the theme of this movie reflects the same belief I have about Hollywood, where people’s dreams, talent, and creativity are often destroyed by a system driven by profit. That’s my biggest gripe with Hollywood is that it prioritizes profit over artistic integrity. The focus is often on the money rather than allowing filmmakers the creative freedom to shape their vision and direction. That’s why the movie’s theme connected with me and a huge reason why I love this film. Beyond just the theme, there are many other things that make this film so great. The story is mind-bending, complex, and brilliant. The writing is great and really helps everything come together. The performances were great, especially from Billy Ray Cyrus, Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, and Justin Theroux. This movie feels very dreamlike, which is a main characteristic of David Lynch’s films. It’s confusing, but the mystery keeps you hooked. David Lynch leaves a lot open to your own interpretation. It doesn’t really tell a very cohesive story, but it presents concepts that allow you to make your own conclusions, which I think is super artistic and cool. It’s hard to put into words why I love this movie so much, but I really do.

Terrifier 39
Oct 26, 2024
This movie is great. I loved the practical gore effects; the kills were absolutely brutal and insane, especially the shower scene. This movie is also very funny. It’s better than Terrifier 2; more gore, more kills, more plot, more Art the Clown, and more madness. If you have the stomach for it, I highly recommend it.

Joker: Folie à Deux9
Oct 25, 2024
Let’s get something straight: this movie is not for everyone. But for me, I absolutely loved it. I think a lot of people hate this movie because it does the complete opposite of what the first film did. It doesn’t give people what they want a classic Joker story. That’s what the movie is trying to say is that the world doesn’t care about mental health; it cares about spectacle and being entertained. That’s part of the reason Arthur became the Joker. This movie shows us that people only care about the Joker, not Arthur Fleck. People just want to see the Joker being a murderous psychopath, terrorizing Gotham, rather than seeing him heal, recover, and go back to who he was. In my eyes, this movie suggests that the Joker is a personality created by a broken system that doesn’t care about mental health. Harley Quinn’s character symbolizes us, the audience, and how someone’s mental health shouldn’t come at the expense of our entertainment. Harley only loves Arthur because he’s the Joker, which further drives home that point. Now, on to the reason why I actually love this movie so much: the cinematography was outstanding; so many of the shots were beautiful and artistic. I loved the musical elements of this film. All the songs were great, and they made me want to get out of my seat and start dancing. I loved the courtroom scenes; they were gripping and engaging. That said, I can see that there are indeed a lot of flaws in this movie. One issue was the relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn it felt shallow, at times even stupid, and didn’t seem to work well. Another problem was how underutilized Lady Gaga was as Harley Quinn. She could’ve had a much bigger impact in the movie, but overall, her character was poorly written. Lastly, I feel like Todd Phillips made this movie a musical because he hated the incel fans of the first film. I actually enjoyed the ending, as it reinforced the idea that the Joker is more of a personality created by a broken system than a person we should look up to. I absolutely adored this movie and think everyone should give it a chance. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I loved it.
