Mulholland Drive is a haunting, selfish masterpiece that literalizes the theory of surrealism as perpetual dream state.

Watts and Harring even turn out to be the hottest Hollywood couple of 2001. The plot slides along agreeably as a tantalizing mystery before becoming almost completely inexplicable, though no less thrilling, in the closing stretches--but that's what Lynch is famous for. It looks great too.

Taking up the narrative mode of the previous LOST HIGHWAY, the director from Montana takes us for a walkbetween dream and reality, between present fiction and possible futures, confusing and playing with the characters.A thousand explanations and meanings have been given about the story, but what remains is a colorful thrillerAbsolutely brilliant noir. The scene of the "Silencio" theater is legendary.Naomi Watts' interpretation is absolutely extraordinary, truly fantastic, and Laura Herring's,excellent in the role of femme fatale.Masterpiece

A genuinely ominous and suspenseful thriller.

The movie, at two and a half hours, retains much of the unhurried suspense -- the careful cultivating of our patience, of our narrative loyalty -- that is bred by the best TV.

An intriguingly mysterious, self-reflexive ode to the dream factory, it's one of Lynch's most satisfying films.
75
It will frustrate viewers who like stories to make instant sense, but fans of provocative puzzles will have mind-teasing fun.

Lynch needs to renew himself with an influx of the deep feeling he has for people, for outcasts, and lay off the cretins and hobgoblins and zombies for a while. Mulholland Drive is the product of David Lynch, Inc.

David Lynch's thought-provoking and erotic thriller is one of the true masterpieces of the 21st century. A hypnotic, dream-like experience that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

+Fantastic cast
+Some arresting cinematography (at times)
+Interesting soundscape
-If you're here for a screenplay that is intelligible, please walk away now
-Frankly abusive LFE channel in surround mix
-Absolute abuse of the extreme close up tight camera shot MD is an at times fascinating piece of filmwork like a visual poem with some high quality stylistic choices resulting (when at its best) in evocative moments with some of these provocative highs and lows providing a dream like quality. In almost the same moment this can quickly becomes cheap provocation for its own sake falling into a lo fi style of experimental ****. Overall i felt like there could've been something much better than what we got if the project focused under a lense that wasnt so abstract. For a film shot in the late 90's it has aged terribly. Overall it is clear this was an artist's mad dream laid bare to experience so if thats your jam - you will LOVE this.

Mulholland Drive is a simple suspense story which is shown in different way. Director used a few cheap thrill tricks to make the story confusing and the tricks worked. I am still trying to figure the climax and will probably have to see it again to catch things I missed and which may help me understand it better. It is a very detailed plot that very slowly comes together. Editing work was great, jumping back and forth between scenes was done properly. Combined with smart use of music and sounds, it all helps to build suspense in our minds. This movie demands alot of patience as you are seeing 2hr 30min dead serious drama. This is where main problem lies. Movie is so slow paced with dead serious plot and you might start getting frustrated and may loose patience. Overall, it is movie which everyone might not love watching. Some will love it, some will hate it. This movie demands audience which love dead serious crap.

I hated this movie. Now before everyone sends me off to the gallows I'd like to make a few things clear. I'm a very introspective filmgoer. My favorite movie's Inception. I also liked 12 Monkeys and with some effort was able to adequately follow it. Oh, I almost forgot how much I like The Usual Suspects. My point is I like densely plotted movies. I like thick atmosphere, and I enjoy cerebral concepts. Muholland Dr. though is in my opinion just pointless crap. The acting is for some reason purposefully unconvincing. I don't care if Lynch was making a statement about the insincerity of Hollywood, it just doesn't work. It also makes no sense. I'll admit that I fast forwarded a little once I got about an hour or so in, but I just couldn't take it. I couldn't grasp what was going on about 90% of the time. It tries so hard to be confusing and surreal that it becomes almost gag inducing. If it's all supposed to be a dream with no logic or rules to follow than at least make it interesting! This is in my opinion extremely pretentious trash. Sometimes it's moody and it's well shot, but it's not worth it. Will I ever see it again and change my opinions? I don't know, but rest assured that it won't be any time soon.
