Resident Evil 2

While I can often be generous scoring a mediocre game, I rarely if ever call a game a 10. It takes a special experience to achieve that score. Resident Evil 2 for PS4 provides that experience. I played the original Resident Evil 2 when it first released during my college days, and I liked it a lot. I was excited for this remake, but I figured I would already know what was going to happen. Boy, was I wrong. Capcom has completely rewritten the events that happen in the game, and even if you have played the original dozens of times, you won't know whats coming in this new version. The quality of the gameplay is really mind blowing. The combat feels perfect, and the movement is smooth and silky. The graphics are outstanding, and do an excellent job conveying a sense of dread as you play. The sound is fantastic and adds so much to the creepiness. The music is extremely sparingly used, and what is there, is ambient and in the background. The only time it picks up is during certain scenes I won't describe for fear of spoiling something. If there is other music that I didn't notice, it's because it's so perfectly blended into the game. Speaking of spoiling, I highly recommend you go into this game blind if you can. The moments that shocked me would have had much less impact if I knew they were coming. If you are a fan of horror games, then this is a must buy. If you are a fan of games in general, I highly suggest you give it a shot. There are very few modern survival horror games of this type that receive the universal acclaim this game has received. If you have never played a survival horror game, this is a perfect entry into the genre. Capcom has provided 3 difficulty modes to fit every gamer. Hardcore for the survival horror experts, Standard, for those comfortable with shooters of this nature, and Assisted for those completely new to the genre, or for those who have difficulty aiming with a controller. If survival horror games intimidate you, there is no shame on giving it a go on an easier difficulty. It's such a great game, it would be a shame for someone to miss out on it. I can't recommend a game more highly than I recommend this one. Go out and play it!

I love Sonic games. Even the ones that get bad reviews, I tend to still have fun playing. With this being said, this game does have some problems. The big one is the framerate. When you enter high speed sections, the graphics tend to get choppy, which can unfortunately have an effect on the gameplay. It's not unplayable, but it is a major problem. Other than the framerate, some of the levels can drag on a bit, as you run around hitting buttons to move forward. I had fun playing this game, but it's far from perfect. I enjoyed the combat, and the story interactions are entertaining. If you are a Sonic fan like I am, then you might enjoy this game, but if you aren't you will probably want to give it a pass. If you are looking for a Wii U Sonic game, I highly recommend Sonic Lost World. It's a more traditional 3D Sonic game, and it runs smoothly without graphical hiccups.

I have a weakness for cute things, and Yono and the Celestial Elephants is an extremely cute game. Everything from the art style to the sound design is adorable. I just beat this game today, and I had a great time playing it. It's not a difficult game, although one or two of the puzzles took did take me a few tries to figure out. The combat is fairly basic, but it is serviceable, and not difficult. The story is well written, telling a tale of love, war and life. For the price, I think the game is the perfect length. It took me maybe 4 or 5 hours to complete, and the ending left me satisfied. I did encounter one bug where if I rammed the wall in a certain place, Yono would fly up into the air! It was in no way game breaking, and considering this is an indie game from a small studio, I found it to be very well put together. If you are looking for a relaxing puzzle platformer, then you will probably enjoy Yono. I hope they make a sequel, as I would pick it up in an instant.

I was bummed when ZombiU was released for the WiiU. I love horror games, and I was disappointed it was an exclusive. Imagine my surprise when it was released on PS4! Even though I love playing horror games, I am quite a chicken, and play these games very slowly and deliberately, taking my time as I go through the levels. I'm really having fun with Zombi, and I do find the game quite scary. The noises that the zombies make are disturbing, and the game is fairly gruesome, with zombie heads exploding with your attacks. The game has a form of permadeath, where if you die, you don't load from a previous save to try again. Instead what happens is you take control of a new survivor, and you must find your previous character (who is now a zombie), and kill him or her to get your equipment back. It makes for some tense moments, because when you respawn, you are only equipped with minimal equipment to take on the enemies. As fun as the game is, it's not perfect. It's easy to get overwhelmed during certain points in the game when you are attacked by a large horde of zombies, and there is one section of the game in particular I found quite annoying. Thankfully, it didn't last long, and I was on to a more enjoyable part of the game in short order. The graphics are not amazing, but they get the job done. I will say, I'm not a person who puts a lot of importance on graphics. As long as they are decent, I'm happy. I don't believe every game needs to be the next Crysis. So in short, Zombi is a fun horror game that I recommend highly to fans of the genre!

Hollow (2017)

I think Hollow is the perfect example **** that can divide opinions. It's a horror game about a guy exploring a ship going through a bit of a crisis. It's not a perfect game, and while I was turned off the first 10 or 15 minutes I started playing it, I eventually got used to the mechanics and ended up enjoying it. The biggest con in my book is that the movement is slow. You can click the left analog stick to run, and by run, I mean move at a decent walking pace. Thankfully, you can "run" indefinitely, although when the main character speaks, the speed reverts to "slow as a crawl" until the dialog is completed. Also, they use a lot of screen effects that while sometimes cool, can also be a bit distracting, and overdone. Unlike most indie horror titles, you actually can fight back in this game, and that is a big plus for me. Yes, ammo is limited, but a well placed headshot will take out the more common enemies. Aiming to get that headshot is a bit clunky, and definitely takes some getting used to. Really, that's the main thing I experienced with this game, and it is also why I liked it the longer I played it. Once you get good at managing the movement, and combat, Hollow can be an enjoyable game. I heard that the game suffered framerate dips for some people, but I didn't have any (in docked or handheld mode), and if they did happen, I didn't notice them. I will state the disclaimer that I have no problem with games that run at 30FPS, So maybe that has something to do with how I perceived the experience. All in all, Hollow is an OK horror game for the Switch, and if you have already played Resident Evil Revelations, and are looking for another horror game where you don't have to constantly run and hide, maybe check this one out. In full disclosure, I picked this game up for under $10 during a sale, and I feel like I got my moneys worth. At it's full price of $20, it's a much harder sell.

LEGO City Undercover

I really enjoyed my time playing Lego City Undercover. It feels like GTA and the Lego video game franchise had a baby. There is an open world to explore, and the landscape is loaded with collectibles. It's slightly different than other Lego games in that you only play as one character, but that character has many different disguises, each with it's own set of abilities. Also, since you are a police officer, you have a few gadgets to use to help you solve crimes and catch the bad guys. From a scanner that lets you ID criminals, to a grappling hook that helps you scale tall buildings, there are some really fun mechanics in this game. In addition to the new mechanics, the old Lego standby of smashing legos and rebuilding them into something useful has returned. There is something cathartic about smashing things to pieces and collecting the legos that fly all over the place! Since it's an open world, they needed to give us ways to get around, and it's a great feeling hopping in a car and exploring the city. If you would rather not drive, you can always hail a taxi to get to your destination. The Lego humor is here, and I found myself smiling frequently during my time with this game. I was impressed at how they managed to include overt jokes for children, with subtle references and jokes aimed at adults as well. Before buying this game, I had read some reviews that complained about performance, but I haven't noticed any large hiccups as of yet, and I have played quite a bit. It it supposed to be worst during co-op play, but I haven't had a chance to play co-op so I can't comment on that. The other complaint I read about was the load times. Yes, there are loading screens that appear, but they aren't terribly long. They mostly tend to occur when you enter one of the story missions. This is because many of the missions take place in separate instances designed specifically for that mission. When I was tackling the missions that take place in the open world city, I did not see a load screen beforehand. All in all, Lego City Undercover is a great addition to the Switch library, and if you are a fan of the series, you will have a blast playing it. At the current price, you really can't go wrong!

I love horror games. I'm a big fan of Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and The Evil Within. I didn't think I would find Layers of Fear scary for one big reason, you can't die. I figured if you took away the threat of death, you would take away what's fear inducing about a video game. I was wrong. Through excellent pacing, mind bending psychological effects, and wonderful sound design, Layers of Fear managed to scare the heck out of me. In fact, I had to take frequent breaks during my time with the game. I made sure to play with headphones and in a darkened room for maximum effect. Even in portable mode, this game unnerved me. If you are into horror games, I highly recommend picking this game up! It's excellent value for the money, and a great way to get your horror fix on the go!

Sonic Forces isn't the tragedy that many people make it out to be. It is a competently made game, and it offers a lot of variety in the gameplay department. Is it my favorite Sonic game of all time? No, but it is enjoyable and a good addition to the Switch library. It feels like an amalgamation of a few previous Sonic games. Sometimes the switch from one playstyle to the next can be jarring, but it keeps the game from feeling stale and overstaying it's welcome. Considering the game is only $40, I think it's a good value. While it isn't the masterpiece Sonic fans expect every time a new Sonic game is announced, it is still definitely worth a look.

The fact that I am playing the LA Noire remaster on a portable system is mind blowing to me. I bought the game originally when it first came out for Xbox 360 and I really enjoyed playing it then. I am having just as much fun now, only I can play it anywhere! I have been consistently impressed by the prowess of the Switch, and LA Noire hasn't let me down. If you are into detective games or novels, this game will be right up your alley. In addition to the main story, there are about 40 side missions that keep the game feeling fresh. They have also added in optional touch controls, but the game does not force you to use them. The story is excellent, and the characters are believable and likable. If you haven't played this game already then it is a no brainer to pick it up, but if you played it when it first came out (like I did) you can still get a lot of enjoyment out of this title. Like Zelda and Mario Odyssey, this is a console quality game on a portable system, and is a blast to play!
