Hollow Knight was my first proper experience with a Metroidvania and I gotta say this game is amazing. From the gorgeous art style to the stellar movement and combat, it all came together to create one hell of an experience. I did find myself getting frustrated at time by the combat but that was more of a skill issue on my part. No feeling comes close to losing to a boss over and over again only to finally beat their ass. The one criticism I do have is the way the story was portrayed. I wish some parts were a bit more clearer and less vague. I get that the devs were trying to create some intrigue but at some point I had clocked out of trying to make sense of the story. I’d like to get some semblance of what's going on without having to watch a 3 hour you tube essay that's filled with guesswork. All in all, I sunk in around 80ish hours and had a blast. 9/10 way too many bugs.
This game is like that one drama or telenovela that's going on in the living room. Don't care too much about it, just passing through but I'm stood at the door, eyes glued on the TV completely enthralled wondering what will happen next. The team at Adhoc did an amazing job at writing for this game. The characters are so well written and dialogue between them is so so good. They had me loving a charter, then hating them and do a full 180 back to loving them again. The only downside is the voice actors. They do a great job don’t get me wrong, but a few of them pull me out of the game every time they speak. Another gripe I have isn’t something about this game in particular, but the type of game as a whole. I enjoyed the actual “video game” portions but I felt like there could have been more actual gaming segments and that they would have had more of an impact the story. Even the actual choices you make have very little impact on the story, but it is what it is. Despite my gripes, this game is still phenomenal, would recommend anyone to try it out. FYMTBYBF 10/10
This game captures the feeling of Kavinsky’s “outrun” album. Those late night drive vibes are what kept me engaged even if the story wasn't all that. The game loop of searching for materials to upgrade and maintain this anomalous car kept me engaged for a solid while. Towards the end of the tech tree though, it gets a bit too grindy for my liking. I wish the upgrades were paced a bit better to match the story too. Taking about the story, it’s a mess. Start to finish, there's nothing there to keep you engaged. Your just aimlessly following some voices on a radio, that never leads to a meaningful conclusion. Had such potential with the setting and the anomalous nature of the car. Never leads to anything. Last thing I’ll say is, the music on the radio slaps, bunch of indie small name artists that belt banger while you drive around the zone. Few of those tunes definite have a spot on my playlist. 5/10 Kinda a fan of this “Hybrid Automobile”
Interesting game with some complex ideas. Unfortunately, it dose not stick the landing. Characters are very one note and don't really help evolve or examine the issues that the game is trying to tackle. 4/10, Too big a bite of the pie :(
One of the only JRPG that I actually enjoyed.. or is it more of an FRPG? Either way, its an amazing well written masterpiece with such a moving soundtrack and a gorgeous belle Époque art style. It’s got a story that pull at your heartstrings and takes what seems to be a basic tale of vengeance to a whole other level. Alongside an ensemble of some of the best written and acted characters I have seen in a long time. The gameplay is not something I thought I would gel with. I don’t mind turn based combat but having to make builds and do math is not my strong suite. I definitely stuck with it and got a hang of it, but if it wasn’t for the stellar story I probably would have dropped it like all the other JRPGs I’ve tried. I cannot explain in words just how “Incroyable” the games narration is and am beyond ecstatic that I give this game a go. To think I could have missed one of the most influential games of the year all because I’m afraid of a few numbers. 10/10 The French really pulled this one off.
Hades II improves upon its predecessor in almost every way possible. Supergiant Games (SGG) has really pushed the envelope in terms of the rogue-like genre. They have build a finely crafted experience that surpasses hades 1. The gameplay is more fun and engaging, the combat is more enjoyable and has an added depth to it and the visuals and art is breathtakingly beautiful. However I did say that they improved in *almost* every way. The one part that I myself and other players really felt let down was the narrative. I feel they wanted to make the game more ambitions and more narratively complex but ended up biting more than they could chew, tripping over the final hurdle and not delivering a great ending to an already amazing game. I am normally not a roguelike or roguelite enjoyer. To me, losing all of my progress after fighting to create a fun build, is not that fun. The knowledge of knowing that weather I win or lose, I am going to give up what makes my build fun, makes me not enjoy these types of games. The one thing that does keep me interested in Hades II has to be the narrative. The way SGG weave in their narrative and story telling into every reset and failure circumvents my feeling of annoyance and despair when losing my gear in a run. Now I find myself wanting to lose a run to a creation boss or enemy just to see what unique dialogue I would get from my companions and the boss themselves. This narrative structure is why I enjoyed Hades 1 so much and why I wanted to enjoy this game too. The story and narrative is well written and enjoyable for the most part. The cast of characters are fun and memorable, and SGG’s rendition of the Greek pantheon is a delight. Its just that when it comes to the ending, It felt rushed and cobbled together. I understand that a story about killing time itself can be a difficult one to get right. I feel the way that SGG did it really wasn’t what I had hoped for. Even after being disappointed by the true ending, I pushed on to try and see if the epilogue would somewhat alleviate my disappointment, I was met with a shocking revelation that would have been more suited for the true ending and in my opinion could have been used to great effect in actually fixing the ending instead of having it locked being an arbitrary mission. Despite all my issues with the story's finale, I enjoyed my 100 hours in Hades II. All in all it took me 28 runs to kill Time for the first time, 32 to beat the boss on Olympus, 50 runs to get the true ending and 81 to get to the epilogue. 9/10 game, Time cannot be stopped.
I did not enjoy my time with undertale. The only positive thing I can say is that the music is banging. It might honestly be a result of having every tune from this game blasted at me in every YouTube video I've ever watched. Its a testament to the quality of the tunes that even after hearing them over and over and over again, I still enjoyed the tracks in this game. Maybe it is a situation where the community has hyped this game up so much to a point where my expectations were astronomically high for a one man made indie game, or the fact that the writing and humour is from a time I want to leave in the past. I'm sure if younger me had picked this game up, he would have had a fun time and have put this as one of his favourites. However I picked it up recently, and the 8 or so hours it took to complete it felt like a slog, and at times, my eye balls were getting tired of the amount of rolling they were doing listing to the dialogue. I don’t mind the art style, the story was passable but the characters really let it down for me. 3/10 I lack the determination to enjoy this, despite how much I really wanted to.
Outer Wilds is an amazing sci -fi adventure game. You play as an alien who is trying to uncover a long lost civilisation but gets caught in a timeloop that ends with your sun going supernova and wiping out the galaxy (or if you die before that.) Outer wilds narrative is truly a one of a kind and its premise and game play is a breath of fresh air. To be honest, I am not on board with all of the ideas at play here, but I am quite happy that the developers were willing to go out of their way to try something new. The main draw of this game has to be it's narrative. The whole mystery around this long dead race, who they are, what they were doing and how it intertwines itself with your story. The narrative works great along with the simulated planets that you explore, their orbits and unique atmospheres. In all honesty I feel like the planets themselves were the main cast of characters in this game , while the actual npcs you meet were bland and boring. The npcs do not react to most of the changes that happen when out in the world and are not that memorable. I really wanted more from them so that the ending of the game felt more impactful. Another thing I have an issue with is the timeloop and the mystery solving. I dislike being rushed while investigating clues or going over details. The loop makes it so that you are rushing through things just to make sure you got it all before the loop resets. Not to mention that some parts of the game are time gated, so you have to wait before you can progress, killing more time and giving you even less time to put together what's going on. By the end of it I was well and truly tired of launching off the home planet to get to my destination to start an investigation. It took me 64 loops, 2 actual deaths and having to restart, and a whole load of patience to complete the game, but I am glad that I did, and recommend this game to all those who want to experience a different way of storytelling. 7/10 would live to see the heat death of the universe again
Good bit of fun, except for the bloody Marauders. Out classes 2016 in every way. I played it in revers order and playing 2016 felt like my legs had been cut off and my hands tied. Eternal is freeing, Eternal is forever. 10/10 **** MARTY FOR WHAT HE DID TO MICK!
Man this game, its got it all. ****' portals, killer robots, not so killer robots, POTATOES and space. -1 tho for the weird cube-bot freaks wheatly puts together. 10/10 masterpiece, like a slice of a well baked cake!
**** game put me in a world of pain. Not a big grindathon fan so the idea of grind for gear to grind for gear then grind for gear to grind for gear... REALLY GRINDED MY GEARS, 2/10
What a game! Characters are unlikable and annoying. The whole traversal and interaction system is clunky and obtrusive making playing the game feel like pulling my own teeth. Then why do I like it? The gorgeous art, the story, the mystery, the ancient forgotten language and the entire language system that's been created to try and decipher it all! Were is not for the fact that this game's story had sunk its teeth into me, I would've left it as another half played steam gamer in a pile of unfinished games, but if its in that library of yours, give it a chance 7/10, shut it clanker
Amazing stealth game with a so-so story. Fun and engaging stealth mechanics that work really well with the magic abilities, and obv rat go brrrrt. Only gripe is that I can kill some of the highest ranking officials in game non lethal but can't non lethal the tall boys, C'mon. Arkane use to make bangers but got **** over, 8/10
Hellblade really makes you feel like you have a bit of psychosis! Fair play to ninjatheory, made me uncomfortable throughout the whole bloody game. I can finally turn off the voices. ...........well until the sequel releases anyways. 8/10 shut up shUT UP ShUT UPPP
Div 2 is a massive game with a combat system that boasts a high skill ceiling.--I would've enjoyed it more if I could count past 10, but these numbers just keep getting bigger and bigger. --The story is interesting but feels like it runs on a bit longer than it should. --The characters are a mixed bag, some are memorable and others are just forgettable. --Still a fun game w cool mechanics and a neat elemental system. 6/10 would kill squirrel boi again
Such a sweet looking game with a bitter ending. and not once did we get to use the Osborne firefinder ffs. Hope you rot in hell big N ya ****. 7/10 IT BUUURNSSS
I love this factory game. Once it got its teeth into me I was hooked. The fact that it had a story element alongside the factory building was a fun addition and a nice change of pace. I enjoyed my time building inefficient factories and layers of spaghetti. Such a shame with the story though, massive let down and quite anti climactic. 7/10 would pipe again
Prey is a fun lille sci fi romp in space. I enjoyed playing through the story and had fun messing around the space station. Love the enemy designs and there was a few different varieties. Would have loved to see more enemy types, late game kinda feels like fighting the same lot and gets boring. Mimics were the most fun to run into, they reminded me of the og half life headcrab jump scares. All in all fun game, ending was a "eugh really" moment 7/10 mimics
Chants of Sennaar is an enjoyable little indie linguistic puzzle game. I enjoy language puzzles. After finishing "Heaven's Vault" (another language puzzle game, made by INKLE) I wanted more and this scratched the itch. It's nothing fancy, just a point and click adventure where you are piecing together a bunch of languages. It puzzles are engaging and I had fun putting together words and their meaning even though I was wrong most of the time. Probably okay for a play though but then the novelty wears off. 6/10, **** the stealth sections
The only positive thing I can say about this game is that the art was top notch. Rest of the game just wasn't that fun. Played through the whole campaign and the card system, base setup and two factions really didn't make for a fun experience. I can't even remember what the name for both races were or what anybody's name was and I'm only after finishing the game. Just an unforgettable story with frustrating game mechanics that I did not enjoy. 2/10 wouldn't hymn again :(
What a game! Disappointed that I didn't get on board when it first released. Suppose that ship has sailed. Amazing little detective indie game. What's there left say when everyone been going on about this game like mad. Get it, feels stupid not knowing what's going on, make some guessing, watch things fall into place and feel that rush when you hear that gahdamn violin. 10 out fckn 10, didn't pull up a single guide. PS: IT WAS THE CAPTAIN - HE KILLED THEM ALLLLL
THIS GAME IS ART! ART IS SUBJECTIVE! MY SUBJECTIVE OPINION IS THAT I AM DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS GAME. It started off as a fun puzzle game that had me scribbling in a notepad looking for clues having a blast and devolved into a mess of puzzles within puzzles within puzzles, confusing layout, overabundance of nothing art and overall very meaningless progression. I had to pull out a guide at around 70% and was still lost and frustrated. I love puzzles.... I hate puzzles that call themselves art. MF pick a lane. Now when I get frustrated and hate the puzzles I'm gonna hate the art too. I was looking to forgive all that, put my differences aside if the ending at least ... at least did SOMETHING! Instead it was an ending I had guessed well on in the early game and everything leading up to is was a waste of time. 3/10 laser my eyes out of my skull.
Top tier doom game. Amazing video game that sets up the sequel perfectly. This new iteration of the OG doom paved the way for the modern doom games, with its fast paced, fast moving, quick thinking combat. A lot of people were critical of the story but like c'mon its a Doom game. The story is serviceable and doesn't overstay its welcome. 10/10 would doot again
Wanderstop is a cosy tea making, tea drinking game with a few little elements of farming and a handful of customers to make tea for. The main loop of the game is just make tea for yourself and drink it all in. Also shout out C418 you're as beautiful as a the day I lost you. For some, this game is an allegory for burnout and a lot of people seem to resonate with the main character and her struggles. I was one of the few who didn't get it. If anything i found myself relating to the owner of the tea shop. A man who is carefree, relax and enjoys the little things. I couldn't understand why the main character was having such a rough time with just relaxing and having a cup of tea. Likewise, a majority people have said that the game play is quite boring and there is not much going on. I felt the complete opposite. The boring loop was somewhat relaxing to me. grow crops, make tea, have a chat, sit down and have a drink. Its what I enjoy IRL to get away from the busy going ons of everyday life. Despite me not really liking the main character, I found myself rooting for her when she went for a break, stepped back and took a moment to relax. Some parts of the story were a bit "eh" but at the end I was happy with how her character turned out. 9/10 Would brew again -1 because of the stupid part of the game where you: START MAKING COFFEE LIKE WTF THIS IS A TEA MAKING GAME GET THAT STUPID BEAN **** OUTTA HERE
Dishonored 2 is a great upgrade to the original game. It build upon the stellar stealth mechanics and adds a whole slew of new powers and upgrades that compliment the game. Arcane Studio's world and level design is some of the best out there. Despite it being a very linear game, they did an amazing job making each mission feel open ended and alloying you to play through the game in whatever way you want. The main highlight of the game IS the level design! the standout ones have to be I Loved it! The story however... its just bleh. Serviceable sure but definitely didn't grip me as much as the first game. It doesn't need to be amazing, but for a team Like Arcane.... I expected a bit more. 8/10 bring back old outsider
Why play this when you can have fun playing Dishonored 1 or 2? Its a half baked dlc missing a lot of the things that made the first 2 games so much fun for me. Like the chaos system, the powers and a story that coherent and doesn't retcon a bunch of important details. I spent ages on one of the missions in game stealing and trying to beat it without a kill only to realise that the target couldn't be disposed of like all of the targets in the last game... I could only kill them. Stripping away the fun choices and not having a chaos system just had me jumping around stabbing people knowing that none of it matters. Could I still do most of the missions in stealth..... of course, but why would i do that when there's almost no difference in the story. 4/10 Rip dooooooooooooood
Amazing video game with top notch writing and a gorgeous art style. Captivating detective story with a whole load of interesting twists and turns, god tier writing and an amazing mix of DnD style dice rolling with a point and click adventure. Playing as an amnesiac and trying to sole two cases at once was a great premise and as the story kept going I became ever more immersed. It wasn't all sunshine and tequila sunset with this game though. Despite all the top tier writing, amazing dialogue and voice acting.. I have to say some of the line just felt padded. Like a high school kid trying to fill out the words needed for an essay. Conversations seemed like they would go on and on and I would have a hard time discerning credible information from the dressing. It's a game that demands your attention at all times and sometimes I don't want to be dialled in. TL/DR: Peak game but I'm too stupid to get it 7/10 This is death. One more door, baby. One more door.
Mech and guns, Guns and mechs. Good fun. The multiplayer is fun too but I got like a game or two so not much experience there...I see why people want a Titanfall 3 6/10 Rip Big Turd
I get it, I see why people have been talking about this bloody game since 2007. I was 7 years old when the original came out and it has taken me 18 years to get around to it. If I had played this back in 2007, I'd be singing its praises and calling it the best game of all time. The story is amazing, kept me hooked, the world design, environmental storytelling is top tier and the gameplay is still enjoyable after all these years. The things is, I have been spoilt. Spoilt rotten. I would give it full marks for 2007, but there's a few things I didn't enjoy. I wished that there were more consequences for your action, I wish that the lore was a part of the story more and not just tapes lying around, and I wish that some of the fights were more creative. Either way banger games so if you would kindly, have a 7/10
