Pathologic 29
Dec 15, 2020
Behind its insufferable gameplay, Pathologic 2 hides a deep universe with carefully written dialogue and incredible world design. It's mesmerizing the amount of thought that Ice-Pick Lodge put into their world, and the risks they took to make the world into fruition. Everything is coherent, from the way you move around the map to the unforgivable survival mechanics. This game is depressing, and proud of it. The only reason it doesn't get a 10 from me is the fact that this game runs really ROUGH on the Xbox One. I have a pretty high tolerance for bugs and glitches and don't like to let technicalities influence my reviews, but I feel like it wouldn't be a fair review without mentioning these issues. I get that this is a tiny studio we're talking about, but I have to say that seeing a loading screen every time I walk like 20 steps really breaks the immersion that the rest of the game works so hard to maintain. I even debated giving it an 8 just for these issues. Incredible game. It's probably more entertaining to just read about it online or watch other people play it though

Fractured Minds6

Fractured Minds is fun, but very forgettable. While I did enjoy the metalinguistical aspect of the narration, it ultimately made the game very vague to have any impactful meaning, in my opinion. I get that the point was that you could relate to this game no matter what kind of mental struggle you went through, but I would think the game would benefit from a more direct story. With that being said,I understand this game was made by only one developer, and considering that, I think she did a pretty good job, especially considering her age. For her first game, this thing is very solid, and has a message worth spreading. Ultimately, the game will only take you 20-30 minutes to beat, and I recommend you check it out. For what it is, I found it to be enjoyable.

Short and fun. This game, with its easy controls and well-designed gameplay will take you on a short journey where you're the jerk that wreaks havoc in town. The art style and the music really sold the atmosphere and it left me with a smile on my face. :)

Resident Evil 7: biohazard9

Great game. This is truly a survival horror made for the contemporary age. The ambiance is impeccable from start to finish. Even if you manage your inventory very carefully and taking advantage of every single weapon at your disposal, you'll still feel like you're at a disadvantage with the world. Also, I really enjoyed the perspective shift in the story. Initially, you're just a guy exploring a creepy house, but as the story progresses, you end up uncovering the layers behind this horrible situation you put yourself into. It goes from micro to macro, which is something that you don't really see in games these days.

Night Call9

I enjoyed this game a lot! It's moody, delicate and challenging. The overall tone is very well done. Sometimes, you have encounters with strangers that fill your spirit. Other times, you just want them to leave your car immediately. You can tell the developers put in a lot of effort to make the conversations interesting and, for the most part, it really paid off. Also, as someone who has been in Paris myself, the parisian spirit is very well represented in the story. As for the investigative part, I loved it. The three cases are instigating and, it takes a real detective spirit to figure out who is the guilty suspect. You have to pay a lot of attention to the world around you and search for as many clues as you can. It's challenging, but not to the point that it's super unfair. Very fun. Would recommend it to anyone who like detective media and intriguing stories.

Watch Dogs: Legion8

I must admit that, when Ubisoft first presented the "recruit anyone" mechanic, I was a bit fearful that it was too ambitious to be true. But this game exceeded my skeptic expectations. It's an innovative, enjoyable open-world action game, with an interesting, although messy, story. While I do wish that the recruitment mechanic brought a more personal taste, where I feel like I have my own team and its members interact in their own unique way, I'm still impressed with the variety of characters the developers were able to include. I understand that this is the first entry to try something like this, and I'm very excited to see where it goes next. After all, Ubisoft does have a history of expanding on their concepts as the series progresses.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey10

Perhaps the best AC ever made. It is unquestionable now that the revision of the AC formula first presented to us in AC Origins has refreshed the gameplay and given Ubisoft a clearer direction of where this series should go next. When I first played Origins, I generally enjoyed the much needed changes to combat and character progression. However, I did feel like the game didn't really take advantage of those changes, as the way that the protagonist interacted with the world still seemed pretty basic to me. Odyssey, however is a whole other story. It takes Origins' gameplay and brings it to a new, lively world, where mercenaries want your head and you're caught in the fire of a bloody war between two powerful armies. Initially, you're only a misthios looking for wealth, but you soon come across a secret organization, who secretly dominate greek politics. A classic AC tale, which we have seen before, but the new cult hunting mechanic makes this chase much more personal. In some ways, I feel like this is what the developers of the first Assassin's Creed wanted their game to be. A good story, great RPG mechanics for you to find your play style, big world with interesting locations, gorgeus sights to behold and DLC content that feels like it could very well be an entirely new game. I'd definetely recommend this to lovers of the time period the game is set in and people who like action RPGs. I'm 150+ hours in, determined to get all the achievements and, while I do think that I have a well-grounded knowledge of the gameplay and missions structures, every new tweak in my skill set brings with it a new discovery about how I want to play this game.
