Palm Royale

As more characters help expand the universe, it’s as if the pacing issues are gone and have now evolved into something richer: a study of how people rebuild after the masks crack. It’s this aspect that helps the sharper humor hit harder while grounding the emotional stakes. Never missing a beat on its comedy and heart, Palm Royale is proof that when the claws come out, so does the show’s best self.

“Palm Royale” is above all Wiig’s show, and she is terrific and genuine, alive in her role from moment to moment. It’s a complex performance, funny and painful and endearing, shot through with hope and fear, sass and sadness. .... But even characters who in a lesser piece would be frozen into caricatures are granted some depth and fluidity, which helps sustain the series over 10 episodes.

It’s still annoying to watch an entire season of TV and feel absolutely zero closure for every minute twist and head-spinning plot that just unraveled over 10 hour-long episodes. But even in its flaws, Palm Royale is still a hell of a good time, and a sudsy, campy series to carry us through the spring TV season.

Wiig fanatics will find much to admire in Palm Royale, which is every bit as indulgent and lavish as the lives of its characters. But what Palm Royale lacks, compared to the very best dynastic battles, is the ability to make the drama about more than just the internecine wranglings of a privileged minority.

If the show were funnier, all the grasping wouldn't be so dispiriting. But again, the series may not be a comedy.

Palm Royale is a show about the dangers of excess, but it doesn’t practice what it preaches. Beautiful gowns, though.

The problem is that very little of it lands. With the exception of Dern (as a feminist trying to discourage Maxine from becoming one of the Stepford Wives) and Martin (as an employee of the titular club who is wise to Maxine’s game long before everyone else), everyone is playing a cartoon, and giving a performance to match.

Colorful, fresh and fun. Fun And spicy in theright amount. It’s a little “desperate housewives ish” which I loved it. It’s been a while we see a show with the right amount of comedy, drama and fashion

Great first couple episodes. High production quality and genuinely interesting characters. Nice to see Kristen wig in a different light. strong start for sure

There is an excellent cast that’s being wasted in this dreck. We’ve stopped watching after three episodes because it’s uncomfortably annoying. There’s stereotypes that they could have had fun with, but there’s no humor to be had. It’s absurd, but deathly serious, like they wanted to play it for laughs but didn’t know how.

What a horrible second season, my god. I've only watched garbage like this with The Idol and The Acolyte. Rick Martin is such a bad actor. After a very enjoyable, light, and funny first season, this second season shouldn't even have existed as it turned out. The only thing I found interesting in season 2 were the costumes and sets, AND THAT'S IT. The dialogues was mediocres and low-level, full of swear words, very different from the first season. Apple TV should have canceled it after the first season. This is the first series that truly disappointed me on Apple TV, which has always valued the quality of its products. Dear Apple TV, for the love of god, cancel this awful series. Thank you.

It might be time to figure out how much Apple is paying the Emmy people to shell out 11 nominations to this drivel. 51 year-old Wiig is cast as a young, enthusiastic social climber - in the 1960s no less, a time when women were married and living in suburbs by the age of 18. Even a 30 year-old would have been miscast in a 1960s setting, much less a 51 year-old. So that alone ruins any of the cuteness and novelty that you might find hope in for the first couple of episodes. The series slowly devolves into ridiculous scenarios and horrible acting by Ricky Martin. Wiig is a great talent, but she's horribly miscast in this series and falls flat at every turn. It looks less comical and amusing and more sad that a women in the twilight of life (by 60s standards) is still trying to climb the social ladder. Carol Burnnet was a treat to see, she's a lovely woman and so so funny, I'm glad she was cast in something like this, but the show overall falls flat and looks like a skin from White Lotus, just without the realism, comedy, and great acting. So let's finish this up with this: If this drivel could be nominated for 11 Emmy awards, do Emmy awards even mean anything anymore? Nope.
