Quibbles aside there's no denying that Inside Man is engaging television, and having seen further episodes beyond the series opener, that doesn't let up. In fact, as things progress and the story becomes more clearly defined, it's very much to the series' benefit. Episode 2 feels like a step up and is well worth sticking around for, even if you're unconvinced by the first.

Inside Man is typical Moffat fare. Rollickingly confident, meaty, funny, clever (if not quite as clever, on a line by line basis, as it appears).

When war breaks out in 1914 Germany, a student (Felix Kammerer) and his friends eagerly enlist. His experiences in the muddy trenches and scorched fields slowly erode his enthusiasm, as he comes to grips with the realities of combat. Other than one gripping scene near the end (he kills a French soldier) much of the bloody devastation lacks impact. There are some impressively staged sequences full of fire and death, but even the strewn about mangled bodies lose their impact. Anyone who saw 1917 (my review) has pretty much seen this movie from a different POV. However, 1917 was much more effective in painting the horrors of war and its effects on the soldiers.

David Tennant's performance was amazing but his character was so stupid that it ruined the whole show.

This arch meditation on human beings' capacity to kill is audacious, clever and at times frustrating because things are often too daft even for knockabout noir. However, it's worth it if only for the beautifully contained performance of Stanley Tucci as the charismatic "death row detective" Jefferson Grieff.

Inside Man’s central scenario is unsatisfyingly confected. ... With likeable performances and quippy characters, Inside Man is a weeknight crowd pleaser. Just don’t expect the moral depth, or proficient plotting, of some of its rivals in the emergent “men making mistake after mistake” genre.

The strands are convoluted and little appears to make much sense – there is rather a lot of trust required of the viewer that master TV showrunner Moffat will pull the whole thing off. Thanks to wonderful performances from its four main players, and particularly to Tucci at last back in a creepy, sinister role after a long stretch of playing loveable characters (and stretching pasta in Italian farmhouses), it is watchable enough for me to commit to the next three episodes to find out if he can.

It’s all patently ridiculous. If it were ridiculous in an entertaining way, that would be one thing. But Tennant’s side of the story is just so insane that you’ll be too distracted by it to be entertained by Tucci’s side.

The performances are very good, as you'd expect from this cast, but Moffat's writing lets the side down. His dialogue is poorly written and the plotting is ham-fisted. Were this designed to be a dark comedy, I might have enjoyed it, but as it is meant to be a serious drama, it can only be labelled a failure. I was laughing at it, not with it.

Inside Man on paper should have been phenomenal. Instead, The awkward attempts at comedy and stupid character decisions (especially by Tennant's character) just ruin the show IMO.

Another stellar cast for a piece of crap television. Pompous bs lines, huge cliches, like the murderer on death row doing good, the vicar doing bad.. no shyt. Everybody is a murderer, it only takes a motive and a bad day. Sounnds like a **** epiphany after a bottle of vodka. And that's pretty much what it is and the show's qualiy of writing. That's the basis for all religions so nothing new there. Watch any Harlan Coben's adaptatio's instead, at least there's talent there

Within ten minutes you'll be rolling your eyes and wondering why you bother. What has happened to writers these days? The opening sequence is just dripping with every cliché that you've seen writers fall into for the last 5 years and to say it's boringly tiresome would be an understatement. After reading reviews I'm glad I didn't waste my time anymore than I already did.
