Doom Patrol

This is not a seven episode season for anyone who craves convention. At times, the plot sequencing can feel chaotic, lurching. But tonally, Doom Patrol opens up boxes that offer opportunities rarely taken. This is a gift. Having hopped on the trauma exploration train long before its current fever pitch on TV, Doom Patrol gives you the ugliness of characters struggling.

The fourth season of Doom Patrol might be the series’ strongest yet, if only because it’s fully hit its stride and become more comfortable than ever within its incredibly weird little world.

Doom Patrol has learned the lesson that pathos not need require a morose tone. The show is at its finest when these flawed and funny people are allowed to be uproarious even when they’re in pain.

DC Universe rolled the dice with this line, but despite its tongue-in-cheek self-deprecation, it has its first good live-action show--and it’s all thanks to taking risks.

Dressing up the standard superteam tropes with this kind of metafictional framework could get old fast. But a show that gives you a donkey who spells out messages in big green clouds of flatulence gets at least one more week from me.

Doom Patrol’s second episode takes another tour through origin fatigue, sending some characters into hallucinations of their sorrowful past lives. ... The Cyborg subplot takes a detour I legitimately didn’t see coming, and the longer plan for Doom Patrol starts to look quite a bit trickier. The show seems to be trying to recapture the magic Morrison brought to these characters.

Character development and quirkiness can be swell, but the adaptation of this band of heroes spends too much time meandering -- and showing off its geek credentials -- for "Doom" deliver much of a boom.

I love that this show really leans into the weirdest corners of the DC universe. And the cast is amazing.

The first season is great and really leans into a similar style absurdity from the comic(Grant Morrison’s run), but beyond season one misses the point of the absurdity(that it’s absurd for the sake of absurdity). Beyond season 1 it becomes really melodramatic with no real goal or motivation for the characters, not really bad but kind of loses itself in the personal and not at all absurd everyday “i don’t fit in” melodrama. It’s a good show but definitely could be better.

The writing was obnoxiously predictable and dumb. Rolls eyes when the "****" villain "mad scientist" was introduced. Get this folks this guy can give anyone super powers, but doesn't give any to his extensions who are his basically his only defense. They don't even have guns/knives ffs. Yeah I get casting is limited due to Cyborg's cannon identity. That is the best actor they could find for the role? Give the powers to his dad he is a better actor for sure. Show is better (and I use term better very loosely) when Cyborg is not any of the scenes. Got season one boxset as gift. Think I will tap out trade boxset in and move on. Hoping for one good intro season before things turned to crap like Westworld. Nah they jumped straight to default crap mode. This is the crap you have on in the background when you are doing other stuff like watching paint dry or something?

The first season resembles a soap opera aimed at younger boys. Lot's of cursing about feelings and trauma, but in a shallow way that doesn't resonate or ignite the characters. And since there is almost no super hero action, the character development and story arcs drive the show. So, if they work for **** for me, I got tired real fast. Nothing innovative or new, and enormous amounts of repetitive filler disguised as slowly unravelling drama. Wasted cast. How is this show 3 seasons?

Doom patrol had lots of potential but weirdly it has 2 major flaws. it is a super hero show with lots of interesting characters but they rarely ever use any of their powers! Most episodes when you think there will be a super powered battle, the patrol spends most of their time simply staring at the threat. they stumble from one adventure to the next without much cohesion or super powered action. The other flaw (and this is somewhat personal taste) is that too much stuff is unexplained! very weird things simply happen without explanation. SPOILER: eg. the patrol is eaten by giant roach and so kill roach by cutting thru stomach from inside out but now are somehow miniature size when they emerge! I understand the show's theme is outcasts from society trying to find their place and in this sense it is moving but if that is all you want then they could have simply done a show about unpowered handicapped human beings and how they deal with society.
