Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

It’s equal parts outlandish, incoherent, funny, cartoonishly violent and confusing--all in a good way. It’s one of those series in which you just have to kick back and enjoy the ride.

It's dark and funny and appalling and sad and silly, and very much its own thing.

There may be a little more unpacking to do, but Dirk Gently has its own charming weirdness that you either go with or don’t. What’s fun about the story is that every character is obsessed with their own failings and problems while the cosmos keeps playing tricks on them.

The question of whether or not Dirk Gently succeeds as a show for you is unlikely to change with this new season. It remains the frustrating, creative, eccentric show it’s always been.

Those who have devoured the swervy, same-named Douglas Adams books could very well find themselves immensely entertained. Those who haven’t--guilty as charged--at least can admire the energy, cheekiness and slick production values without caring all that much how everything comes out.

Unfortunately, cooked-up and glommed together is what Dirk Gently seems to be serving up. It’s a big dumpster full of ideas and images, some intriguing, others baffling, most rather meh.

All in all, it’s difficult to tell what the goals of this version of Dirk Gently are, given how manic, disorganized and incoherent it is.

I love it! One of the best series I've watched on netflix, I'm so sad that they cancelled it...

After you get past the first two episodes the series is generally ok, The dirk gently character being really annoying is helped by learning that he's basically a not very smart super naive do gooder.

Decent show but the creator (and main writer) has been accused of sexual assault and domestic abuse which colours a lot of the show and its characters differently.

If you enjoyed the books, then be warned that this “adaptation” is nothing of the sort and bears essentially no relation beyond the title. Neither the characters nor the stories could be said to even bear a loose resemblance. I do not know why they even bothered licensing the name.

what the fudge happened? a brilliant almost funny idea literally fell in a deep deep sad disgrace in a matter of an episode? no wonder why they have cancelled the series. discrete casting, nice locations all destroyed, irreparably. forever. noticed the unbelievable performance of Bart and Amanda, in real life, Fiona Dourif and Hannah Marks, both really, really, really talented.
