Casual remains very funny, but it has also become even more sophisticated in the third season.

For those of you sporting an anything-but-casual obsession with Hulu’s delightful and insightful comedy series, let me tell you this about Season 3: It only gets better.

Casual upgrades into a journey through its characters' frailties and still keeps doing a marvelous job with the humor, but sometimes it sunks so deep into the drama that makes us unattached to its story.

Casual is a well-made series, with an impeccable cast, and solid writing. Yet, with each passing season, I'm having an increasingly difficult time caring about the tragic ennui of these unremarkable characters and their pithy white people problems. For a show that takes itself this seriously, one hopes for a greater sense of urgency--higher stakes, even. Season three is no different. Perhaps I'm too demanding in where I want to direct my empathy, but these stories are only affecting if a person has never experienced legitimate trauma.

While the series isn't broaching new territory in its exploration of intimacy, suburb acting and occasionally poignancy will compel viewers to spend time with these saddies. [26 May 2017, p.54]

We Got This Covered
After an appealing, if tonally uneven, first season and its quietly powerful second season, Casual season 3 channels the best of both seasons and promises to become its strongest and most invigorating outing to date.

Contrail
The second season ended on a high note with an episode that could have worked as a series finale if need be. But something went wrong in Season 3. What initially was a nice half hour of discerning comedy it's now just utterly annoying boredom. There's no story to tell here anymore. The comedy is gone too. The writers don't know what to do with these characters who are becoming more and more insufferable with each episode where nothing happens. It's actually sad to see these valid actors just hanging in there. At one point one episode felt like an extended commercial for well known giant corporations with their brand name being constantly repeated ad nauseam. It's quite difficult to relate to perpetuated idleness and self-pity even if that's how you live your life. Let alone for anyone else.
