A compelling, surprise-filled show about the devaluation of romance in contemporary life.

Casual may seem like another snarky commentary on modern romance, but its dirty little secret, and the reason it more than sustains itself in a second season (and, Hulu willing, many more to come), is that the main characters quixotically believe they can fix themselves.

Casual remains very funny, but it has also become even more sophisticated in the third season.

The final season of Zander Lehmann’s Hulu series illustrates everything viewers could want from a half-hour hybrid of comedy and drama. It’s ambitious without losing the ongoing narrative thread.

The season as a whole is terrific, and comes very satisfyingly full circle with all of its stories, but you might want to give the first two episodes a try tomorrow and then loop back later to watch the rest in a smaller window.

Casual still stands out among this group [of lo-fi dramas] because the writing and performances are so specific and so smart that it doesn't feel like a spin-off of six other shows.

For those of you sporting an anything-but-casual obsession with Hulu’s delightful and insightful comedy series, let me tell you this about Season 3: It only gets better.

Season two proves emphatically (having seen six of the 10) that the first was no fluke.

Casual leans a little too easily into some familiar elements. Still, the psychological through-lines hold up, allowing the series a bit of leeway while sifting through territory a bit beneath its overall ambition.
