Uncle Phil continues to be one of the most unexpected and well-crafted innovations of this reboot. ... In an excellent arc, [Will and Carlton] have different responses to a protest calling out the termination of one of the school's few Black teachers.

The reboot is a good antidote to a show like Euphoria that demands viewers piece together a lot of scattered images, dialogue and ideas to find a cohesive story. But Cooper and the show’s team of writers and directors are competent enough that we can simply enjoy ourselves.

I feel like everyone is expecting way too much “original Fresh Prince,” but that’s just not what they are going for here. Reviews labeling this “reboot/remake” have it all wrong. It takes the basic premise of “Will gets in fight, mom moves him to Bel-Air,” along with the basic characters from the original, but that‘a it. They are their own entity, that exists separately from the original sitcom. From Hilary being much smarter in this series, to Carlton actively doing drugs, the show does indeed change the characters, because it is it’s own show. They story they have told in the first three episodes is pretty great, and I find myself excited to watch the next episode. The overarching story of the dealer back in West Philly still after Will is a good addition to the snow, and you definitely feel for his friend “Tray” (sadly no longer portrayed by Don Cheadle) who he has to leave behind when he leaves for L.A. Jabari Banks is an excellent Will, and is a clear standout among the wonderful cast. Looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here!

In its 2022 iteration, Bel-Air capitalizes on the two things dominating television today: nitty-gritty realism, and nostalgia.

The best thing about it is Jabari Banks, who brings his own charisma to the Will Smith role. He is required to turn in a "deeper" performance. Also good are the action scenes the basketball games and gang scenes but whether that will be enough for former fans to watch a whole, morally earnest series spinning off a 30-yearold sitcom we'll see.

About as fresh as the fourth season of a teen melodrama on The CW, albeit with rougher language. ... Still, it's early days, and whenever Banks pours on Will's charm, one can hope Bel-Air will rediscover some of the original series' sense of fun. [14 - 27 Feb 2022, p.7]

Suck all the joy, exuberance and wondrous charisma out of “The Fresh Prince” — a worthy launchpad for an actor who, in his prime, was widely considered the biggest movie star in the world — and you’re left with the gloomy and plodding “Bel-Air.” ... A suffocating self-seriousness overhangs “Bel-Air.”

Bel-Air strives for authenticity in the most thinly drawn manner possible. ... The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air [had] the exuberant chemistry of a cast that felt like a living, breathing Black American family. Bel-Air lacks such chemistry, curdling the dynamics meant to enliven the series.

Beautiful movie. I love the way it picks up and then takes you home. It helps me to understand that everything is possible

Yeah it really ****, like what the hell did they do to the characters? This completely contradicts the original series.

Absolutely terrible. Low quality, a horrible continuation of the original, just disrespectful to the original series.
