Whether a viewer might be a fan of Wham! or not is ultimately irrelevant, as Chris Smith has produced something as incendiary as any of Wham!’s hits.

Even as there are some moments where it can fall into feeling like a greatest hits recap of the group that dances along the surface of the story, the more complicated reflections it offers on their lives and music cuts quite a bit deeper when it counts.

Wham is a love letter to fans and a great documentary to understand better a band that mark a generation worldwide. It´s great to see George Michael voice again narrating the history of the band. The music is there, and the looks, and the vibe of the 80´s, nothing is missing. The show tries to keep a light tone on some of the problems Michael was experiencing during his time as an artist, it just focuses on the music, the creative process, the concerts, interviews and some of the "Out of the closet" roadblocks the singer experienced. No substance abuse or any blurry comment which serves, in my opinion, as a farewell to the singer and the golden years of pop music.

Flavored with nostalgia for the 80's, it is a tour-de-force to the origins and glory days of one of the most characteristic groups of that decade. The best? The contagious and rhythmic of his songs.

What emerges is the story of an extremely close and profoundly charming boyhood friendship – but one where the junior partner couldn’t, or wouldn’t, put the genie of his extraordinary talent back in the bottle once his pal had coaxed it out of him.

Nothing here’s overthought or pumped up. To invoke the words of a different beacon of catchiness, “Wham!” is a teenage dream. You could drink it from a coconut.

Smith has made a film that’s not unlike Wham!’s hits — bouncy, light and frothy, nothing that demands anything of the viewer and listener other than a smile.

It’s an enjoyable spectacle, and a madeleine for the 1980s: but there was something more to say about friendship, sexuality and the music itself.

Director Chris Smith builds the film around Ridgeley’s mother’s scrapbooks of photographs and memorabilia – and perhaps partly because of that, it ends up feeling like little more than a leaf through the milestones. It’s been made for the fans, but they’ll know every last detail already: it’s pop history as singalong.

I'm not a fan. I never have been but I found it competent enough, although like the Stan Lee documentary I just watched, it's incredibly superficial.
I guess it's more than enough for its target audience.
