It might, in fact, be the best straight-to-DVD action movie ever made. And the fact that there’s any competition for that title should tell you that times have changed.

Connoisseurs of straight-to-video mayhem will revel in the latest chapter of the "Universal Soldier" franchise, which manages to strike that delicate balance between over-the-top ridiculousness and well-crafted filmmaking. [28 Feb 2010, p.Q28]

This movie is far better than Universal Soldier 2. IN fact I would go as far as saying it is just as entertaining than the original. The story has good references to Chernobyl, government/military versus criminal themes, as well as moral, social and political dilemmas that soldiers, politicians and civilians have to face. The fight sequences are varied with the lead actors doing an amazing job. The minor plot twists are good and suspense sequences are shot very well. The only issue that I have is that the dialogue is a bit sloppy in places. But its not yawn-inducing as the second movie.

An indecently entertaining trashfest.

This belated sequel lacks the wit and charm of its predecessor, resulting in a po-faced action flick that has "straight-to-DVD" written all over it.
